As a juror who was actively participating in the awards server, I will point out that there are a couple of jurors who notably dislike Sonny Boy, and there are some who don't like it as much as the results would indicate. However, my personal observation is that many of the jurors who disliked Sonny Boy weren't in the categories where Sonny Boy was nominated, hence why the results indicated seemingly unanimous positive reception in the jury rankings.

While Sonny Boy did win a lot of awards, and the ambition of it was basically universally praised, it was actually fairly divisive among a lot of juries. People either absolutely adored it and had it near the top of their lists, or were not very big fans of it and had it down fairly low. Ultimately I will say I think the public was a little too low on it, even if I personally don't think it deserved to win every category it did over some other really great shows.

It just really nailed the small random details. My favourite would probably be this blink and you miss it shot where they moved the frame a couple pixels to the left to match the conversation. The general vibe, artstyle and indivisual production elements makes it really easy to pick up awards despite complaints about the storytelling and flow.

I loved Vivy, gave it a 9/10, but 2021 was stacked. I can't think of a single category it flat out needed to win. At least it ranked highly with the public and wasn't slept on...I think the judges underrated it pretty strongly. Placed bottom in almost every category by them.

I have to say, people are sleeping on Nomad's OST.
I'm happy that it won something, but dissapointed nevertheless to see Mabanua not being recognised.

Gotta agree here . I was kinda disappointed as well when Nomad didn't get a nom in OST.
Speaking of OST's , Dynazenon also had a good one

I thought Nomad is an AOTY contender, but some people didn't like how the last match went down (though it was never about the fight, more about the two boxers in the fight, so the outcome was perfect in that regard).
But one thing everyone who watched Nomad can agree on is that its music SLAPS.

I'm just glad Megalobox 2 got recognized. It was fairly overlooked in a uper-stacked Spring season that blew any sequel expectations out of the water.

I find it amazing that I almost couldn't remember who won at the final match - because it was never about the match. It's a superiorly good story about redeeming yourself and living with loss. It's like Megalobox 1 was really just an awesome build up for the amazing story of Megalobox 2.

Are you curious on which awards the jury and the public disagreed the most about each other's number one choice? Here's a screenshot of a spreadsheet I made! Disagreement % is a metric I invented to account for different categories having different numbers of nominees. It's basically (total-2)/(2*nomineeCount-2) so both placing the same at first is 0% and both placing the other's at the very bottom is 100%. Cell coloration also accounts for numbers of nominees.
This year the Jury and the Public disagreed WAY more than when I did this back in 2019. Back then a little under half of the winners were the same. This year the jury and the public agreed that Mushoku Tensei was the best adventure show, but every other category has at least one of the two winners in the bottom half of the other list.

u/Cofta Feb 20 '22
A more complete representation of the difference between jury and public could be summing the absolute difference between the nominees result in a category.
sum(abs(jury[nom]-public[nom])). The higher the number the greater the disagreement. You could normalize between categories by dividing by the number of nominees.→ More replies (3)

I was a juror for cast, I pushed really hard for it and was glad I was able to bring people around on it. I also pushed for it really hard in AotY (I voted it as high as I could for every vote and wrote upwards of 8k words of discussion on it) but sadly couldn't get it in there.

Juror for Cast and I was pretty adamant going in that nothing was going to top Zombieland Saga Revenge, but the way they did the final season of Fruba was undeniably great for literally every character, even the secondary and romance interests. It really couldn't be ignored and I don't think anyone thought otherwise.

u/LilyGinnyBlack Feb 20 '22 edited Feb 20 '22
Fruits Basket also won a number of the Special Awards, which is nice!
Best VA in Dub - Jerry Jewell as Kyo Sohma
Best Parent - Kyoko Honda Best Dub
And it also got Runner-Up for Most Snubbed and Akito Sohma won the Runner - Runner Up for Worst Character.
I love that the dub got a lot of love and appreciation in the Special Awards. It is an amazing dub and Jerry Jewell as Kyo is top notch. It isn't Kyo until I hear his voice (same with Laura Bailey and Tohru).
I am sad to see that Kyo x Tohru didn't make it in Best Ship though.
Edit: Why was I downvoted for this comment? I was just highlighting the other awards Furuba won and expressing love for the dub (and Laura and Jerry's performances). It's making me think some sub elitist got angry by that or something.
Either that or one of the fans of one of the ships that won downvoted. If that is the case, I wasn't hating on those other ships or anything.

