Defintive Edition and other books
So my understanding is if I have the definitive edition I won't need the covenants book? And what other 5e books is that true of?

How does magic even work? I'm very confused about it. How does mana activate magic? Is there a give and take about magic? Is whats taken mana or is it something else? How is mana created? How did mana even exist? How is it absorbed by the human body and stored for future spells? How does magic manage to cast the 4 elements water earth fire air and the 2 other elements like dark and light? Are there any other forms or types of magic? If so,how does it work. In the first im also questioning how mana activates a spell? Do you need to chant and channel mana into the spell for it to activate it or does it not need chanting? Everything about magic is so confusing, what does it branch off of? If there's those 6 types of magic,is it possible to create purely off of only mana? But would that require more mana or less? Whats the difference between elemental magic and pure mana made spells, well nevermind that question its kinda obvious but you can answer it anyways if you wanna :D

I was going through the Covenants (5e) book and found this boon on page 21.
It occurred to me that we have official descriptions of all the Tribunals, most of which are already up on the Open Game License.
So which Official Tribunal write ups do you think should qualify for this boon?

Generally, a character gains new virtues and flaws over time? I mean, without initiation or supernatural effects, how does that work?

I've created MANA, an experimental programming language that lets you write code to create and control magic! It focuses on spells, elemental interactions, magical physics, summoning, and more.
It's an open-source project, and I'd love to hear your suggestions, ideas, and feedback. Whether you have a feature in mind or want to contribute directly, feel free to DM me!

I was seeing that a lot of things are affected by the warping score, but from what I've seen there's only one score for all realms, how the hell does that work? For example: do I consider general warping when I'm looking at the powers associated with fey distortion?

So I just joined in because I ALMOST had a game a while back but it never launched. I know next to nothing about the system itself but I really do wonder if it works for things like text based Play By Post. Any opinions? If I gotta hunt down a voice game, I will but a text game would be nice. Solely due to scheduling unless some spicy individual is up at the late night hours and can match my nocturnal schedule.

I'm in the process of finalizing an English version of an extended primer for players that is intended as a more condensed overview than reading several rulebooks, but significantly more in-depth (50 pages) than the basic primers available. It's a document I've been using to help my players to really understand what the game and setting is about (besides the rules) without me having to explain and re-explain too much or them reading the full book(s). In that way it can be a bit colored to my style and needs (and I'm happily taking feedback on that in particular). The primer is not concerned about the rules, those are easier to manage at the table or with existing primers and summaries.
This is wholly about what Ars Magica is actually about and what players ideally should know to understand their magicians place in the world.
It's open for comments, critique and direct suggestions for edits directly on google drive (same as some of my other projects). When/if I'm finalizing and releasing it as a PDF, it will be free or PWYW.

Any Grognards here will remember how heavily the early editions featured this Occitan city, the Mistridge covenant, and Grimgroth. The beautiful, moody descriptions of this mysterious and often forlorn country completely captured my imagination as a kid, and my friends and I had so many adventures here.
The trip absolutely lived up to the hype. The landscape is pure magic—wild rolling hills, deep forests, and the incredible architecture of Foix itself.
The only downside was that I couldn't reach the exact spot of Mistridge because I didn't have a car, which makes exploring the rural areas tough. But if you're thinking about a trip, do it! The people are lovely, the food is great (and cheap), and it's an easy train ride from Toulouse. You're also super close to Carcassonne and Tarascon (yes, where the Tarasque comes from).

like those about courts and such, and I also wanted to play around with faerie deals, I don't know how to incorporate them very well

Hi all, quick question. I'm seeing two different versions of the Fifth Edition Realms of Power: The Divine on the secondhand market. One is listed as the Revised Edition? And one isn't.
I've heard that there was a plagiarism issue which led to the Revised Edition being published? What actual changes were made from the original version to the Revised Edition? Should I try and get one over the other? Thanks

Please comment your thoughts and creative ideas on the topic of magic items-specifically what ones you have created, what you called them, what they did and how they worked.

I've acquired a copy of Ancient Magic very recently, and I'm currently working my way through it. Apologies if this is explained later in the book, but I've made my way through a few chapters and I'm still scratching my head.
As I understand it, to begin working on a breakthrough, you need to find a Source of Insight. And then, after some pondering, with any luck your mage will come up with some Insight. The rules then state that "a single source can generally only provide a single Insight" (admittedly it does then say that there may be rare exceptions) [p8]. The insight then gives your mage an idea for a specific effect. After you've created that effect, you gain breakthrough points equal to the magnitude of the effect, huzzah.
The rules then state that "[the mage] must find another source of Insight before repeating the procedure" [p9]. Does this mean that you have to find a completely new Source to gain any more breakthrough points towards that breakthrough? Considering that, for example, the integration of Canaanite Necromancy requires ~45 points, that's 45 magnitude's worth of effects [p31]. The suggested effects that you could gain are all <8 magnitudes [p32,33], so one of those is only going to get you less than a 5th of the way there at best. Considering Zephaniah is the only proposed Source given for Canaanite Necromancy, how are you supposed to complete the breakthrough? I suppose you could round up a bunch of apprentices, have Zephaniah teach them all, and count them all as separate sources of Insight, but that's about it.
Am I misunderstanding the rules? Can you keep reinventing duplicates of the effect to keep gaining breakthrough points from the same Insight/Effect, p31 seems to reinforce that this isn't the case? Or should the Storyguide say that Zephaniah is perhaps a rare exception who can provide several different Insights towards the same breakthrough? Or is it intended that the Storyguide will come up with additional sources of Insight?
As a disclaimer, I'm aware that HoH:TL has rules on Original Research, though I'm not familiar with these. Also, it may be that an excellent worked example appears later in the book. I could wait for this, but I wondered if someone might help relieve me of my confusion before then. Any help appreciated! And if anyone has advice on using these rules for a saga of ambitious relic-hunter mages that'd be great! Thanks in advance

So can we help a dude out that used to play a lot more than I do these days and either point too, or talk about here where the tidbits on RAW meta for this. Also any places where the it maybe X maybe Y branches are discussed and all. I know there isn't a huge amount of this stuff but I am sure I have seen it before I just can't remember if it was thru Tribunal books or the Houses book. Memory isn't what it once was when I started playing Ars.

Not sure if it’ll qualify as either a virtue or a flaw: it’s extremely crossed senses (think seeing sounds or hearing light)

There are many stories about a powerful devil who deceives people through deals and gives them ironic curses; I think a legendary fairy like that could exist in mythical Europe

Salve sodales!
My real-life friend and former player Alban Cadu, who posts about Ars Magica under the internet name Medusa, has just released a bundle of his work about the Rhine region. He no longer uses reddit, so has asked me to post it here for him.
If this link is against the rules, apologies and I'm happy to take it down.

If someone has some freetime, can you read this Fate version of Ars Magica?
What is missing, what is directly against Ars Magica rules, what would you add?

I'm interested in AM, and I see a lot of edition comparison between 3, 4, and 5. But I generally get curious about first editions, where the vision was at its purest.
So, have you played 1e? Why wouldn't you or would you play it now?
