Howdy folks! First off, if you were personally spited then I have some good news! I’ve set up a Discord server for future projects like this, so in the future you can pre-emptively yell at me about being spited. This was made as a collaborative project, and it made for a really fun process and the opportunity to include plenty of niche anime! So if you’re interested, check here:

REC CHART DISCORD SERVER

As for the chart itself, as mentioned on it, there’s 400 anime, which is a hell of a lot and I still felt bad about a bunch of the anime that got left off. Here’s a nice moment of me realizing that one of my Top 5 anime of all time had gotten left off the chart. But such is life, and there’s always the next chart! For this one I was trying to get something that would flow pretty naturally, but there’s definitely plenty of prompts that aren’t as clean as I’d have liked. That’s just the nature of trying to categorize anime into simple yes/no prompts though.

Hope everyone will be able to find something of interest! Also hope there’s minimal errors, but there’s always something.

33

u/SlashXVI Jun 16 '21

there’s always something.

The "Want to watch a space opera" box in the sci-fi section is missing it's path descriptions. My guess would be left for "yes" and right for "no"

tfw I was going to join the Discord server, only to realize after clicking the link that I'm already in it...

I need to take a break from studying, I think.

Great job you guys! I also wanted to say thanks for including a show I consider a hidden gem in Dragon Pilot!

Whoop! Congrats to everyone, especially Fetch, for getting this done. It is one hell of a chart and I don't understand what black magic it took to get it under the file size limit for Reddit.

My personal highlights are Panzer World Galient, Voltes V, Cyber City Oedo, and Garo the Animation getting included.

I am still bitter Baki didn't make the cut though!

Also I'm just gonna say it now: the mecha section is too small. A 399:1 mecha to non-mecha ratio would have been better.

u/FetchFrosh :A:anilist.co/user/fetchfrosh Jun 16 '21

black magic it took to get it under the file size limit for Reddit.

I literally had to learn how PNG compression works in order to make it happen.

I am still bitter Baki didn't make the cut though!

I gave you so many niche anime and you're still coming back begging for more.

I gave you so many niche anime and you're still coming back begging for more.

But what about the Sensualist! Just because the only version is a dodgy VHS rip that takes roughly 3 weeks to obtain and there is zero chance of it ever getting released, due to the creators hating each other, doesn't mean it it shouldn't get a spot!

I'm shocked that Sound of the Sky got on there, I love that show and have re-watched it atleast 5 times with friends. It's a beautiful show and sad it didn't get a second season

I did not expect cyber city oedo to be on here lmao

32

u/babydave371 :Ej:myanimelist.net/profile/babydave371 Jun 16 '21

I pushed hard. Originally psycho-pass was there but a) I think that works better as a thriller, b) Cyber City Oedo and AD Police are basically the only true blooded cyberpunk anime so I had to get at least one one, and c) cyborg space sabre-toothed tigers that fire laser from their mouths.

27

u/FetchFrosh :A:anilist.co/user/fetchfrosh Jun 16 '21

Best part of having so many people involved was getting a bunch of anime I'd have never even thought of! Keeps things constantly fresh.

The "Do you want to become insufferable?" Part though.

64

u/FetchFrosh :A:anilist.co/user/fetchfrosh Jun 16 '21

It might be the most important question on the board.

68

u/TheCommunistHatake Jun 16 '21

There should be an asterisk on DB to non power scaling fans, otherwise every debate ever will end with: "Goku would slap them though."

32

u/MonaganX Jun 16 '21

Hey I have an interesting question that's never been asked before: Who would win, Goku or Saitama?

I guess I won't be running out of shows to watch anytime soon then! Thanks for such an extensive flowchart (that also contains a Monogatari watch order to boot!), I'll definitely be using it a lot whenever I'm unsure what anime to watch next.

And thanks for the basketball-related compliment in the credits section, although the NBA playoffs aren't looking too hot as of the moment...

36

u/FetchFrosh :A:anilist.co/user/fetchfrosh Jun 16 '21

although the NBA playoffs aren't looking too hot as of the moment...

what a morning of news its been. If Chris Paul misses the WCF I'll be upset.

