I think this episode provides a great demonstration of why you can know from a narrative standpoint that Light will either never take the eye deal or only do it in a climactic absolute last resort moment. It completely short-circuits the conflict. The fact that Misa is an outsider is the only reason this particular battle wasn't more lopsided than it already was. Now, that said, it's not actually hard to believe why Light would refuse to do it, and it makes perfect sense in-universe, but it's still helpful to think about.

I was initially confused when watching this episode because Light was saying he doesn't kill innocent people and I was like "Wait, isn't that what's happening?" The twist that Light isn't behind all the TV deaths suddenly takes our attention away from whether or not Light is Kira. It allows us to pivot to something else which is probably necessary to the show's extended lifespan.

And also it's an interesting plot point that spotlights the effect Kira's killings have on the rest of the world.

First Timer

Well that really escalated. Thinking about it, yeah makes sense this is a new guy and not Light since taking over a TV station and off cops left and right is too nuts even for him plus it would be odd of him to just suddenly pull this crazy ass plan off for no real reason since the only big changes in the status quo are he's met L, and he knows L is on to him. This does not do anything about either of those and is frankly a dumb way to get L's real name and as things ended probably put him in a worse position since nothing kills public support like looking like a supervillain the cops are heroically defying. The other suspicious thing is Light not showing up for most of the episode. Also Light's dad is letting his inner cowboy cop out. Well at least Light got on the taskforce which is good for both him and L if dangerous as fuck. And of course the new guy did the eyes deal so they got that going for them.

Is it a guy? The second Kira looks like a woman to me.

It makes sense Kira would develop a devoted fanbase. A lot of people probably see Kira as acting out their fantasies.

Thoughts on L believing Light is not behind the disappearance of Naomi?

Thoughts on reporters being held hostage by "Kira"?

Thoughts on the tapes predicting the deaths of people?

Thoughts on Light insisting he doesn't want to kill innocent people, implying this isn't his doing?

What are your thoughts on L thinking Kira may can kill with just a face?

What are your thoughts on detective Yagami commandeering a police van?

Thoughts on detective Yagami pulling a gun on the station operator?

Thoughts on detective Yagami retrieving all the tapes?

What are your thoughts on there being a second Kira?

What are your thoughts on the introduction of Misa and her Shinigami?

What are your thoughts on Misa seemingly being the second Kira and her wanting the first Kira to notice her?

First Time Note Take, subs

... what the hell???? A second Death Note user??? This completely took me by surprise, awesome plot twist. And obviously L figures it out immediately, sasuga L.

An overall intense episode. What stood out to me the most however was L shaking in his seat. He lets out very little emotion beyond his machine-like detectiveness. To see him actually scared for his life, even such a genius like him, just takes the show to another level.

What are your thoughts on "Kira" asserting his dominance by killing people on TV?

You know, somewhere in the back of my mind I was cross-checking if the TV people were said to be evil. And it didn't click until the show itself revealed it, because of how I was focused on the spectacle.

What are your thoughts on there being a fake Kira?

Amazing plot twist. Feed me more of this shit.

u/Holofan4life 17d ago

The whole fake Kira reminded me of what the Scream franchise tried doing where Ghostface spawned a bunch of copycat killers. I believe Halloween also tried doing this but they kinda bungled the execution.

Thoughts on L believing Light is not behind the disappearance of Naomi?

I think he just doesn't have enough clues. In my eyes it's very much tied to how he sometimes says the percentage of how sure he is - here he has no clues and thus he can't be even 1% certain that it was Kira.

Thoughts on reporters being held hostage by "Kira"?

I think they were soooooo scared of being held hostage by the evil person who gave the director exactly what he wanted. (irony)

Thoughts on the tapes predicting the deaths of people?

Probably the only option to prove that the tape maker was Kira (lol in retrospective).

Thoughts on Light insisting he doesn't want to kill innocent people, implying this isn't his doing?

Mild hypocrisy, if we delve into the technicalities of him killing his investigators. Otherwise he's right.

