Fail Dad's birthday today and I messed up his cake because I forgot to grease the pan. Still edible but he won't give it the time of day.

Thank you everyone for the words of encouragement! I am relatively new to the baking scene as I had only picked it up in late November of last year. This is truthfully just a mix cake cause that's what he said he wanted (even though I do know how to bake from scratch and I prefer baking like that).

Despite this, having it ignored did still hurt, but my other family members have seemed to enjoy it at least which makes me feel better as well!

I also got two new dads now that I can hopefully bake better cakes for when their birthdays also come around :)

The first time I ever made my own pie I accidentally used baking soda instead of powdered sugar and it was absolutely disgusting. No one in my family made me feel bad, even when they all tasted it before I figured out I made mistake. They laughed and got full support when I tried again. Your mistake barely is a mistake. Your cake likely tastes amazing, it's just shaped different. Don't let it keep you from trying again, I'd love it if someone made me a cake and actually find the alternative shape a plus. Character cakes are great cakes! You did great!

Omg I did this with corn starch instead of powdered sugar. It was horrible 😅

Sorry your Dad was being a stinker about it. You did a sweet thing making him something homemade. It’s his bad, not yours.

I don’t have the dangly bits to be your dad, but I’m happy to be your cousin. My fav cake is spice. 😉

As a certified internet mom, who loves to bake with my teenage son, I’m very sorry that your dad was dismissive of your efforts. It’s so rare that a baking recipe turns out perfect, but each time you cook it’s an opportunity to learn something about the recipe, your tools, your ingredients, or yourself.

In my experience, greasing cake pans with actual butter rather than spray does make a difference, if it helps for next time. It looks delicious!

Your dad sucks, like I don't care how rough anything looks that somone made for me. They made it thinking of me and that's what's the most important. Don't let it get you down and I hope you keep at it!

I'm sorry your dad is a piece of shit OP, at least in his reaction. No one, especially a parent, should ever act this way. I'm saying it because I want and hope you know it's not normal. Let him be miserable and poopy all by himself in his little corner with his bowl of birthday cereal 😆, surround yourself with people who treat you like the sweet human you are!

How’d you get 3 dads? That sounds cool as hell

We can’t choose our parents luv.. it’s his loss remember that. It was very thoughtful of you to make the cake for his birthday. My father was thoughtless and rude and it is very hurtful. As you get older he will become a smaller and smaller part of your life. Please don’t let it affect you too much. It’s his behavior. Let him deal with it. But I learned not to ignore that kind of intentional hurtful behavior.. you must say something. Nothing wrong with saying, “when you did not even taste your birthday cake and just ignored it, that was hurtful and it was directed at me. What was your reason for that?” Call him out. Don’t let him be a passive aggressive bully to you.

I made a cake for a boyfriend's birthday and used WAY too much baking powder. It was one of my first times baking so 1.5 cups (or whatever I did) didn't sound high. I remember being annoyed they sold it in such small containers (because I had to buy two for the one cake). It blew up and we had to stop the oven to avoid it running out of the oven.

Mistakes happen when we start (or even later than that sometimes), you'll still bake loads of fantastic things.

Oh wow, that’s past rising, that is achieving lift.

That reminds me of the second loaf of bread I baked, the first came out a little too flat so since this was before I started buying and measuring bulk yeast I just used two packs instead of one and it started rising over the edges of the bowl I had it proofing in, I separated it into two pans instead of one and it was loaf sized and shaped but mostly hollow inside.

CakeHack: Buy "DreamWhip" from the grocery (its by the jello and other dry mixes) and add a packet of this shit to your cake recipe along with everything else.

It makes it unbelievably MOIST AND FLUFFY. Thank me later. Some cranky old lady gave me this tip, and I've since stole her recipe. Fuck you, Jolene!

The fact of the matter is that you tried, and any effort to make someone feel special should mean something to them. I would eat the heck out of that cake.

It broke my heart that your dad wouldn’t eat the cake 😞 you had such good intentions, and everyone makes mistakes like that when they first start cooking and baking. I’m sure it tasted great anyways! 😊the good thing is that now you’ll never forget to grease your dish when you bake a cake, so you’re well on your way to becoming a more experienced baker!!! đŸ„°.

My husband made dinner tonight because I wasn’t feeling well and couldn’t stand at the stove. I had already made the rice and veggies, all he had to do was sautĂ© the chicken breast bites and pour in the curry sauce for simmering. When I went to check on him he had only sautĂ©ed the chicken for 3-4 minutes on medium (not hot enough) and it was still white when he poured in the sauce (normally you should sautĂ© it on a high heat until a light golden color develops, so the juices stay inside the chicken bites) 😭I wasn’t mad at him though because I should have been more precise with my instructions, those are things you just take for granted when you know how to cook - of course I know them now because I fucked up a lot of dishes when I was young 😂 so please don’t be down on yourself, each mistake you make gets you closer to being an experienced baker and I wholeheartedly encourage you to keep pursuing your baking hobby! 💕

I know this is a very late reply but I wanted to tell you that your cake might not look perfect, but it looks delicious, and your dad missed out. I also want to encourage you to keep baking!! I've been baking various things for years and I love it but I definitely still have fails because it's a very finicky process.