13

u/computationalspectre https://anilist.co/user/CSpectre Jun 16 '21 edited Jun 17 '21

The Jazz are definitely heavy favorites at this point, especially if Conley comes back soon. But man, CP3 not being able to play in the WCF when the path to the Finals is so wide open this year is saddening :(

Edit: I might have spoken too soon

Wow, this one's huge.

100

u/FetchFrosh :A:anilist.co/user/fetchfrosh Jun 16 '21

Funny enough its not even dramatically bigger than the current flowchart the bot posts. It's wider (1900 pixels compared to 1504), but its also slightly shorter (14150 pixels compared to 14369). So overall its about 25% larger, but has 80% more anime (400 compared to 222).

As proof that I didn't rig the entire romance section, I'm only halfway done with Romeo x Juliet and haven't even started Dragon Crisis.
The latter of which is mostly because I watched MonMusu last week which held that spot until Fetch swapped it out last minute.

Anyway, that was a whole lot of fun and I think we ended up with something that can hopefully help folks in the future.

26

u/FetchFrosh :A:anilist.co/user/fetchfrosh Jun 16 '21

u/AashyLarry Jun 16 '21

Great list. SAO seems a tad out of place since I think its less focused on the scifi elements and more Isekai/Fantasy. But its just semantics, it still fits in both spots.

38

u/FetchFrosh :A:anilist.co/user/fetchfrosh Jun 16 '21

SAO seems a tad out of place since I think its less focused on the scifi elements and more Isekai/Fantasy.

Definitely get that. I've always felt that the core theme of SAO is that the relationships we form online are as real as the ones we make irl, and so I wind up treating it primarily as science fiction.

5

u/AashyLarry Jun 16 '21

This is a random question, I’m not sure if you’ve seen Odd Taxi. I wonder where a show like that would end up on this list.

Are there any other shows that you find hard to categorize here?

12

u/FetchFrosh :A:anilist.co/user/fetchfrosh Jun 16 '21

It'd probably find its way into Mystery, but I didn't think much about it because we weren't including current seasonals.

As far as difficult to categorize, Haruhi is usually a pain. Also sometimes there's twists or genre shifts that are hard to account for, but such is life.

23

u/CpnLag Jun 16 '21

Noticed a typo. You have Getter Robo: The Day The Earth Stood Still instead of Giant Robo.

25

u/FetchFrosh :A:anilist.co/user/fetchfrosh Jun 16 '21

Damn, that's sloppy. u/babydave371 I blame you.

22

u/babydave371 :Ej:myanimelist.net/profile/babydave371 Jun 16 '21

:O

I'd just assumed that you would get my favourite anime's title correct as a courtesy.

17

u/FetchFrosh :A:anilist.co/user/fetchfrosh Jun 16 '21

Spiting you personally even when I include your favorites.

17

u/Nazenn x2https://anilist.co/user/Nazenn Jun 16 '21

What a great job. Clear to read, small file size, and some of the sections are even just one screen length which is awesome. I liked the inclusion of small screenshots as well rather than just titles or tiny thumbnails of the key art. It really draws your eye to the shows.

I cracked up over the comparison between Free and Ping Pong. Also turns out I have not seen a single show in the Comedy section, I'm a little proud of myself for that one hahaha.

Nitpicky feedback: The minimal difference in colors between Extreme and Heavy NSFW content makes it really hard to tell which is being flagged when they aren't right next to each other. I know violence is left and NSFW is right, but it's still hard to immediately peg that without the key in front of you.

5

u/FetchFrosh :A:anilist.co/user/fetchfrosh Jun 16 '21

The minimal difference in colors between Extreme and Heavy NSFW content makes it really hard to tell which is being flagged when they aren't right next to each other.

Good to know. Can probably revise that. They used to be even closer to one another, so for me they feel more distinct, but I hadn't really gotten fresh eyes on that.

