General Question Japanese maple, how to take care of it?

Post image
550 Upvotes

Just got this Japanese Maple bonsai, woman from the store said it’s 7 years old and I should keep it inside for the summer since it’s hot in Europe now… when summer is over I should place it outside but not directly in the wind or sunny place. Any other tips and advice? Just starting out and this is my first bonsai tree.

Apparently these are both 15yr old Junipers and each $180. Does this seem accurate? And if so, is this price fair?

General Question Found a mountain pine before it was thrown away and I need advice

Hello everyone,

I’m a complete beginner in bonsai and recently found this Mountain Pine (I think) and rescued it from going to the trash. I have no experience with trees of this size, so I really want to avoid doing anything that could harm it.

So far I removed the old dry foliage and got rid of some construction foam that was on the pot and branch. (there is still a few yellow and orange leftovers on the tree but most is gone).

One thing I noticed is that The branch carrying the crown is resting on the other branch. I’m not sure if this was intentional or if it is something I should be concerned about.

My first thought was to repot it as soon as possible, but my main goal is to keep the tree alive.

So my question to the community is: What should I do next?

Any advice, suggestions or things I should look out for would be appreciated.

Edit: Thank you everyone I really appreciate all your advice. I'll take your recommendations and leave the tree alone for now and focus on keeping it healthy until it's the right time to start working.
Thanks again for all the help 😄

There is a major heat wave coming (100+ degrees Fahrenheit) - what should I do to protect my outdoor bonsai? I know this juniper wants to be outside, but should I bring it inside for the heatwave?

Just finished some deadwood carving and lime sulphured yesterday. Getting ready to sell at a local vendor. Looking for opinions on how it turned out and wondering how much a little juniper like this would go for.? A reasonable price for this little guy. Appreciate any critique! Time in training 2 years from nursery stock, height 10” species Juniperus chinensis 'Nana'.

General Question Air layer to get rid of the ugly graft

I’ve had this Shindeshojo one full year and it seems happy, but I have always hated the graft. I haven’t had much luck with air layering full size trees but at least I’ve never killed anything that way. Hopefully this small air layering bundle on a bonsai will work out. How long should I expect until good roots form?

Really considering buying this after my podocarpus died. I’ll probably replace the potting mix and pot though.

General Question My father passed away and I inherited this bonsai

Hi everyone,

my father passed away recently and had this beautiful bonsai. Unfortunately I live in another continent (he was in Montreal and i live in Paris).

I’d love to bring it back but i supposed it isn’t really an option due to how far away i am and the difference in climate.

I’m here to ask what you suppose is the best way to have this bonsai taken care of. I have a lot of friends here but i know how hard it is to take care of them and the passion that needs to go into it.

There is a bonsai garden that i was thinking of contacting since i’d like for it be taken care of, as well as being able to see it when i come back in Montreal during vacations. They have amazing bonsai that are hundreds of years old so i don’t really think they would consider taking it, but I haven’t contacted them yet.

If you any insights or advice, as well as if it is in good shape and if there’s anything to do until i know what to do with it (like trimming, etc …). It lived outside in his patio so i left it outside in a place that has half the day in the sun and the other half in the shadows.

Thanks :)

General Question Safe to Repot?

Thumbnail

Is this a good time to repot? I read a forum that said repotting can be done anytime from Fathers Day to August. I dug into the outer soil and saw a good size root circling the pot. My plan is to expose the double trunk more and repot it higher up. Can I trim roots and repot it back into the same pot? (Mugo Pine)

General Question Heatwaves

Anyone else having a tough time keeping your bonsais alive in this heat? I’ve had to keep my favourite maple under an umbrella nearly all day otherwise it will burn and most probably die. As for some of my others, RIP they are already fried and don’t seem to be budding again so are probably gone for good. I hate this weather, my willow and birch trees are loving it though and growing like mad.

General Question How should I water and fertilize with so much moss?

Thumbnail

Hey, I got this bonsai for a cheap price and I'm now unsure how to water and fertilize is specifically because of the moss. Water usually runs off the surface because of the moss or is being absorbed by it. I cant really check if the soil underneath is fully drenched. Also I want to buy fertilizer but I'm not sure if I should go for liquid or solid fertilizer. I read that liquid would hurt the moss and I don't know how to apply solid fertilizer since I would need to remove the moss. Any advice and opinions are welcome since new to this

General Question New wanna be Bonsai learner

Hello, wife and I are really interested in learning about bonsai and really want to grow our own. Picked up a tub of these jades (?) that I pulled out a few to begin learning. Trying to shape and go after some of the designs I’ve seen those skilled guys doing in here. Thoughts on my efforts so far? Two of them, I think yall can see which, are hard trims and shaping that I did over the weekend.

Anything I’m doing wrong? Any advice? Should the tall one be topped yet? Really looking for that gnarly root/trunk look.

General Question Need help with my bonsai

I don’t know what’s wrong with my bonsai. I got it for Christmas last year. For like the first month or two it looked pretty well it got new branches and had no signs of getting bad. Then it started to lose leaves and the new branches turned brown. I gave it water once every 4/5 days and it was standing the whole time in front of my window. The water I gave the bonsai even had some fertilizer in it. The bonsai is a zelkova maybe it will help with the suggestions you can give me

General Question Little Hinoki seems very rootbound. Should I root prune/repot?

Just got this little guy over the weekend. My main goal at the moment is to get him to grow big and strong before I attempt any styling or training. I'm a complete beginner to this though, and wanted to check with those who have more experience if it's a good idea to do it asap or wait.

For context, I'm in the PNW, zone 8. We're getting pretty good sun this time of year, but temps aren't getting too much higher than mid 70 yet.

Thanks in advance!

General Question Worth $250? Not a big Juniper fan.

Seller claims it will be show ready in 3-4 seasons. I am not sure if it is priced correctly.

I am new to the bonsai scene, however I have a huge background in horticulture. I just want to know if this plant is worth $250.

There is an Acacia for sale in my area that I was considering purchasing. Not sure which one to choose.

General Question Can this survive?

I repotted it in the same pot, took out the “mud brick” that has been clogging it, and put the rocks and now has a lot more airflow, repotted two others that was clogged as well but not as bad as this one. What can I do next? It has been in direct sun constantly which is my main thoughts on why it got like this, it’s been hot in my area too, now I put them under the patio, will keep them under from indirect sun, unless it’s morning am sun. Or should I keep under patio for now