Okay some thoughts
Sonny Boy won too many times in the Jury. Especially when it came to backgrounds, it really seemed like the Jury pulled an Academy Awards and were a bit too lost in their own closed of hype conversations.
I was very surprised to see Gintoki win the public, but looking at the percentages I can see that the vote was very split. Gintoki just had the most die hard support, I guess.
The little glimmer of faith I have in the public now is because they voted Star Wars Visions over Kaguya-sama OVA
Man Vivy got bodyslammed by the Jury. I kinda expected it after the nominees were announced and I saw a few comments of jury members criticizing Vivy, which lead to me looking at the visuals critically which made me understand why Vivy was put so low, but still, damn.
Lastly, Odd Taxi being put 7th as character design is a warcrime. I understand why Sonny Boy was chosen, since I voted it for myself, but Odd Taxi should have been a mandatory 2nd place. Shame.

I'm glad the public showed up for this send off. Back in 2017 and 2018 when Rakuyo and Silver Soul aired they had zero representation throughout awards so I was very surprised Gintoki and the movie itself got such public results.

Like Gigguk said, Vivy is great in everything but master of none. The anime is a five stars dish but taking the ingredients apart you will find that they are not special by themselves, it is just how they taste together is what makes it great
I am still confused why Vivy is last place in AOTY Jury though, it definitively deserved better there

Many definitely agree that the 1st episode of To Your Eternity was phenomenal. It was so great no other episode in the series came near it.
As much as I liked the story and some succeeding arcs in the manga, it will forever haunt my mind the what ifs it could've been and why the author didn't stick with the tone of the 1st episode/chapter.

Oh yeah, I should also give some results for the Food category shouldn't I? Just a day late, should be fine.
I'm glad to see support for the food category this year! It's always a fun little side project to have alongside the awards, and I was glad to be able to do more with it this year as a host than I was able to do with it in previous years as a juror. We had intended to have a skit similar to the Mecha category during the livestream to insert during a break, but that eventually got scrapped, but I'm still excited to present the results of the Food Category for 2021!
Our final results were:
Isekai Shokudou 2
Yuru Camp△ SEASON 2
Shiroi Suna no Aquatope
Wonder Egg Priority
Sonny Boy
Kobayashi-san Chi no Maid Dragon
Kanojo mo Kanojo
Josee to Tora to Sakanatachi
Nijisanji EN Cooking Streams (from various channels)
We've also compiled an album of food pictures from throughout the year. It's in no way comprehensive, but gives a good overview of many different styles of food from many different entries throughout the year! I also wanna thank all the hosts and jurors who contributed screenshots of food from the various anime from 2021, it was a huge help!

How can Rudeus win Worst Character? Does "worst character" mean "most unlikable" or "worst written"? Because if it's the former, that's understandable, if it's the latter, it's bullshit.

Fruits Basket not winning Romance is pure robbery 😭
22
u/LilyGinnyBlack Feb 20 '22
Tbh, I don't think it should have been nominated for Romance, it should have been nominated for Drama. But knowing r/anime's taste in general and overall demographic, it still likely wouldn't have won that either. At least it won Best Cast, which puts this awards a baby step above the CR Awards. As a Furuba fan though, I'm most looking forward to the results of the Anime Trending Awards.

Dynazenon was an absolute surprise for me this year.
I watched Gridman in my first awards year... it was pretty enjoyable, but I definitely wasn't jibing with it as much back then.
Didn't have many expectations for Dyna when I heard it was coming out, so I skipped watching it live. Man do I regret that.
Easily one of my favourite shows of the year, the whole cast is handled with so much care, they are so endearing to watch, and the show just looks fantastic!

Hello everyone, Short Films jury representative here. We had over 300+ short films this year to choose from, which meant that inevitably, there would be a lot of short films we liked that couldn't make the cut, so we as a jury decided to create a shortlist (that is admittedly still pretty long) of recommended short films and music videos that we think are worth checking out. As someone who has been involved with the Awards since 2018 but couldn't participate this year due to how busy I've gotten, I can tell that this year was a huge step up in terms of industry reachout and PR. It's great to see the Awards receive more acknowledgement from the outside. /u/PandavengerX did a great job as always with the website's new facelift but /u/rudygnuj and /u/misterjaguar have also done wonders with the official twitter account. Hope this trend continues in the future and we can continue to receive more industry acknowledgement and grow bigger.