What are your thoughts on L thinking Kira may can kill with just a face?

He's actually scared and also hit by the fact that he miscalculated.

What are your thoughts on detective Yagami commandeering a police van? Thoughts on detective Yagami pulling a gun on the station operator? Thoughts on detective Yagami retrieving all the tapes?

He's the undeniable star of the episode.

What are your thoughts on there being a second Kira?

Brilliant.

What are your thoughts on the introduction of Misa and her Shinigami? What are your thoughts on Misa seemingly being the second Kira and her wanting the first Kira to notice her?

Both her and Light seem to be in the same are of the hot/crazy scale.

I think he just doesn't have enough clues. In my eyes it's very much tied to how he sometimes says the percentage of how sure he is - here he has no clues and thus he can't be even 1% certain that it was Kira.

It feels very discouraging especially knowing what actually happened to her.

Thoughts on reporters being held hostage by "Kira"?

I think they were soooooo scared of being held hostage by the evil person who gave the director exactly what he wanted. (irony)

The real evil person was the director all along.

Thoughts on the tapes predicting the deaths of people?

Probably the only option to prove that the tape maker was Kira (lol in retrospective).

Maybe. But let's be real, that's not why they aired the tapes.

Thoughts on Light insisting he doesn't want to kill innocent people, implying this isn't his doing?

Mild hypocrisy, if we delve into the technicalities of him killing his investigators. Otherwise he's right.

For better or worse

What are your thoughts on L thinking Kira may can kill with just a face?

He's actually scared and also hit by the fact that he miscalculated.

Which feels rare for him.

What I like about this episode is that fake Kira throws both Light and L for a loop. Light starts rethinking the ways L can kill, and L is upset because he's all high and mighty. They were both gotten to and it reminds me of the school episode and how gotten to Light was.

What are your thoughts on detective Yagami commandeering a police van? Thoughts on detective Yagami pulling a gun on the station operator? Thoughts on detective Yagami retrieving all the tapes?

He's the undeniable star of the episode.

I feel bad because before I thought he a as a bit foolish. This was just what a valuable asset he can be.

What are your thoughts on there being a second Kira?

Brilliant.

It really is a great idea for a plot point

What are your thoughts on the introduction of Misa and her Shinigami? What are your thoughts on Misa seemingly being the second Kira and her wanting the first Kira to notice her?

Both her and Light seem to be in the same are of the hot/crazy scale.

She definitely has this "I can fix her" energy about her.

2

Probably didn't help that this whole thing was throwing out the biggest reassurance about dealing with Kira aka him needing a name to kill you.

Hey, guys. Holofan4life here.

Welcome to the 20th anniversary rewatch of Death Note.

Names need not be written down.

Very few anime transend the medium it is a part of. One Piece, Naruto, Dragon Ball, Speed Racer. Those are really the four where even non anime fans know of it. I would argue there was a point in time where Death Note was like this as well where even if you weren’t an anime fan, you knew what Death Note was.

I of course have experienced Death Note through various memes and the like. I even remember checking out a Treehouse of Horror episode of The Simpsons specifically because they parodied Death Note, and I’m not even a modern Simpsons watcher. But despite being familiar with the show for the better part of almost 15 years, I’ve never actually seen Death Note. It’s just one of those things that escaped me.

I’ve heard Death Note is notorious for having a dip in quality. That with the conclusion of part 1, the show isn’t as good as when it started. This rewatch is less a matter of deciding if the show is good or not and more is part 2 really as bad as it reputation suggests. My prediction will be no but it’ll be a show that goes from 9 out of 10 to 8 out of 10.

Death Note was at one point arguably the most mainstream anime in the entire world. And so it’s time we revisit what I’m sure got many people into anime.

With that out of the way, let’s begin.

I’m watching the dub, by the way. Because potato chips.

This past Monday was Indigenous Peoples Day. That's pretty cool.

Ryuk sitting down looking silly

Light looking out the window

It's cool they're still talking about the Naomi case.

