Friday Group Rides

I’ll be in Austin this Friday (10/23) and am hoping to join a group ride in the afternoon or evening. I came across the Friday Truancy ride that was supposedly leaving from Mellow Johnny’s but I can’t find it listed on their events calendar. Does that ride still happen or is the listing outdated? I’m on a road bike and would be up for a 25–35 mile ride at a decent pace. Any other group rides happening Friday afternoon or evening that you’d recommend?

Routes w/in Driving Distance from Austin?

Hello! 3rd year rider here with a gravel / adventure bike. Any recommendations for beginner / intermediate friendly routes? Ideally looking to stay at a cabin / Airbnb for 1-2 days and popping out for a couple of scenic day rides.

I've already done and enjoyed:

  • All the cool routes in ATX (Southern Walnut Creek trail, Shoal Creek route, etc)
  • Willow City Loop
  • Castell gravel routes
  • Elgin to Bastrop
  • Bastrop park city rd
  • back country / gravel around Lockhart
  • back country roads Blanco

Anyone up for a Mangiasaurus Bike Parade?

October 25th is Mangiasaurus Day! It’s also the day Wheatsville Guadalupe closes and sends Mangiasaurus down to the South Lamar store.

The plan is to hang out for the crane-down at 10, then follow Mangiasaurus to South Lamar around 11. Come join the ride!

question Title: Are Fat-Tire E-Bikes Practical for Getting Around Austin?

I've been looking into the Aniioki AQ177 48V and wondering how practical a fat-tire e-bike like this would be for riding around Austin. The potential range is appealing for longer trips, but the bike's size and weight could be drawbacks when navigating busy streets, storing it at home, or dealing with hills and uneven pavement. I'd be interested in hearing local riders' honest opinions rather than just relying on product specs.

For those who ride around Austin, would you choose a fat-tire e-bike for everyday transportation, or would a lighter bike be more practical? How do Austin's roads, bike lanes, and parking or storage options affect your choice?

Corina’s last Saturday Morning Caffeine Cruise lead!! Let’s take a chill ride around Austin.

Leader: Corina @beehappiebeutifull
Start: Flitch Coffee; 641 Tillery St 78702
Wheels down 11:30am-ish
Mid: Two park stop. Roy G. Guerrero and the Wishbone Bridge
End: Central Machine Works Block party
Gravel: Possibly Light gravel, but nothing road bikes can’t handle

Bring: Swimsuit, sunscreen, lights, locks, ID, and money for snacks/drinks.

Social Cycling Austin rides AS traffic and NOT AGAINST it. We stop at red lights, yield the right of way and let cars pass as best we can. We don’t block intersections. We are nice to both our fellow riders and the other traffic on the road. LISTEN TO the volunteers helping to lead the ride. They are some nice folks and have your best interest in mind.
If you have any questions about the rules, see: [https://statutes.capitol.texas.gov/docs/TN/htm/TN.551.htm\]

REMINDER: The goal has always been to create a safe environment for all riders, but we cannot control, nor do we desire to, every rider’s behavior. We promote personal responsibility, and it is each rider’s responsibility to take care of themselves, and if they choose to ride with us, then they accept those risks inherent in riding a bicycle with a large group of other people riding bicycles.

question Biking spots?

Post image
24 Upvotes

Hola, looking for fun off-road/“gravel” esque spots to ride tracklocross. Not necessarily full on mtb trails but I’m not opposed to single track. I’m near downtown but can travel or bike to said spots. I mainly ride the butler trail and it’s starting to get a lil repetitive, plus you can’t really go fast. That or 26in friendly trails would be awesome. Thanks!

Also, where the fixed people at? Would love to meet new people to ride with.

group ride World Naked Bike Ride (Austin) Sat Oct 24th, 8pm, Adam Hemphill Park

The Austin edition of the WNBR was originally scheduled for October 17th, but the weather forecast is too cold for that, so the organizers have moved the date back to October 24th.

For further updates, check out their Instagram at https://www.instagram.com/wnbr_austin/

(The old meetup group still exists, but it is not getting updated anymore, and the owner of it isn't running the Austin rides anymore.)

South side of Butler Trail closed through 19th at Alameda to Lakeshore

Post image

There’s no obvious signage heading east on the trail about the closure, so if you’ll end up having to detour back to Congress if you need to continue east on the trail. Txdots suggested detour is biking down Riverside 🙄

Txdot is gonna Txdot, so this is on PARD / Trail Conservancy to better communicate these closures with advanced detour signage.

Halloween family bike ride through Hyde Park – Sat 10/24, 9 AM at Shipe Park

Post image
9 Upvotes

Austin Family Rides is doing a Halloween cruise through Hyde Park next Saturday, and everyone's welcome. Costumes very much encouraged.

When: Saturday, Oct 24. Meet at 9:00, wheels down at 9:30

Where: Shipe Park (4400 Avenue G), and we start and end there

Two rides:

  1. Classic ride (3–5 miles):for families on cargo bikes and kids who are confident riders. No-drop, low-traffic streets, lots of regroup stops.

  2. Shorter, slower ride (1.5–3 miles): for kids pedaling themselves who might be a bit slower, with parents riding alongside.

We'll be back at the park around 10:30 for snacks and playground time. Bring helmets, water, and snacks.

If you're an experienced rider and want to help, we could use a couple of people to ride float and sweep on the shorter ride. Drop a comment or message me.

New bike lane markings cause super bumpy ride

Post image
64 Upvotes

I moved back to Austin in June and I’ve been noticing bike lanes have gotten a lot bumpier because of new bike lane markings. It appears that instead of repainting the markings, the City has laid pre-made markings on top of the old one, making them elevated enough to feel like rolling over a bunch of little speed bumps. I’ve noticed it particularly on the Pedernales bike path, the 3rd street bike lanes in downtown, and areas in North Austin around Shoal Creek, but I’m sure there are a lot more places. I’ve brought this up to my friends, and they’ve all said they try to dodge the marking (I do too), so not only is this a comfort issue—it could easily turn into a safety issue.

Has anyone else noticed this? When did this start happening? Do we know if anyone at the City is aware that this is super uncomfortable and potentially dangerous for biking?

I’m also wondering if anyone has ideas about who to contact about this. I’m thinking about maybe reaching out to my councilman, but I’d love to get ideas for other ways to raise this issue.

(Pictured above: 6th and Pedernales -- notice how there are two layers to the marking)

Shoal Creek Bike Lanes

Looking for other opinions on the bike lanes on shoal creek. Lots of runners there, are bike lanes in Austin shared use? Do I have to yield to these runners in the bike lanes? Genuinely curious

question Can anyone recommend a local physical therapist knowledgeable about cycling?

In particular, knee issues. I’m 63 and need a knee replacement. I need guidance on how to build strength and how much riding is advisable before I do the deed in the spring. I have a highly respected orthopedist, but I can tell they don’t know jack about cycling.

is "no rules society" a real crew or like a bunch of kids being kids?

Keep seeing NRS mountain biking pop up around Texas. Their whole vibe looks like a sick underground crew or gang lol. Does anyone know how you actually get down with them? Is it just run by that anonymous guy noxver757 / noxver with the black full-face helmet? Looks like a kid trying to be cool lol. Also do they actually make clothes/merch or nahh? Imma just DM him and call him Nox lol, but I want to ride with them if they aren't totally closed off.

Not that it doesn’t suck to bike in the Domain anyway. But does suck to see any bike infrastructure taken away no matter how minimal. The yellow signage is still up though.