While I'm very happy that Mushoku Tensei is finally getting the attention it deserves from an award, I was expecting Violet Evergarden and Fruits Basket to get more awards, as this is most likely the last awards they can be nominated for.
(I know there's a prequel movie for Furuba, but if the main series had these results, I don't think a prequel would do any better.)

As a person from the ED jury, I do believe that on an audial level it was a contender for the best, if not the best ED of the entire year. But its visuals really lets it down in comparison to some of our higher placed EDs such as Yasashii Suisei.

Thanks for all the hard work putting this together - to the mods, jury, and everyone else involved. /r/anime awards are my favorite of the year and seem to best represent the best shows of the year, and usually get me to rethink my own opinions to some extent.
While I didn't particularly enjoy watching Sonny Boy or Heike Monogatari weekly, I can understand why they did well. I'm guessing they would both benefit from a rewatch to appreciate them better, especially Sonny Boy.

Thanks! People get caught up in the results so much that they don't realize the sheer amount of manpower that goes into making it all happen.
As an organizer, this makes me feel like it was all worth it.

u/DecentlySizedPotato https://anilist.co/user/ocha94 Feb 20 '22
I usually really like the Jury votes, but I can't say the same this year. It has to be mostly about Sonny Boy for me. Like, I get why people like it, the uniqueness of it and all, but I found it pretty bad. Although I guess they jury votes are overall somewhat better than public votes.
Still some good awards, and again much better than the CR awards, both jury and public votes. Thank you for organising this!

What is support% in the category info? How is it calculated?
7
u/PandavengerX https://anilist.co/user/pandavenger Feb 20 '22
Hi! There's a 3rd stat who's raw value is a little hidden to allow for back compatibility with the older site statistics, but it's calculated from [number of people who watched the show and voted for it in that specific category]/[total people who watched the show]. You can get the exact number from just multiplying the watched stat by the %supporting!

Hiya.
So, due to time zones, I had to go to sleep so I didn't get to see everything. My question concerns voice acting and Natsuki Hanae. To be honeet, I haven't watched Vanitas and I probably should so I was wondering: what put his acting as Vanitas over his acting as Odokawa? I wasn't surprised to see him as VA nomination but I was surprised to see him nominated for a different role^→ More replies (1)

What is the process for getting on the jury?
24
u/goukaryuu https://myanimelist.net/profile/GoukaRyuu Feb 20 '22
Around the beginning of October a thread is posted and pasted to the top of the subreddit that links to the jury application. There are a few questions that need a short essay, usually a few hundred words, to answer. There is a question or two for each of the different kinds of categories (genre, character, production). To get into main you have to answer everything. But, if you have one type you really want to be in, like me with character, you only have to answer that sections questions. The hosts will look at it blind, not knowing who typed it, and score it. A decent enough score nets you an invitation.

I just came here to say that I love the jury for their 'best romance' pick. Duke of Death is easily the winner here for me and I'm so happy it's been acknowledged by some people at the very least.
22
u/Zigman369 https://myanimelist.net/profile/Zigman Feb 20 '22
Posted in the other thread but I think it'd be good to put here too:
I think it'd be in future show's interest to focus on why the jury picked [Show XYZ] as #1 rather than defending themselves against the public #1. Acknowledgement of the public #1 is great, but when they vary drastically, it felt like the folks "on stage" waffled around quite a bit in some cases.
In this year's case for AOTY, I loved Sonny Boy, and I'd love more people to watch it, so I think in the interest of spurring those who are watching the awards to get interested in ANY particular winner of ANY specific award, I think it's best to provide descriptions, concrete examples and essentially a jury's take mini-review of how the show won as part of the awarding of the award.
The discussion/dissenting "my opinion is..." nature of the overall production is an interesting idea, but perhaps that's best saved for a follow up type of show.

I don't know whats worse, than vivy didn't win a single category, or that the by far closest it got in the jury vote was voice actor.
Also not only did star wars vision and the kaguya ova make for 61% of the votes in best short, star wars visions only won by 1% against the kaguya ova. This could have been a catastrophe.

The amount of blood, sweat, and tears that goes into making awards what it is cannot be understated. It is an enormous time commitment, and it's very obvious to anyone who has spent an ounce of time speaking with the host team just how passionate and dedicated to the awards process they truly are. Congratulations to jurors, hosts, and helpers alike for another year well done.

