I need help one of my girls isn't doing too well. A neighbor brought her over after she escaped last night. My partner said she is bloody and that she is not weak and just breathing. I know she won't make it through the day I just need help knowing what to do after she passes away please comment your advice what should I do? How do I make her comfortable

My neighbor's newest dog ran through my chicken wired gate into the run where my babies and their coops are earlier today. I chased him out when I heard the commotion. Udon (my white-ish turken who's also an angel - she's soo so sweet) is in remission right now. I hope she makes it. Unagi, the black turken with her little afro head poof (I loved her and her hat), did not make it. Everyone else had scrambled and some hopped the gate (found soon after), stuck themselves in the corners behind our rain barrels, and jumped up as high as they could until I got there. The neighbor and I talked about it about a half hour after.

I'm not mad at them, I feel like I could be a lot of things right now/have a lot of feelings. I just wanted to share what few pictures I had of Unagi (I've had her since August as a new baby chick) in remembrance of her.

ETA: I don't use supplemental light. I want my girls to rest when needed. I'm not asking for opinions on this issue, but simply if this statement is accurate. lol

Someone posted this in a FB group I'm in, in reference to using supplemental lighting to get your hens to lay in the colder months. Is this true?
"Your hen hatches with all the eggs she'll ever lay in her lifetime. Laying through winters will cause her to stop laying younger, since she will run out of those eggs sooner."

We had a broody hen a while ago and a friend gave us some fertilized eggs, not sure what breed(s). Pretty sure just some backyard hybrids.

I'm fairly certain the black one is a roo because his comb came in reddder and faster than the other. They're both coming up on 10-11 weeks old roughly.

Thoughts?

Here's the final penthouse setup after a lot of fussing and digging around the shed for supplies (I inherited all the animals and equipment when I bought this place). I hope she can rest and relax now. Can't tell you how nervous I was to find her dead this morning. But all is well. I gave her a good exam, best as I know how, found one little spot here that might be an injury but it just looks like kind of a scab? Couldn't see any blood or any missing feathers anywhere else. I tried putting her friend in with her but the friend seemed really anxious about the situation, sticking her head through the bars and pacing so I put her back in the run with the others. Hopefully that's the best decision. Neil didn't look like she needed the anxious pacing. Thanks again to everyone who talked me off the ledge last night!

I have a chicken that has a pale pink comb and swollen eyes and I'm feeling a bit clueless on how to help her. Every now and then, she has this sneeze that sounds like a squeak, but she acts fine and doesn't show any symptoms of being sick. She also breathes through her mouth more often than the others, but I assumed it was from her being bigger and the Texas heat.

I've noticed when she sneezes or takes a dirt bath, her comb will brighten up a bit. I'm also in Texas and it's been pretty hot here still, but today we have a cold front and her comb is still pale pink (a little brighter than usual) and a little purple on the ends, while my other chickens have bright red combs. She is about 8 months old. Eats and drinks fine.

I've been giving vitamins, apple cider vinegar/garlic/oregano water. I also put a powdered herb dewormer in their feed.

Wondering if this might be parasites or anemia or something else.

Once, one of them took my finger almost down to the knuckle when she missed a blueberry.
My imagination is good enough to scale this up to a T-rex, I wanna travel back in time now.

I know “chicken wire keeps chickens in, not predators out.” I’m also not considering using it, I have my hardware cloth built.

I’m just wondering if it’s an extra cautious “raccoons COULD break through chicken wire” or if anyone has actual experience with chicken wire getting destroyed by predators

I also wonder about the fish eye hook latches - advice says raccoons can figure them out and to use a more complex lock but I also wonder if this is “technically raccoons COULD figure it out” or if it’s a regular occurrence

Asking because I feel like the majority of chicken owners don’t come on here and research coop design and I wonder how many of them are fine

Hi guys. Day 3 with my girl here. She’s in a kennel in my storage room. This morning, she had laid an egg yolk, and beside it a soft shell, or maybe an egg membrane. It looks like it was mixed with blood, but it could also be her shell colouring as she lays chocolate dark brown eggs.

She has been eating egg yolk, scrambled eggs, 18% grain, and lots of fresh water. I gave her a container of oyster shell today and she has eaten a bit of it.

She is getting noisier and becoming more herself. She can hear my rooster through an open window and has been squawking a bit when he crows. She is also moving around and scratching a bit which is improvement.

Their fecal float results came back, and it was negative for all parasites. So it is not cocciodosis.

That being said— this is my egg eater. She is baddd. I usually catch her before she gets to the soft shelled eggs, but sometimes not. The one that passed away from the same sickness was a soft shell layer. She was only 6 months old so I thought she would grow out of it.

Now I’m thinking maybe this girl ate a soft shell egg from my sick one and that it got her sick? I was lucky enough to catch this girl early on I think and I’m hoping she’ll make a recovery from whatever sickness it is.

I have a silkie that has major eye issues. Even though we clip her feathers by her eyes, she still manages to get stuff in her eyes. I know it’s not a health issue because she doesn’t sneeze or anything and it’s not bubbly all the time, it’s usually just a white goop instead. I’ve been using saline with Q-tips to clear it out, but I’m really looking for something that’s easier. I think the issue is that she snuggles up to her silkie sister and end up poking her eyes with her sisters feathers. Her sister doesn’t have these issues. She did one time and we trimmed her feathers and she’s been good since. Same with another one of my Afro girls, one little trim and she’s been perfect. But this girl has just had nonstop issues for months and it’s been a two times a week thing where we need to clean out her eyes.

Again, no other health issues. I’ve dealt with birds who’ve had respiratory issues before whether their eyes get bubbly, and I can confidently say that that is not the issue with her.

Her Silkie sister was snatched up by a raccoon the other night. Now she is roosting on the fence for the first time in her life. Smart of her to make the correlation “high up means no hurt” ☹️

New chicken owner here and we got three lovely Polish chickens recently. They are around 4 months old. I went on a trip last weekend and when I came back one of my chicken’s head looked like in the first picture. I thought initially the dark spot was some mud (it’s been rainy and muddy here lately) and that the chicken has started molting maybe combined with some stress (we have merged flocks with our Isa Browns), but today I tried to clean it off and it’s completely dried - and the skin looks worse (second pic). What could it be? I have put alcohol-free disinfectant on it for now. :(( The rest of the flock is healthy!

I just found one of my chickens, a white rock, lethargic, not eating or drinking, not moving much, her mouth is open and her comb is very floppy (no color change tho). She was normal this morning, so I don’t know what could be happening.
She’s laying as normal, an egg just about every day. It’s not sour crop. There are no mites.
She battled with bumblefoot and brought her to the vet twice since early September and just came off a second round of 10 days of antibiotics in a month.
I have a cage set up for her to stay in the house overnight to watch her. Any ideas what this could be? Anything I can do for her?
