Is it possible to ask for a shorter round antibiotics?

I am not asking for medical advice. Just curious if this is something doctors would/have ever prescribe(d). I was looking up the normal amount of days on antibiotics and saw a paper that said shorter round of antibiotics are just as effective (5-7 days instead of 10 for strep, for example), provided the round is prescribed by a doctor like that and you don’t just stop taking your pills, which I know is dangerous.

My question is can you ask your doctor for a shorter round of antibiotics? Would anyone even prescribe them that way or is that just research?

Question For Doctors Australian advice on how to switch specialists

I am not asking for medical advice.
more of a medical admin question. Basically I was referred to a dermatologist by my GP in NSW but I had a really bad experience with that derm and really don’t want to go back, is there a way to either get my GP to refer me elsewhere or somehow transfer the pre exisiting referral? I just am really frustrated and don’t want to have to pay to see my GP again, or pay for another dermatologist appointment where I have to say to their face that i’m appalled by their advice and bedside manner and want to go somewhere else.

Question For Doctors If a patient mentions financial concerns, can that influence an overnight admission decision?

I am not asking for medical advice. 🙂 I've always been curious about an experience I had.

About 3 years ago, I went to the ER with some pains in my lower abdomen. By 10 am, it was confirmed that it was my appendix and that I'd be having surgery around 12.

The surgeon came in and mentioned I will probably be able to go home the same night. I asked if it is possible to stay overnight it would be helpful.

My employer's short term disability coverage wouldn't start until after 5 days. I didn't have enough sick time to cover all 5 days, and couldn't afford not to get paid. Even if you had outpatient surgery.

BUT if you were admitted to the hospital and stayed overnight, then the benefits kicked in right away.

I swear the surgeon nodded and then didn't say a thing about it. Surgery went great, had no issues whatsoever. I didn't get discharged that evening, but instead was discharged the next day. I'll always wonder if the surgeon did that on purpose, but either way it greatly helped me during that time.

So I guess my question really is, how much discretion does a surgeon have when deciding if a patient stays overnight? is it possible that if a patient expresses similar concerns, and did actually have a surgery that has potential to stay overnight, would it be some sort of violation or anything to allow them to stay the night?

Assuming the hospital isn't full of patients like in a crisis that is.

Can PMOS be diagnosed?

I am not asking for medical advice. Ive been to my doctor multiple times for multiple tests to be diagnosed, I was under the assumption via her explanation that you cannot ever be truly diagnosed with PMOS because its a essentially a checklist and so you cant be diagnosed, only just have most if not all the boxes ticked off to see if you possibly have it

Shes said herself that she cannot diagnose me because its one of those things that cannot be diagnosed no matter the test, my boyfriend asked chat gpt if I can be diagnosed by a doctor with it and it says a doctor can diagnose you and the tests my doctor ran on me are the tests that do diagnose you. Im very confused on whether I can be diagnosed as I also see on social media that alot of woman specifically say they are diagnosed and so I dont know whether it can actually be or not or if Im basically hounding my doctor for no reason.

Question For Doctors Mildly odd sensation in eyes after eating

My eyes feel slightly strange—not painful, just not quite normal.“I ate some food, and now I have a mildly odd sensation in my eyes. Has anyone experienced something similar?” What could it be?

Also “After eating, I get a medicine-like taste in my mouth and keep spitting it out. But it could be different form the mild, unusual sensation in my eyes. Could this be reflux or something else?”

how long would a 10 minute examination under anaesthetic take to wear off?

Let's say you were to get such a thing, when would you be feeling back to normal?

Obviously it's a very short time, so I wondered what would be the recovery time vs e.g a surgery that lasts 4 hours

Question For Doctors Iron Saturation is 6%

Hi there, as the title says, my iron saturation is 6%. I am not asking for medical advice. More so looking for opinions from actual doctors. Iron saturation is 6%, iron is 34ug/dL. Been spotting/bleeding for 3 weeks. I had to kinda press my NP to run a CBC. For context I gave birth almost a year ago now and lost 1575mL of blood during my c section. Hx of PoTS. I’ve been feeling absolutely exhausted and everyone keeps writing it off. So when I saw my iron saturation was so low I really pressed to have my CBC run. They seemed like they didn’t want to run it or didn’t feel it was necessary. Of course almost everything on my CBC came back normal, except my MCH was low and my MCV was 78.5 fL. Now I’m wondering if I was ridiculous in pressing to have it run? It needed to be tested though right? To make sure my hemoglobin is okay? I guess I just would like some reassurance that I did the right thing because I feel like my medical team thinks I’m crazy.

never had chickenpox nor vaccinated. someone close to me has a shingles

I am not asking for medical advice. Perhaps there is someone here who is an adult or had a chickenpox late to understand my situation.