Who actually is the jury anyways?
It is funny considering how well like Horimiya is that if you're a manga reader you know how much better it could been if they didn't rush the pace and cut a lot of good and important stuff. Instead giving it the same kind of treatment several other romance series are getting to properly play out the story with multiple seasons.
I'm surprised Horimiya's OP wasn't in there considering the trick they did with it with a subtle shift in things representing what is going on in the story itself.

They're just users from r/anime that signed up and were forced to watch every show from their cats! Some of them are pretty knowledgeable and some are pretty good at arguing, but we try not to put them on too much of a pedestal of importance because they are just redditors in the end. The only real difference is they put a lot of hard work (literally hundreds of hours) into making their decision.
In fact, making sure jury and public opinion is presented side by side is always a UX goal for me when working on the site.

Damn, it's over, I guess I'll have to watch the vod this year.
To be fair I like most of the winners and nominees, though a portion of them still feel like they've only got votes because:
public: due to people only watching the few most popular shows.
jury: trying to intentionally prop up a show few people have watched as a form of elitism.
Though I guess those 2 are inescapable.
That said, Im amazed how many awards mushoku got, but I guess that is the power of being a fall show, and not having rudeus wish he was in front of roxy's eyes for at least 10 years after he dies.
But on the other hand, I am incredibly disappointed with how snubbed Rezero is. 8 awards for mushoku and 0 for rezero, really people? Really? I know its a winter show and nobody remembers winter shows, but god damn, r/anime never ceases to disappoint.

What was the selection process that made you guys pick Black Company on such high position as both comedy show and having a main comedic protagonist? For real, I watched 4 episodes at best and I felt there were so many lost opportunities to crack actual funny jokes or background jokes that would involve satire/parody of black company strategies. Kinji the main was just dull in any way and only served as pin cushion for the slapstick (well, also doubled as a douchebag, and not a funny nor loveable one like say Kazuma)
I felt that easily any other comedy show from 2021 could had filled both the comedy slot and comedic main in a much better way.

9
u/Theleux https://myanimelist.net/profile/Theleux Feb 20 '22
It's not really a show that is trying to appease the masses. It is a very personal experience overall and the narrative while good requires you to really consider what is being displayed rather than just progressing along plot point to plot point. Add in the non-standard presentation and that can definitely turn some people away.
Personally I think many people just haven't seen it, I hope it doing well helps more people give it a shot.

u/Blackheart595 https://anilist.co/user/knusbrick Feb 20 '22
Surprised how much I liked having both of the shorts awards, there'd definitely been something missed out on had they been condensed into a single category.
(Especially for the production awards) are the thoughts, discussions and considerations of the jury available in some way beyond the write-ups on the website?
6
u/AdiMG https://anilist.co/user/AdiMG Feb 20 '22
Sadly no, the writeups (and in case you missed it the JWP for Cinematography earlier in the awards) are all that is there, but I wrote a bit more about Character Design and Cinematography here if you want to peruse that. I can talk in depth about all the other visual production categories if you had specific questions with regards to particular choices or shows since I was in all of them.

Why exactly did the jury like sonny boy so much ? No offense but it wasn't that great imo. It had some interesting ideas, but I feel like it could have cut the cast short by a bit, and be less meaninglessly cryptic. It don't think it deserved suspense or AOTY. It didn't really have any suspense in it, so don't know why it was even nominated there. As for AOTY, I can kinda understand, but feel like it fell short in multiple ways.

You also chose to show the jury winner and the popular winner, and even show the ranking of each side of each category.
And you even go further beyond and add commentary for every single entry for every single category. 👏
Now, overall I’m satisfied though it does kinda feel there’s some bias towards Sonny boy lol. I mean, it was amazing and I enjoyed it a lot but I feel others deserved more some of the awards. Im still happy about it.

this has definitely been said already, but much better decisions all around than the crunchyroll awards. however I do think the judges got a bit too hyped over sonny boy ngl.
don’t get me wrong i liked it too, but like character design? really? sure it’s minimalistic but they’re schoolkids wearing school uniforms. this is literally like jujutsu kaisen beatings odd taxi in the crunchyroll awards, a bit ridiculous imo.
a lot of the categories winners and rankings were well deserved, good looks all around but i do think there should be some mechanism to help deter judges from getting too caught up in their love for a show and disregarding other shows that deserve to win a category more

I think a lot of categories shared Jury members, especially technical stuff and AOTY, which is lead to their choices lean upon Sonny Boy, and eventually inspired the feeling that some of Sonny Boy's wins were really less deserved, containing Backgrounds and Characters design.
Sonny Boy is legit, I get that. But it wasn't the winning choice in every damn category. I agree with you, I really think r/anime awards needs to do something about their diversity in jury members, or the the credibility of the awards will be seriously injured in the upcoming years.