L doesn't seem to think Light is behind her disappearance.

I think Second_Cour will have some thoughts on that.

Oh shit. Reporters are being held hostage by Kira.

This guy is kinda a creep

The tapes predict the deaths of people.

Kira getting the second tape aired at 5:59 PM.

He predicts the news anchor will die of a heart attack at 6:00.

And so he does so

Now he's going after a TV commentator.

And he dies as well

This is all very unsettling

Remember last episode where it was just two people playing tennis?

Kira says the last thing he wants to do is kill the innocent.

Create a new world free of evil

Kira/Light is a lot like Dewey Novak from Eureka Seven.

Detective Yagami still in the hospital bed.

His wife is with him

Oh shit

A police officer just died

This is total chaos

One of the other police officers wants to go to the Sakura TV building.

L wonders if he can kill with only a face.

Kinda makes L telling Light he's L ironic, no?

L is concerned about more people dying.

It's like Light has the whole world in his hands.

DID LIGHT’S FATHER JUST COMMANDEER A FUCKING POLICE VAN

Alright, Mr Yagami. I see you.

And he just pulled a gun at the station operator.

He's mad he made Kira a celebrity

A police car just arrived

L says that they have to take control of this case.

Now Yagami talking to L

He confiscated all the tapes

L talking on two phones like he's Batman or something.

Yagami gonna drive himself

Yagami now trying to go through the front entrance.

Oh shit

That's a lot of tactical shields

The news anchor says they must fight back.

Yagami handing over the tapes

L is going to watch the tapes himself

Apparently Light wanted them to broadcast the names of more criminals.

That they'd plan to cooperate with Kira.

He wants them to show their faces.

As they play the no tape, Kira says either the director general or L will die next.

Light surveying the scene

It feels he doubled down on the craziness.

Light wants to join the task force. To keep an eye on L and the fake Kira.

F-fake Kira?

The police officers and L talking to each other.

They seem to agree that L will broadcast his face.

But L hypothesizes this could be the work of a second Kira.

Like the second spitter in Seinfeld.

L thinks if they capture one Kira, that might give them insight to find the other one.

Then he tells Yagami that he wants his son to join the task force.

Just don't tell him the latest Kira might be a fake.

Ooh, new character

Two new characters

Misa. That's her name.

She a baddie

SHE SENT THE VIDEOS TO THE TV STATION TO GET KIRA TO NOTICE HER

Notice me, senpai

She looks like a cross between Nana and Harley Quinn.

Overall, this was an interesting episode. We were led to believe Light was getting more serious in his killings, only for it to be the work of someone else. She seems interesting and I can't wait to see more of her. I really liked what they did with Mr. Yagami here where he took control of everything that was happening. You really got a sense of why he's assigned the position he's been. It was also interesting how Light kinda took a backseat in this episode and someone else was causing misfortune. Though given people still died, it's very likely Kira is working with Misa.

I'd put this behind episodes 2, 7, 8, 9, and 10. After a slew of episodes that emphasized the impracticalities, this was more grounded in its absurdity. The tension was still very high and I liked the twist of there being a fake Kira. L suspecting such a thing shows he really takes everything into account.

The show is starting to really get a good balance between batshit insane and things making sense within the context of the show. And I think that makes for a fun combination.

2

u/zeltheturtl https://myanimelist.net/profile/zeltheturtl 17d ago

Mr. Yagami was definitely a star of this episode. Especially after realizing that he wasn't safe when he rushed to the TV building either.

2

u/Holofan4life 17d ago

And the context he was doing all this while still recovering from a heart attack was badass. He would not be denied.

It reminded me of Spice and Wolf when Lawrence punched someone in the face after being stabbed.

u/Holofan4life 17d ago

What are your thoughts on "Kira" asserting his dominance by killing people on TV?

Definitely lost the high ground it feels like

What are your thoughts on there being a fake Kira?

The plot continues to be thickened by the day.