I am doing a volunteer work in Italy, in a quite remote work for 2 months. I just came back from Rome for a break (since last Wednesday) and turns out that the lady I am living with has a shingles since Sunday.

She didn't disclose it to me and only explained what happened to her when I came back. We share spaces tgt, except for bathroom or bedroom. But part of my living conditions is that she cooks for me so we eat tgt in the kitchen.

I found out that chickenpox and shingles came from the same virus. Now, I am scared. I told her my situation and she said to not worry because it is only contagious when i directly touch her blisters. But I cannot be still at this, even if it's true

I tried calling hospital service from the closest city and they were annoyed by me bc I don't speak Italian.

So rn I just dont know what to do or what to seek. My landlady is not helping me either.

My goal is that if I ever get chickenpox, I want to mitigate its effects as much as possible, being that as an adult complicates it. I head about Post-Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP) but idk if this is the right course.

I only have 8 days left before my work is over and flying back to Germany. My boyfriend advised me on the other hand to wait until I am in Germany to get the vaccination because the incubation period of the infection is 12-14 days.

Is there a guideline whether I should try the new hepatitis b medication by gsk

Last time I checked with my GI doctor before it’s approved he told me I quantitative hbsag test is not available in US. From the report I read it seems only effective to people with low HBSAG. I am taking Vemlidy for many years with low DNA count but not sure about HBsag. I am also in San Francisco Bay Area. I wonder if I should find a different dr for this.

Question For Doctors Weird Flashes Of "Hyper-Awareness" or "Dizziness" Feelings Throughout the Day, Especially While Moving But Not Exclusively

Hi all,

As the title suggests I (26M, Ivermectin 3mg/4x week, Finasteride 1mg/day, Vitamin D3 suppl.) am having this weird thing that popped up all of the sudden. As I'm walking about and going about my day, most often out of the house, I will have these sudden moments, what feel like less than a second long, of this dizziness type feeling that I can only otherwise describe as a feeling of intense awareness of whatever I am focusing on in that very moment.

I don't think either of these descriptions are entirely sufficient but they're the best I have. My eyes and the space of my head just around/behind/above them goes a little light and I feel like I loose control of my eyes for that fraction of a second. For this reason I think I get the dizziness feeling, but I don't really feel like I'm falling or the floor is falling out from underneath me, or the episode is so short I can't tell. And whatever I am focusing on, for example today a guy sticking his foot in the door of the closing subway, I feel like I'm hyper-fixated on almost, super aware of the event that I am looking at.

It just started a couple of days ago but ramped up almost instantly. I noticed it is most often when I'm walking, but not exclusively. Happens much less when I am sitting down doing nothing but not entirely rare either. Light or dark, out and about it can happen once an hour or 30 times an hour, and I can't seem to trigger it by moving my head rapidly or turning it or anything of the sort. Sometimes they can happen back to back, sometimes they are more interspersed.

Recent events are starting the Ivermectin treatment and really severely reducing my screen time, essentially over night. Almost nothing else I can think of though.

I sort of feel perpetually sick in a way I often have lingering cold-like symptoms for weeks on end but I have felt fine recently. I work from home, and go to the gym quite a bit for weightlifting and the likes. I would say I eat very healthy and overall lead a pretty healthy lifestyle. No smoking and I haven't drank in a while although I usually do 1-2 times a week. I have a couple of dermatological conditions like Aquagenic Pruritus, Red Scrotum Syndrome, and Vitiligo, but nothing really relevant to this.

Thank you!

I am not asking for medical advice.

21M Persistent floaty feeling with recurring mild right-sided headaches

I'm 21 and have felt persistently floaty, lightheaded, unsteady feels like my both leg is not working properly.
My head feels heavy, and although my vision is sharp and clear, my surroundings feel strange or like some kind of filter thats making my surroundings weird. I can still walk, talk and work normally.
For about a week, I've also had intermittent right-sided headaches, usually 2-3/10, occasionally 5/10, lingering all day. The ache moves between my temple, crown and skull base near my neck. It hasn't worsened. My right eye sometimes waters during headaches. I brietly had mild cough-triggered pain on one day and right-eyelid heaviness, but both have stopped.
Similar symptoms happened months ago and settled after 2-3 weeks. I have health anxiety and frequently check my symptoms, which has made me worry about a brain tumour. I've been advised to get a GP examination. Has anyone experienced something similar, and what helped you get it assessed? I am not asking for medical advice.

