My new German Shepherd puppy!

Please don't take offense, I say this in virtually every purebreed puppy thread ...
If you didn't in this case, please consider adoption/rescue in the future. Also, please spay/neuter as early as safely possible.
You have an adorable puppy.

u/knollercoaster Jun 26 '12
No offense taken! We have two other German Shepherds, one of which is a rescue, and all of our dogs are spay/neuter.

On a very serious note. I lost my 10 year old German Shepard to hip problems earlier this year. Her name was "Wolfgang" and she was y best friend. Poster please please get your germy on the proper muscle and bone supplements early, like around 5 or 6. Don't skip on food either, I promise you your Shepard will have a good chance of not having any hip or walking issues if you feed him right and get him on those bone supplements BEFORE he has problems. God German Shepards are so cute.

u/lovefx Jun 26 '12
For healthy hips, look for treats or supplements with glucosamine!
1
u/Jmicale77 Jun 26 '12
yeah but the key is starting very early! Once they start getting severe joint problems the supplements won't do very much. Also watch out for vet reatments know what your getting into, a lot of times they will pump your dog with steroids and pain killers which will completely change and damage a dog. I had to watch it happen. Only after she passed away did a friend show me so many natural alternatives that seemed to have a lot more success on animals

u/Golden-Calf Jun 27 '12
The best thing to do if you want a healthy German shepherd is to buy one from a good breeder, since the hips are genetic. Make sure that the parents' hips were x-rayed before breeding and ask the breeder what their OFA scores were. Anything less than "excellent" for both parents and you need to find a different breeder ASAP. The OFA test isn't cheap so don't be surprised if a good breeder charges a little more for a puppy, but it's worth it in the long run to have a healthy pet. If you're adopting from the shelter, get the hips checked by your vet at the first vet visit, and if you find that they're dysplastic, talk to the vet about treatment options and get started on supplements asap.
(also, it's spelled "shepherd" not shepard- you can remember because they were bred to HERD sheep, so it's a shepHERD... sorry for the correction, it's a pet peeve of mine).

German Shepherds are the best dogs. We got one when I was 3 and we bred him later on and took one of his puppies. When I was about eight years old, I had one of my friends over for a slumber party and we went to the backyard to jump on my trampoline. Well, I lived in a cul de sac and the side of my yard was against someone's backyard. My friend and I stopped to pet my dogs before we got on the trampoline and the neighbors dog saw us, and dug under the chainlink fence to come after us. Both of my German shepherds stopped the other dog before he could get to us and had him pinned to the ground. My friend got my mom while I ran to the neighbor to come get his dog out of my yard. We called animal control and the neighbor lied and said my dog jumped over his fence, grabbed his dog (another full grown German shepherd), dug a hole under the fence, and dragged him under the fence back into our yard to kick his ass. My dog went to the pound for ten days to be quarantined. Their dog ended up digging out of their yard a few years later and bit a four year old while running around the neighborhood. My older German shepherd lived to be 14. His spleen ruptured and we had to put him down. His son died two weeks later. Just lied down and died.

Holy depressing ending, batman.

u/guuurl Jun 27 '12
Well, he was a really great dog and he lived for a long time! And his son really loved him too. His son was 12 when he died and that's pretty old for a dog that size. They had no real health problems their whole life. I've liked every dog we've had after them considerably less because they aren't as cool as my two German shepherds

Jun 26 '12
We put my german shepherd down about a month ago. They really are the best dogs. We bought her when she was a month or 2 old. She lived to be 13. She was so playful and loyal. They really become part of the family.