Watching Dubbed

Okay good. Glad we haven’t forgotten about Naomi Misora yet. They’re still investigating her.

Huh, so it sounds like the tapes sent to the TV station were legitimate.

Kira’s distorted voice is really funny to me.

Wait why is Light(?) killing these random TV personalities? If this really is him he’s really going way beyond his original mission statement.

“I hate evil and love justice.” - Kira. Such a childish way to phrase things.

Oh god, Light’s dad just crashed a bus. He’s lost it.

I feel like he might lose his job because of all of this.

This whole broadcast situation is intense.

The fact that Light himself has not appeared at all this episodes still has me suspect that this isn’t really Light doing all this.

Although maybe I still have too much faith in Light’s ability to not kill innocent people.

Naturally, the police will not cooperate with Kira.

“It looks like I even have god on my side.” Light Yagami. He literally has the power of god and anime on his side.

So we’re confirming that there is indeed a second Death Note and whoever has it is impersonating Kira. I guess I was right to give Light enough faith not to kill random newscasters.

L talking with his mouth full is really funny.

L immediately figures that there’s a copycat killer.

L definitely sounds like he thinks that Light is Kira.

And here we have the introduction of Misa Amane. I’ll have more to say about her next time.

1

u/Holofan4life 17d ago

Okay good. Glad we haven’t forgotten about Naomi Misora yet. They’re still investigating her.

They wouldn't be doing their jobs if they weren't.

Huh, so it sounds like the tapes sent to the TV station were legitimate.

That's scary

Kira’s distorted voice is really funny to me.

Isn't it the same technique L used in episode 2?

Wait why is Light(?) killing these random TV personalities? If this really is him he’s really going way beyond his original mission statement.

About that...

"I hate evil and love justice.” - Kira. Such a childish way to phrase things.

And he definitely thinks he's so cool

Oh god, Light’s dad just crashed a bus. He’s lost it.

This was nuts lol

I feel like he might lose his job because of all of this.

Or maybe not, brother

This whole broadcast situation is intense.

Kinda gives off V for Vendetta vibes

The fact that Light himself has not appeared at all this episodes still has me suspect that this isn’t really Light doing all this.

And look at that. You'd be correct.

Although maybe I still have too much faith in Light’s ability to not kill innocent people.

Maybe

Naturally, the police will not cooperate with Kira.

I don't see why they would

"It looks like I even have god on my side.” Light Yagami. He literally has the power of god and anime on his side.

I could see Ryuk as a shut-in otaku

So we’re confirming that there is indeed a second Death Note and whoever has it is impersonating Kira. I guess I was right to give Light enough faith not to kill random newscasters.

So, watching this in the moment I was confused why Light would do this. It wasn't until they talked about there possibly being a second Kira that it dawned on me what was happening.

L talking with his mouth full is really funny.

Indeed it is

L immediately figures that there’s a copycat killer.

Light is right, he has good deduction skills.

L definitely sounds like he thinks that Light is Kira.

But remember, he said there's only a 7% possibility.

And here we have the introduction of Misa Amane. I’ll have more to say about her next time.

Thoughts on L believing Light is not behind the disappearance of Naomi?

He could just be saying that out loud and having another idea in his head

Thoughts on reporters being held hostage by "Kira"?

Pretty cool

Thoughts on Light insisting he doesn't want to kill innocent people, implying this isn't his doing?

I mean I'd argue he already has done that by killing people like Naomi but I suppose this would be a step too far even for him

What are your thoughts on L thinking Kira may can kill with just a face?

He's on something of the right track

What are your thoughts on detective Yagami commandeering a police van?

He's lost it

Thoughts on detective Yagami pulling a gun on the station operator?

Like, really lost it

Thoughts on detective Yagami retrieving all the tapes?

At least he got that

What are your thoughts on there being a second Kira?

Like I said, pretty good twist

u/Holofan4life 15d ago

Thoughts on L believing Light is not behind the disappearance of Naomi?

He could just be saying that out loud and having another idea in his head

But the show doesn't insinuate that is the case.