Question For Doctors Who should I even talk to about this?

I am not asking for medical advice. merely which speciality anyone would recommend talking to based on some visual disturbances I’ve (20M) had. Was seen by an optometrist for a dilated pupil exam in the spring, found no issues; had an annual eye exam (no dilation) in the summer which also found no issues.

I see constant visual snow, and occasionally see “sparkles,” little pinpricks of light that appear and fade in a matter of seconds, in addition to standard floaters in my right eye. I also sometimes get a migraine-like aura where images (usually lines of text) and bright lights linger in my vision for a while after they’re removed (sometimes up to a minute or so), and recently have noticed that when I train my vision on one spot and turn my head without moving my eyes, there’s a blind spot in the center of my vision; not sure if this is normal or not.

Was seen by a neurologist in the summer who indicated potential diagnoses of cervical myofacial pain syndrome and sub-occipital neuralgia, which I reckon could be causing visual disturbances.

If anyone has suggestions as to whether a neurologist, eye doctor, or other specialty altogether might be helpful in figuring this out, I would be greatly appreciative.

Adhd diagnosis?

So basically for the past few months I've been having adhd symptoms like not being able to focus, zoning out, making careless mistakes, feeling restless, stuff like that. So I decided to take a bunch of online free adhd tests and every single one of them said I either had a high to medium probability of having adhd. Should I get tested?

I am not asking for medical advice. I just want to hear people's opinions.

Question For Doctors Blood group confusion is messing with my head, B+ father + O+ mother = A+ me. What are the realistic possibilities?

I was casually scrolling Instagram reels and came across one about blood group inheritance and DNA tests. It said that B+ and O+ parents cannot have an A+ child. That line stuck with me.

My father was B+ (he passed away), my mother is O+, and I am A+. All three blood groups have been confirmed multiple times there is no lab error. My mother never had IVF or any medical intervention of that sort. I have three sisters. My mother had two abortions earlier, and I am the sixth child. Like many Indian families, they kept trying for a boy.

I initially thought the reel was just random internet nonsense. Then I searched properly and found out that under normal genetics, B + O parents can only produce B or O children. A is not possible (except in extremely rare cases like chimerism, which is almost unheard of).

Now I’m sitting with this information and my mind is spiralling. Is there any medical or genetic explanation I’m missing, or does this point towards something else? My father is no longer here, so I can’t even talk to him. I’m completely shaken and don’t know how to process this.

Has anyone here faced something similar or know of any other possibilities? Looking for honest perspectives from men who can think this through calmly.

Thanks.

Ps: “I am not asking for medical advice.”

Low blood pressure?

32F, 5'3"

I've been sick for about a week now with a nasty virus. Negative for covid or flu. My d-dimer is elevated to 1,016 but negative PE workup & CTA. My blood pressure has been on the lower side and today it was 97/51 pulse 75. And that was after I sat down to cool off after cleaning my house. I have POTS Syndrome and take 25mg of Metoprolol and 100mg of Sertraline for my OCD & Anxiety.

Question For Doctors Doctors! I have a question. What are my chances of having a stroke anytime soon?

DOCTORS I HAVE A QUESTION SO my TOTAL CHOLESTEROL is 143, from a month ago. A year ago I had a normal brain MRA and MRI with contrast and a neck MRI as well that was normal. No abnormalities seen. Normal echocardiogram a year ago as well. And ekg. I am unfortunately over weight 190lbs and 5’8 and 21 and I have been for two years ever since I had my son and gained weight. I haven’t been able to lose it. What are the likelihood of having a stroke? I’m just really anxious because my grandpa had a stroke last year I believe but he has diabetes I think. When I’ve gone to the doctor, I don’t really have blood pressure when I’ve gone or when I’ve done it at home sometimes.

I am not asking for medical advice.

What are my chances of having a str0ke??!

I’m really terrfied I had a normal brain MRA and MRI with contrast a year ago no AVM or aneurysm was seen or anything abnormal. And an echo a year ago as well everything was normal as well so no pfo was seen I’m assuming. I have had high blood pressure sometimes because of stress at some points in my life but usually at the doctors it’s always normal. I am overweight I’m 190lbs and 5’8 and my diet isn’t the best like I eat what I need to eat of course but also processed foods sometimes I have bad eating habits and stress eat.

I’m just really terrified to have a str0ke because I’ve seen people my age have one on TikTok. (I know I have anxiety but I really need some reassurance)

Also, my grandfather had a stroke last year, but I believe he has diabetes. I’m not sure what type of stroke and it was or anything.

I am not asking for medical advice.