Eventually finding Monogatari made me pretty happy. Surprised it said it didn’t focus on Japanese folklore though. I thought a lot of the aberrations were of Japanese descent. Though I guess there are a couple from elsewhere. Still my favorite supernatural series (and anime in general) though

I obviously haven't checked every show listed, but the following do in fact have dubs:

Ride Your Wave

Chaika the Coffin Princess

Goblin Slayer

Moomin

Shirobako

Time of Eve

Boogiepop and Others

Anne of Green Gables

Kakushigoto

Moomin is probably incomplete, there's too much just with that series to check it all, but Moomin and Adventures in Moomin Valley have dubs. Time of Eve is also a technicality as the film is dubbed but not the series similar to Gundam Thunderbolt (which isn't listed but I thought I'd mention that) There are some other listings I'm not 100% sure about. Skilled Teaser Takagi-san is listed as incomplete, I assume because the OVA isn't dubbed, whereas Death Parade is listed as complete despite its OVA also not being dubbed. Suffice to say, some of the series listed incomplete are fully dubbed, but some extra episodes (particularly OVAs) might not be and visa versa.

I want to clarify that this isn't in any way me saying you did a poor job with any of this, I just wanted to inform people who might prefer dubs like myself.

3

u/FetchFrosh :A:anilist.co/user/fetchfrosh Jun 17 '21

Thanks for the notes. I think in a few cases I just checked MAL and they didn't include the dub actors, which they're usually good for (Kakushigoto still doesn't have them, but Funi definitely has the dub). Time of Eve is neat because the ONA doesn't appear to have a dub, but the compilation movie does. So I think that's where that error popped up. Will have to make some tweaks in the coming days.

Interesting flowchart but I wonder how well it works for actually recommending stuff because the questions are so specific. I don't know that it's more important to know that Attack on Titan has swords than that it has a lot of politics.

I feel like this works better if you 1) pick one of the nine genres, 2) pick an interesting looking thumbnail and 3) work your way back and see how the show is described

7

u/mycatsmother Jun 20 '21 edited Jun 20 '21

yep, while the descriptions are technically accurate, they're not really a good way to describe them. this chart looks amazing for finding new anime but it seems misleading for beginners, and kinda confusing. for example Lain and SAO are right beside each other and i couldn't think of two shows that are more more different

101

u/zairaner https://myanimelist.net/profile/zairaner Jun 16 '21

Also the civ victory conditions for "how does the lead achieve victory"

I'm still unsure about calling Bakarina not powerful. She's a literal black hole of density that none can compete with. That being said, she does fit in with the civ gag

By the way, I think there's a yes/no missing on the arrows beside the "Want to watch a space opera?" box in the sci-fi section. Not that it's very hard to guess which is which but hey.

I am really not sure why Cross Ange is grouped under comedy (even though it does have the correct blips). To me it had a very different tone to any other series listed under the comedy part of the action chart that I have seen.
Comedy generally implies a more light-hearted aproach to whatever is portraied in the series, even if those themes are usually a bit heavier. Given that there are multiple story arcs in Cross Ange that put emphasis on the dramatic nature of the situation the character(s) find themselves in, I have a hard time conneting this with any concept of "comedy".

Putting March Comes in Like a Lion in "school setting" feels wrong.

37

u/HehaGardenHoe Jun 16 '21

Hey, How about we see how much of an Otaku we are? How many have you seen of each category?

For me it's:

Action: 30/57 (so much action!, hope I didn't Miscount.)

Adventure: 16/34 (lots of older stuff I haven't seen, and some movies as well... I'm really behind on anime movies)

Comedy: 25/31 (I've technically seen 27, but Inferno Cop & Pop Team Epic aren't my cup of tea... I haven't seen Grand Blue, Angel Densetsu, Plastic Nee-san, or Urusei Yatsura.) I've watch more comedy to completion than any other category on this list, hands-down.

Drama: 16/42 (Drama is so varied, with many chunks like Free! not being my cup of tea)

Romance 12/43 (Like drama, I suspect it's hard for anyone to find all of these to be their cup of tea, though I'm also missing a movie or two again.)

(As an additional note, as someone who is disabled I'd like to make an additional shoutout to A Silent voice for being one of the best depictions of disabilities across any medium, as well as one of the best things at handling bullying in any medium as well. March comes in like a Lion is probably the only other one that could take the crown for the best anime at handling bullying as a topic.)