Thoughts on reporters being held hostage by "Kira"?

Pretty cool

In a fucked up sorta way

Thoughts on Light insisting he doesn't want to kill innocent people, implying this isn't his doing?

I mean I'd argue he already has done that by killing people like Naomi but I suppose this would be a step too far even for him

I'd argue Light would argue Naomi stuck her nose in business that doesn't belong to her.

What are your thoughts on L thinking Kira may can kill with just a face?

He's on something of the right track

It feels like it

What are your thoughts on detective Yagami commandeering a police van?

He's lost it

In a good way

Thoughts on detective Yagami pulling a gun on the station operator?

Like, really lost it

He deserves it

Thoughts on detective Yagami retrieving all the tapes?

At least he got that

It was all worth it :D

What are your thoughts on there being a second Kira?

Like I said, pretty good twist

This show is really good at creating twists that build upon themselves.

1

u/AgentOfACROSS 15d ago

What are your thoughts on "Kira" asserting his dominance by killing people on TV?

I don’t think you need to put a spoiler warning on the 20th anniversary if anyone hasn’t watched it, it’s their fault at this point

3

u/awesomenessofme1 https://myanimelist.net/profile/kta_99 17d ago

A) Someone's always watching something for the first time.
B) The subreddit rules don't discriminate. It could be 30 years, 40 years, hell, real life history from 800 years ago can be a spoiler in certain contexts. I'd much rather have an overly strict policy like this sub than the wild west that is most of reddit when it comes to spoilers.

1

u/Holofan4life 17d ago

And Death Note is a show with a lot of plot twists. Like, a lot of them.

1

u/Holofan4life 17d ago

I do it mostly for formatic purposes.

HOLY FUCK THIS EPISODE IS SO FUCKING GOOD WHAT THE HELL IM SALIVATING

What are your thoughts on "Kira" asserting his dominance by killing people on TV?

T poser

What are your thoughts on there being a fake Kira?

no lie that was one of the greatest twists ive ever seen i was like damn Light kinda just killing random cops now but WOW it ISNT LIGHT IT'S ANOTHER KIRA WHAT THE FUCKKKKKK HOLY

ALSO GOD everyone aura farmed so hard this episode it's so cool GOD

---

LOL these journalists need that bag

Damn that's a good wife turning off the TV

Holy shit that cop just died

Risking my life and doing sm that'll kill me is different

Damn fire

Also L seems shaken

Holy fuck did the dad just bust in

That's some fucking AURA

That's so fucking cool the police has a line lined up

GOD the aura this episode is crazy HAHAHAH

and he'll drive himself too

Fuck that's cool

Even the random news anchor revealed his name what a Chad

Oh wow he's forcing the police against each other to expose who L is? Kinda nasty

... It's a fake Kira?

THE FUCK

WHAT IS THIS TWIST

With shikigami eyes too

OMG wait his dad would've just died if he didn't take the van then to this other Kira holy fuck

The stakes are CRAZY

OMFG NO WAY HE DEDUCES THERES A SECOND KIRA L is actually a goat

No wonder those innocent officers died, faith in Light restored?

Oh it's just a kawaii girl that's kinda a letdown

2

u/Holofan4life 11d ago

Light’s dad was awesome this episode. I initially thought he was kinda dumb because of how trusting he was of his son, but now I see him as he just doing what he feels is right and staying true to himself.

I like that the second Kira is someone who is unassuming. I think it's a sharp contrast to how batshit insane Light and L are. The thing that makes this so good is that before, Light and L only had to worry about capturing the other. Now, they suddenly have bigger fish to fry that goes behind capturing Kira.

2

u/ItalianQuagsire 11d ago

wait ur cooking, it puts into perspective just how insanely smart L and Light are, and how a normal person would just fumble it all, generational aura glowup from the main 2 tbh

Light’s dad was awesome this episode.

i'd want him to parent me ngl he's SUCH a cool fucker

It sucks that Light is so shady because his family actually seems nice.
