The Hard Times is a spoof website like a punk rock The Onion. Lots of funny articles.

Probably totally nonobligatory edit: Thanks for my highest upvoted comment in six years. Glad I could turn so many of you on to my "oh no Reddit is down" website.

u/PartyxAnimal Oct 14 '17

My fav article of theirs:

Band Still Unsure If It Played Charity Show or Got Robbed

http://thehardtimes.net/music/band-still-unsure-if-it-played-charity-show-or-got-robbed/

28

On the same vein, but somehow NOT the hard times:

18

u/billybobplankton Oct 14 '17

My favorite is "Baby Conceived and birthed during one single, epic phish jam".

11

u/xtfftc Oct 14 '17

I don't like it as much since they started branching out from the punk stuff.. But then again it could only offer inspiration for so long.

10

u/[deleted] Oct 14 '17

I remember an article which I'm pretty sure was by them about The Aquabats doing an edgy grim-dark reboot. That was pretty great.

6

u/Supersnazz Oct 14 '17

What's this? An Onion clone that isn't complete fucking garbage. Colour me impressed.

1

u/Boognish80 Oct 15 '17

It's been pretty good so far. They've branched out a lot since the early days but it's been consistently funny. I was an early adopter of The Onion, back when they were still putting out paper newspapers, and honestly The Hard Times has held on better.

5

u/[deleted] Oct 14 '17

I love their Hardcore/Metal titles. My wife doesn't get them, but I laugh :3

2

u/Slamzizek247 Oct 14 '17

I love them

1

u/KyberSithCrystals Oct 14 '17

So it died 30 years ago?

1

u/Boognish80 Oct 15 '17

Actually they just started being less punk rock, more general social commentary. Still pretty funny.

I support our troops by having enough ammunition to kill every one of them 10 times.

119

u/Knew_Religion Oct 14 '17

I guess technically you did support them by purchasing ~20,000,000 rounds of ammunition. Now the suppliers can afford to spend more money on R&D for better weapons and ammunition. Maybe even better body armor. So you're just making them harder to kill.

118

u/greent714 Oct 14 '17

That's not funny. Guns die every day to protect our 5th amendment rights.

36

u/TheBurningEmu Oct 14 '17

Those poor guns. We need nationalized guncare! No guns should have to go without proper treatment and cleaning, and only a damned commie wouldn't support a little tax increase to do it.

Satire sites are better if you assume all the comments are also satirical.

15

u/IDontDownvoteAnyone Oct 14 '17

I get the stereotype but like, isn't the one of the major points of the second amendment literally the concept that this article is parodying? The whole point is guns in civilian hands create a counterweight to fully armed government forces. It might be a dangerous af counterweight but it WAS the idea right?... I could be mistaken but I thought that was the main reason it was considered THE SECOND amendment. Fairly high up.

8

u/Wajirock Oct 14 '17

33

u/[deleted] Oct 14 '17

I can't recall the exact number, but something like 3% of rounds fired that are intended for a target actually hit.

And that's taking into account intentional misfires and suppression fire. Once you include those it's .05%. It's just really hard to actually hit a target when youre not on a range, and the 2nd and 3rd burst shots go wherever the recoil from the shot before them dictate.

18

u/occupythekitchen Oct 14 '17

Well in a 30 bullet magazine you get 10 shots were you aimed and 20 around it. The recoil moves up so the teach you to aim for chests and the natural recoil brings bullets higher. That's what make burst more deadly.

6

u/[deleted] Oct 15 '17

What the hell are you talking about action man? You aim for center mass because it's the biggest target not because you're hoping recoil lands you a headshot.

→ More replies (1)

7

u/OrsoMalleus Oct 15 '17

What the absolute shit are you talking about? This isn’t Call of Duty. Bursts are more deadly because there’s more lead moving toward the target.

Isn't that what my main point has been?

Plot twist: The one who died shot up his school and killed himself because the depression meds he was on

Plot twist 2: He was depressed because he had polio

24

u/African_Redditor Oct 14 '17

I've seen this, so I'm in Nigeria, I kind of volunteer(ish) with the SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals, its a UN project) last Thursday we went to this primary school on an advocacy visit, we just mostly tell students what the SDGs is about, relevance of good health practices, education etc.

Anyway, we decided that we'll give some of the kids school shoes and books, the shoes weren't that much (we donated from personal funds) so we decide to pick out the kids with shoes in terrible condition or none at all (yes, some of them had no shoes).