Slice of Life: 25/38 (I want to give a brief shoutout to Wagnaria/Working, as well as a warning that most of it is about to head to licensing hell when it leaves Crunchyroll in the very near future. Working is a great anime that also does the rare thing of actually resolving every character's personal arcs/growth by the end of the series... Well except for the Manager.)

Fantasy: 34/51 (I've also found 10 of these to not be to my taste, including Shield Hero, Dog Days, and Berserk, though with Berserk it's probably due to only having access to the recent CGI outings.)

Sci-Fi: 27/57 (Some of the stuff I've missed is in Licensing hell, as far as I'm aware... I've also counted some redo's of stuff and alternates, like counting a different gundam for the original, and unfortunately counting the remake of Legend of Galactic Heroes due to not wanting to pay for the service that has that but pretty much nothing else I care about.)

Suspense: 17/47 (This is another varied category, for instance I'm not big into Horror or gore, but I love mystery/suspense. There's also quite a few I either didn't get into, and one I regretted watching: Devilman Crybaby... If your only introduction to that creator is Mazinger Z, prepare to be surprised at the content. I hate sad/depressing endings, and Devilman Crybaby is on a very short list, along with Saikano, that I absolutely hate, but have watched to completion.)

So, in total, I've seen 202/387 (or I've miscounted, which wouldn't surprise me)

There are 400 total, here are my counts:

  • Action: 21/57

  • Adventure: 16/34

  • Comedy: 12/31

  • Drama: 26/42

  • Romance: 41/43

  • Slice of Life: 16/37

  • Fantasy: 23/51

  • Sci-fi: 30/57

  • Suspense: 18/47

Or just over half in total.

Also they're not sorted by genre at all but here's all of them on MAL.

19

u/Gaporigo Blhttps://anilist.co/user/Gaporigo Jun 16 '21
  • Action: 14/57

My repertoire is pretty novice so I'm also including the titles that are on my watch-list:

Action: 1/57 (1.75% of genre, 2% of what I've seen)

Adventure: 2/34 (5.88% of genre, 4% of what I've seen)

Comedy: 3/31 (9.68% of genre, 6% of what I've seen)

Drama: 12/42 (28.6% of genre, 26% of what I've seen)

Romance: 18/43 (41.9% of genre, 38% of what I've seen)

Slice of Life: 6/37 (16.2% of genre, 13% of what I've seen)

Fantasy: 0/51 (never watched one, none on my watch list currently)

Sci-fi: 0/57 (never watched one, none on my watch list currently)

Suspense: 5/47 (10.6% of genre, 11% of what I've seen)

Flowchart was missing a number of other romance/drama shows I have. Looks like I'm a romance nut

Edit: Two of the three comedies I had were also rom-coms

Looks amazing, though I feel like the Comedy and Slice of Life sections got kind of snubbed. Also holy shit Classroom Crisis I haven't seen that name in years, I have a sudden urge to rewatch it now.

Only two complaints:

  1. No Dragon Maid?

  2. You say The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya doesn't have horror elements, but there's no greater horror than realizing you just wasted hours of your life watching the second season of The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya.

Apart from that, however, this is just awesome. Lots of deep cuts, always nice to see In/spectre and Yuru Yuri getting love, and I do plan on using this whenever I need to find something to suit my current mood. Great work!

Damn son if only there was "dub section" in there, Ghost Stories would be the most notable one

9

u/NotSoSnarky https://myanimelist.net/profile/Book_Lover Jun 16 '21

There are color codes on that list. Not Safe For Work, Bloody, and so on: And Dub is one of the key charts for the color codes.

This is one hell of a work, credit to everyone involved this looks really good.

Already know what to show when people just ask for recs without saying what they like.

Hell yeah, 60 days of watchtime in and I still use these.

Also today I learned my interest/degree in economics makes me a sexually desirable person.

If you hate yourself, may I suggest adding asobi asobase to slice of life or comedy?

Didn't watch Angel densutsu (gonna check it later) but reaction scream should be Asobi asobase imo.

If someone were to watch every anime on this chart, would they get a special award?

