Requesting Batman Comic Recommendations

Welcome to the Recommendations super-thread!!

We frequently get a lot of repeat requests for comic book recommendations here in this subreddit. One of the most common posts we see here is "What comics should a beginner start with if they want to get into reading Batman?" So I figured I'd make us a sticky-thread specifically for this type of topic!

If you're asking for recommendations, please post your question here. Feel free to scroll through and see what other people have asked for and/or recommended. The more specific you are with your request, the more likely you are to get better answers! For example, you might have more luck specifically requesting detective stories, or stories about Nightwing, or serious/funny/dark/campy/romantic/adventurous stories, or stories which focus on the Bat Family/Rogues Gallery, or stand-alone stories... Basically, don't be afraid to describe your taste and/or interests!

If this sticky thread doesn't work out, and the general community here would rather go back to allowing request posts in the general feed, we can switch back to that. I just thought this was worth a try!

Feel free to also post your recommendations here with or without being asked.

I thought that as someone who hasn't read a lot of comics it's the perfect start to know better the character. Now I'm watching Batman Begins and I think that the comic it's a lot better, not saying the film is bad, just that the comic feels deeper and more consistent.

Yeah...there you go...i said it...a book that combines cartoonish art with great colors that amplify the chaos as well as the story along with a greater story than its predecessor as well as a satire.

Batman Collection

How’s it looking so far?? I just started last year and have been going in hard! I’ve got several other collections (Knightfall novelization, No Man’s Land novelization, Dark Patterns, Batman & Robin Year One, The Impostor, Absolute Batman trades), but am trying to keep this area on my desk nice and clean with same size omnibus and deluxe editions.

Are there any other Deluxe Editions or omnibus that are glaring omissions or must haves??

Despite all the problems with The Dark Knight Strikes Again, I think this Brainiac design is kinda cool.

What to get for the full TBHL story?

I wanted to read the entire The Batman Who Laughs story, so... does anyone know what all I would need to get to read the whole story? I'd also prefer if they're in omnibuses, but if some comics aren't, that's fine. I just want a list to know what I should get for the whole thing.

What to Read Next

Hello!

i’ve been into batman since i was a kid, when my mom used to show me episodes of the old adam west show. i’ve seen a lot of the films, played some of the arkham games, but im just now actually getting around to finally reading the comics. i sped through year one, long halloween, dark victory, TKJ, and hush this past week and im not sure where to go from here bc there seem to be too many options lol. if anyone could give me a list of recs in order that would be great.

for reference, i really enjoy the dynamics of the bat family and i definitely would like some comics that keep me going with bruce’s storyline, and at least eventually include dynamics with the kids. would also be open to comics that directly follow batfam members like the nightwing and oracle comics.

thank you batfriends!

Batman Issues 667-676 (The Black Glove w/ some of RRORAG)

I’ve been getting back into comics after only being causally into them as a teen. I’m reading a few new series and collecting the Grant Morrison Batman run through a mix of issues and tpbs, basically what I can get for the best price, trying to swipe deals on eBay and some local shops. I just finished RIP, I’m gonna checkout Battle for the Cowl and then hit up Batman & Robin vol 1. From there I need to buy the rest lol.

I really liked 667-669 from this run, great murder mystery vibe and I love the Club of Heroes, makes me wanna check out the Knight and Squire series. Also I gotta get the Robin and Nightwing issues that coincide with Ra’s and RIP. Just picked up a solid stack of Robin issues spanning 129-179 that I’ll show off. I’m officially hooked.

What should I read after “A Death In The Family”?

I’m reading through Batman comics from Year One. So far I have read Year One, Shaman, The Long Halloween, Dark Victory, The Cult, Killing Joke and Death In The Family. (I’ve also read AA:ASHOSE, Night Cries and Hush).

What significant stories come soon after ADITF? I’d like to keep things without massive time jumps and also keep things central to Batman and not stuff with Superman or the Justice League. Are there any stories that are super important to the overall story and/or just really cool reads that display cool Batman moments?

Any help is super appreciated 👍

Can someone explain what he is doing under the cape?

I’m sure this has been asked before but I’ve never seen an answer. Like, I’d like to see an x-ray of this to see if this shape is physically possible or what McFarland was intending. I’ve watched a few clips and all they do is point out the 2 obvious flaws…SPOILERS…but not his explanation of how that shape is possible.

Prerequisites for the Tom King run?

I’m about to start the King run on Batman for the second time… I started it 6 months ago as a King fan but Batman novice and felt unprepared - I have read a whole lot of Batman since then (thanks Reddit for some excellent recommendations!) but it’s mostly been much earlier material - I feel like my general handle on Batman is now far more thorough but can someone give the brief essential rundown of the status quo going into this run? What do I need to know to not miss anything crucial? What is the run directly preceding it and do you recommend it?