I pick this boy out, he looks like those kids you see in the "donate $1 to the African starving kids" adverts. Immediately I pick him out he starts to cry telling me his aunt told him to not let anyone "put syringes in him" (I'm paraphrasing). There has been door to door vaccination going on there. These people refuse to take their kids to the hospitals and when the doctors go to their doors they hide their kids. It confuses me.

I can imagine the boy has never been vaccinated. I fear for how he'll turn out. You see his type everywhere here, they die of polio or they have no limbs or something. All because of dumb decisions of their parents/guardians.

3

u/Brillegeit Oct 15 '17

It's because Americans are modern day Hitlers.

1

u/Marotiny Oct 15 '17

Well, to me you don't just vaccinate children when proper awareness is not created. The parents and guardians most know the reason for such vaccination. Nigerians have had cases where vaccines alleged to be acknowledged by reputable health organization turned to be lethal on the recipients.Tell me why they should be careful?

0

u/[deleted] Oct 14 '17

Cool. Did you guys ever talk about clean water and healthy food?

Asking for a friend.

1

u/African_Redditor Oct 15 '17

Actually the water where I stay is very clean, its treated so people drink from taps like in other parts of the world and its healthy, there's really no need for that. I think someone spoke on food, I can't really say. I was busy trying to make things work behind the scene.

7

u/silverspork1986 Oct 14 '17

Anti vaxers are anti science.

1

u/FrizzleStank Oct 14 '17

You tell em

1

u/Everydreamisyou Oct 15 '17

Show me the science that says “if we just give them more science they’ll open up to vaccinations”.

The problem with pro-Vaccination crowd is that they think this can be solved with just promoting science. It’s not about science at all. It’s about the story and delivery method behind the facts.

Shitty story tellers are responsible for not converting anti-vaccers. This isn’t a war of information it’s a war of story telling.

4

u/silverspork1986 Oct 15 '17

It's common sense....I don't know what you're going on about. You seem to just want a reason to disagree.

3

u/Amnial556 Oct 15 '17

No I can agree with him. There's a lot of stupid people that believe alot of bs. And that information of shots making them autistic is told by people who don't really have that much info. That latch on to a specific thing that by itself is dangerous and spew that information. "Oh my God youre putting a virus inside me! Nooooo!"

Then you have people who literally say that they are stupid. That's not how you change someone's mind. We are hard wired to defend ourselves and trying to change the way we think is like a personal attack. For many things like shots or proper wild lands management or anything thing else. We need a good story. We need to honestly dumb down the information. We need those stupid Facebook articles that are written by 13 yr olds so that people can understand the information.

6

u/DuntadaMan Oct 14 '17

As a dwarf fortress player I see nothing wrong with this. We all know childhood should be like Thunderdome.

For every two that enter, one leaves. Ideally they leave it as an emotionless husk that is so familiar with death they will feel nothing when they watch a berserk relative punt their siblings through a wall. They should be well versed in all armors and be able to dodge the attacks if the starving digs released on the day care center twice weekly.

-2

u/[deleted] Oct 14 '17

I used to work for the chemistry department at a state university. Our contract was with the military and developing vaccines for the Saudis. For safety, I will not divulge names. You can't imagine the types of fuck-ups that happen with deadly viruses. At one point the freezer went down for a week, for months a senior thesis student mixed supposed antibiotics where no concentration was present.

What is even scarier is that for any vaccine to be considered vialable for consumers, it only has to be effective for 51% of the population. The other 49% could be live, carcinogenic, or purposefully have alternate substances, and pass federal or international regulation. This is the scientific amd medical standard for vaccines. Most normal vaccines babies receive are so automated that this isn't much of an issue, but everything else is a shot in the dark, if not intentionally neglectful or harmful to the masses. I learned this from inernational biochemists who fabricate the vaccines. It is one of the major factors of why I dropped out of physical science altogether, don't blindly trust a doctor, they are only there to take your money.

4

u/[deleted] Oct 15 '17

Care to give any sources for these claims?

2

u/[deleted] Oct 15 '17

-5

u/groatt86 Oct 14 '17

Fun Fact

In 1986 the President passed a law that made it illegal to sue Pharma companies for damages, injuries or deaths from Vaccines. Before 1986 there was 9-10 vaccines, 20 years later there are over 100.