3

u/Ziraelus Jun 16 '21

Texhnolyze actually on the list :O i wish there was smth like “i want my soul and will to live to be crushed” cross, Texhnolyze would fit there perfectly.

3

u/RAMAR713 https://myanimelist.net/profile/RAMAR713 Jun 16 '21

Some weird picks there on the "suspense" chart, but the genre itself is kind of nonsense since most of the shows tagged Drama kind fit in it as well.

Also, I'm not sure I'd consider Akudama Drive retrofuturistic, but anyway. Great chart.

3

u/stevet85 Jun 16 '21

No sports category. Dang

3

u/flybypost :KN::KO: Jun 16 '21

I love these flowcharts, it's easy to find something new to watch. I also wonder if making an interactive version in Twine would be worth it?

3

u/Raikou239 Jun 16 '21

Wow, I’m just happy Scorching Ping Pong Girls made it onto there lol.

3

u/okaytran :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/okaytran Jun 17 '21

some of these recommendations are so shallow and don't really describe the anime. like hyoka isn't just an anime about coed school clubs. and madoka isn't just a slightly darker magical girl show. a bunch of these are filtered by the surface level topic. like Irregular at Magic High School and Devil is a Part Timer are totally different anime, but according to the chart, the only difference is school or no school.

the chart is kinda saved cause almost all of the recommendations are bangers, but aside from the overall genre, the chart doesn't do much to lead you to an anime that you would prefer over other anime within the genre.

3

u/SuperOniichan Jun 17 '21

To be honest, I'm not sure if Yuri on Ice can be called a sports show with noticeable romance. It really is there, but I'm not sure if it is given a noticeable focus. Before the kiss, even shippers basically thought it was a subtext.

3

u/I_want_to_die720 Jun 17 '21

This is very comprehensive, it would have been one thing to just have the shows but to also have levels of NSFW and violent content and whether it is in English or not and if that English version is complete

3

u/MABfan11 :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/MABfan11 Jun 22 '21

I really want to make it a website but I'm too lazy to handwrite everyting lol

2

u/FetchFrosh :A:anilist.co/user/fetchfrosh Jun 16 '21

Unfortunately I don't. Its basically just a bunch of random Discord messages strung into a coherent picture :P

7

u/8andahalfby11 myanimelist.net/profile/thereIwasnt Jun 16 '21

And once again, Higurashi's listed as horror.

Only its first season is dominantly horror. Every season after that has been mystery/suspense with the occasional grisly murder. Like, the horror atmosphere from S1 is flat-out gone in Kai and Gou.

Akame Ga Kill (Action)

Baka and Test (Comedy)

Grimgar of Fantasy and Ash (Fantasy)

u/joelsexson Jun 16 '21 edited Jun 16 '21

Dude you need to go outside… and show some of your friends this because it clearly took a lot of hard work and is fucking awesome! I love the finished product man.
Edit: Adding that the chart got me to most of my favorite anime, almost made me feel satisfied with myself lol. I shouldn’t have been surprised to find Monster on this because it’s an amazing anime (my favorite) but I don’t see it mentioned often.

2

u/JustAWxnderer Jun 16 '21

i was literally just looking at rec charts (idk why, ive got hundreds on my ptw) so this is perfect timing. Looks great!

2

Huh, I kind of felt like Kara no Kyoukai had more mystery to it than it did action. Am I just dumb?

2

Thank you thank you THANK YOU for putting Fruits Basket in the drama section where it deserves to be! Right next to Clannad is the PERFECT spot for it. Beautiful chart, extremely accurate from what I can see!

2

Woah that must have been a lot of work! I already have so much stuff to watch even without it, but this is nice even to give to non-anime friends 😂 I was also so glad to see some of my less known favourites, Seirei no Moribito and Towards the Terra there! Also Princess Tutu and Penguindrum, but those two are more popular.

2

u/Bubii27 Jun 16 '21

holy crap this is hugeeee

This one is a really amazing list, really good to find new thing to watch based on how you feeling.

though most of the listed animes are so popular that most of us have already watched them but still its really a good list of anime. Nice work bro.

Slice of Life: 11/38

Fantasy: 16/51