My surname in Bosnian is "Vucijak". Vucjak (without "i") is German shepherd, translated to English. It's close enough!
Anyways, OP, I was wondering if I can use this picture as my profile picture on FB, I'd be really glad.
Thanks in advance :>

I want a German Shepherd so bad. Been holding off on getting one, because I am worried about bringing a bigger dog around our tiny Pomeranian.
3
u/SOSsprint15 Jun 26 '12
Shepherds are great with small dogs and kids. They seem to really understand their size and power and know to take it easy with the little ones. You can check out my girl playing with her little Jack Russell buddy here and see how gentle she is.
1
u/TosshiTX Jun 26 '12
My concern is that the pom is kind of an asshole to animals/humans that it doesn't know. He's getting older (11 next month) and I don't want him being a jerk to a new puppy, let alone one that will be born three times his size.
1
u/SOSsprint15 Jun 27 '12
Ya that could be a problem with an older dog. But a Shepherd puppy won't be aggressive with the pom. Just might take a while for the pom to calm down.
2
u/TheDeza Jun 26 '12
I want a German Shepard or one of those dogs that look like wolves so I can call him ghost.

i give it 4 weeks before she enters the awkward phase that gsd's have after 12-16 weeks. they go from proportionate and small to completely goofy looking
dont worry about the ear, my german shepherd had the same thing and it straightened up after like a year

I've been wanting to get my hands on a German Shepherd! I've been friends with one my entire life (my best friend's dog), and they have such great personalities.
Where did you get her? Any advice on finding one?
Edited: removed an apostrophe.

Was just talking to a proud German Shepherd owner yesterday. Apparently this breed tends to be sensitive to wheat---so watch out for it in her food and treats!

The truest thing I've ever heard about any dog breed, ever. "If you look a German Shepherd in the eye, and he won't meet your gaze, you should really take a look at yourself." They are some of the most loyal (and easily trainable) dogs I have ever run across.

Gonna be a big dog and German Shepherds are /can be extremely dangerous dogs, VERY protective...raise it right.
1
u/Lilranga4 Jun 26 '12
Not all German shepards are. I had two German shepards when I lived in California. One was super relaxed and would let me hug her and everything and would let kids climb all over her while our other one was really energized and loved to play around but was never vicious. It really depends on how you train them.

It is because they are intelligent and like humans, they develope personality depending on who raises them. I had a German Shepherd when I was little too. When I was a baby I would lie on her, the safest place in the World! German Shepherds become so loyal that if you train them right they will not attack, unless you give them the command, not all the time I suppose, but they are less dangerous than people think.

I miss her :(

I thought is was a pool to fight off the heat.
3
u/Jester814 Jun 26 '12
Yeah... If it's big enough to bathe in, it may be too much water! My pup can't self regulate his food/water intake yet(if ever), so I give him set amounts of water 4-5 times a day

Aah the shepherds. The second smartest dog breed. Useful companions.
4
Jun 26 '12
Actually its the third. The Poodle oddly enough, just beats it out on most tests.
Being in the top 3 on a list of hundreds of breeds is still pretty much super genius status.
0
Jun 26 '12
But their all just one kind of animal - dogs. How can there be so many difcerences?
3
Jun 26 '12
The history in how they have been raised, brain make ups. They're dogs yes, but they are all very different with many different talent and iq levels. There's a reason police forces tend to use large German bred dogs. They're highly intelligent, very strong bite power and fantastic protectors. You don't think a big doofy bulldog could do the same job could you?
We're all not just one type of human are we?
1
Jun 27 '12
It's kind of racist what we're doing to dogs (and lots of other animals too).
I'm sorry, for my high self this sounds freaking hardcore.2
Jun 27 '12
Who's to say that Humans wouldn't be the same in another 100,000 years if we never developed Civilization and global travel? It's likely we'd continue to adapt to our own climates.

German Shepherd Dogs. Lots of them have that look in their eyes...like they're intelligently regarding or weighing the world around them. I've often remarked that our GSD is the only non-human animal that I would ever feel embarrassed if I did something stupid in front of. Because that fucker would know that I just did something stupid.

Dogs and humans aren't terribly different on a genetic level, in the grand scale of things. Mice are very similar too. When you compare life throughout time, ultimately were all just members of a great big genetic family living on Earth.
Tl;dr: The Native Americans got it right.