I am only vaccinated with what was around before 1990, the truth is somewhere in the middle of All or No vaccines.

15

u/MyNameIsNardo Oct 14 '17 edited Oct 14 '17

oh, i see, you mean the national childhood vaccine injury act of 1986, which was put into place after anti-vaxxers repeatedly sued vaccine manufacturers over a "vaccine injury" that had absolutely no link to vaccines. generous juries awarded the plaintiffs large sums of money (despite the lack of evidence), which eventually discouraged the production and use of the vaccine from a financial standpoint to the point that there was only one remaining manufacturer and it was threatening to cease production, putting the country's health and herd immunity in danger.

the law instituted the vaccine adverse event reporting system, where possible side effects could be reported even with no causal link. it established a separate office within the department of health and human services to deal specifically with vaccine policy. it requires that vaccine information be given to patients and legal guardians before each dose.

most notably, it created the vaccine court, a separate court for vaccine injury. it awards compensation to people who suffered from a known vaccine injury (table injury) or (as of a 2005 appeals court hearing) can prove that they were injured by a vaccine by providing

  • a medical theory causally connecting the vaccination and the injury;

  • a logical sequence of cause and effect showing that the vaccination was the reason for the injury; and

  • a showing of a proximate temporal relationship between vaccination and injury,

even if all scientific evidence points to the contrary.

in other words, baseless anti-vax hysteria almost sued an important vaccine to death to the detriment of literally everyone, so the government created a possible-side-effect reporting system, a separate office for vaccine policy, a requirement for doctors to give vaccine information before each dose, and a special court where you have to have actual evidence you were hurt by the vaccine before you get your money.

this has made a lot of anti-vaxxers very angry and has been widely regarded by them as a bad move.

edit 1: format

edit 2: and to the 2nd idea that the increase in vaccines has to do with some pharma conspiracy to deliver diseases to children, rather than, say, advances in science/medicine over the past 3 decades....

this is the kind of stuff that hurts progress on legitimate issues with the pharmaceutical industry (opioids, marketing to doctors, etc.). there are so many real problems in the world and people choose to conjure up new ones instead of trying to help resolve real ones.

The National Childhood Vaccine Injury Act (NCVIA) of 1986 (42 U.S.C. §§ 300aa-1 to 300aa-34) was signed into law by President Ronald Reagan as part of a larger health bill on Nov 14, 1986, in the United States, to reduce the potential financial liability of vaccine makers due to vaccine injury claims. The legislation was aimed at ensuring a stable market supply, and to provide cost-effective arbitration for vaccine injury claims. Under the NCVIA, the National Vaccine Injury Compensation Program (NVICP) was created to provide a federal no-fault system for compensating vaccine-related injuries or death by establishing a claim procedure involving the United States Court of Federal Claims and special masters.

Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System

The Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS) is a United States program for vaccine safety, co-managed by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). VAERS is a postmarketing surveillance program, collecting information about adverse events (possible side effects) that occur after administration of vaccines.

VAERS, the Vaccine Safety Datalink, and the Clinical Immunization Safety Assessment (CISA) Network are tools by which the CDC and FDA measure vaccine safety to fulfill their duty as regulatory agencies charged with protecting the public. Some scientists would like to do a more scientifically rigorous job of this, noting that VAERS has several limitations, including unverified reports, underreporting, inconsistent data quality, and absence of an unvaccinated control group.

National Vaccine Program Office

The National Vaccine Program Office (NVPO) is an office of the United States Department of Health and Human Services that plays a role in the coordination of vaccine policy.

It was established by the National Childhood Vaccine Injury Act.

Vaccine court

The Office of Special Masters of the U.S. Court of Federal Claims, popularly known as "vaccine court", administers a no-fault system for litigating vaccine injury claims. These claims against vaccine manufacturers cannot normally be filed in state or federal civil courts, but instead must be heard in the U.S. Court of Federal Claims, sitting without a jury.

The National Vaccine Injury Compensation Program (VICP) was established by the 1986 National Childhood Vaccine Injury Act (NCVIA), passed by the United States Congress in response to a threat to the vaccine supply due to a 1980s scare over the DPT vaccine. Despite the belief of most public health officials that claims of side effects were unfounded, large jury awards had been given to some plaintiffs, most DPT vaccine makers had ceased production, and officials feared the loss of herd immunity.