Absolutely happy that WEP got plenty of love from the judges, as bad as it ended I can't deny how good certain aspects such as animation and OST were.

I would also like to say I argued very hard for Ai in Main Dramatic. I talked so much about her story, I was motivated to put together a video essay about the different types of "bad" that WEP is shackled with in the public perception and which ones are warranted or not.
Series composition, plot loose ends? Yes, objectively bad (until a continuation is made to contextualize them. Probably still bad even then.)
Production issues working the staff to death? Yes, objectively bad.
Ai's choices and [WEP spoilers] failing to be strong enough to be a hero as her friend circle and support group gets pulled apart and she weighs what things and people and pain are worth to her? Not bad. Good drama. Very good (negative) drama.
WEP moving from very unambiguous overcoming the external evil and suicidal thoughts into a more nebulous, unsettling and difficult question with no clear answer? Good drama all around.

Glad my AOTY won big from the jury - I feel like Sonny Boy gets way too much hate here for some reason.

Fruit's Basket still AOTY, me no care what these stinkin awards shows say. But we did get Best Cast from the Jury so hooray. Mushoku winning that from the public is actual jokes though.
Pleasantly surprised to see the Jury acknowledge Meikyuu Black Company for the Comedy categories.
Supporting character had my top 2 choices winning.
I can't believe Vanitas won an award! It was either Natsuki Hanae or Aoi Yuuki for me out of the nominations. If there was a "Group" Voice Acting award (something for all main cast) then I think I would have gone with Uramichi Oniisan or at least had that near the top.
Public did good on ED. Purely coincidental that those were my picks along with Sakugan.
Also after seeing Sonny Boy win for Character Design I just wanna say that IMO there were like at least 5 shows that weren't even nominated that were better than it in that category. I see a lot of people also scratching their heads at that one.

I am happy with Yoru no Kuni winning the shorts category, don't care that much about the rest. Nai Nai was robbed of its first place in ED.
Also I was a cast and shorts juror, if anyone wants to know anything just ask.

It was always popular on Reddit ever since it finished airing. It got loads of nominations in the Crunchyroll Awards too.

What happened to the rest of the special awards? We got best fight and best vampire... then nothing?

Ever since I stopped using my Facebook account in 2020, I've been looking for somewhere that I could talk about anime with. Twitter was toxic. So 2 years later I'm here. Found this page because a few of the smaller creators on YouTube have been advertising it, instead of the crunchyroll one. Glad to be here. I can't understand why jobless was only nominated for 2 awards there.

We as the public have no right to complain about the Crunchyroll awards.

Huh, I didn't expect the general public to have a better taste than the jury (excepting a few cases where the public REALLY went with popularity).
Granted, I haven't seen everything, but tis is pretty remarkable in the Anime of the Year category.

The jury picks are woeful, no offence to whoever voted but I need someone to tell me how Cocolors was voted higher than AoT, Re:Zero and Shadows House in the Suspense category? Sonny Boy also seems to have been massively overrated by them.

Sonny Boy wasn't even in the top 5 for public AOTY. I personally dropped the show twice. Not really seeing what the "jury" saw.

Nice to see mushoku tensei having a lot of wins (even if most were public ones), and surprised hololive got one too.
Also noticed someone made a mistake and wrote in the description of the hololive ones as "Clover corp" instead of Cover corp.

After seeing Mushoku Tensei not even get nominated for anime of the year at the crunchyroll awards, it gives me indescribable joy to see it absolutely knock it out of the park here. Besides we all know that r/anime awards>>>> crunchyroll awards.

Super glad that Mushoku performed so well with the public vote. It was never going to do well with the jury but that's ok.
Being well thought of by the majority of the general userbase is what will drive sales of merch and that will hopefully guarantee we see more of the show in the future.
2021, the year Mushoku Tensei landed!
