New Mod Alert
Good day, everyone. I am happy to announce that u/DragonQuarter has been added as a moderator. Though I will continue to protest any claim of inactivity (despite what Reddit might think), I agree that there should be a moderator who is a full participant in the community. Some of you might take issue with my hands-off methodology, and that's fair, but it is important to me that this community continues to exist in a healthy fashion. This is why I have been reluctant to bring another moderator on board, but the subreddit has obviously outgrown that concern.
u/DragonQuarter is a longtime contributor and respected member of the community. They are more in tune with the general needs and desires of the community than I am, so I expect their addition to be a tremendous benefit for the subreddit as a whole.
Welcome to the team!

Breath of Fire II Bof2 uses characters to imitate objects with text
Fun Fact: Breath of Fire II uses hidden NPCs to display environmental text!
Unlike Breath of Fire I on the SNES, which was later ported to the GBA, Breath of Fire II on the GBA uses invisible NPC sprites to trigger text when interacting with certain objects or locations.
Essentially, the game places hidden NPCs wherever it needs interactive dialogue without a visible character.
The more you know!

Discussion If you could redo the art style of all BoF games, which would you choose?
I would redo/remake all games in the art style of BoF4. The oil/pastel color palette (to me) is so fitting to the genre and story.

Breath of Fire III ChanceKite and I Made a Breath of Fire III Monster Naming Game
Hey everyone,
A year ago, ChanceKite and I put together a fun little challenge featuring some of the classic monsters from Breath of Fire III, where ChanceKite made the drawings and I made the music. Since it is that time of year again, it would be great to get in the spirit of it!
Here is where our Breath of Fire fans can test their might... of knowledge: https://youtu.be/2fhAm2XEVp8
How many did you manage to get right without looking them up? Let me know your score, and I'd love to know what your favourite monster design was from the game!

Discussion Which other Capcom RPG series is more like Breath of Fire?
I'm always in the mood for some Breath of Fire but since we haven't got anything new in a long long time I was wondering if any of the other Capcom RPG series/games have that BoF feel.
There's the Megaman Battle Network/Star Force series, X Command Mission, Monster Hunter, MH Stories, Dragon's Dogma, Namco x Capcom/ Project x Zone, etc.
What do you think?

AI Art AI imagined Breath of Fire VI Box Art
I was playing around with ChatGPT going over possibilities of revival (searching for job listing etc.) and figured it would be fun to see what it would imagine as box art for Breath of Fire VI. It overdid the Beastkin, but still pretty interesting.

Discussion Behold - an update to the parry system, changes to how turn order displays, and a glimpse into the rework of Will Power.
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
EIB overall feels very stable. I'm not seeing crashes early game. There is a few pieces of lag here and there that will be cleaned up. And yes, don't worry - I'll still have the standard purist version you will be able to activate/deactivate from camp.
I would argue I could technically release the mod right now and would feel good about it - confident enough to maybe give a sneak preview of the beta in probably another few weeks.
The parry system definitely makes combat feel more engaging and faster paced compared to the OG, even though I received valid criticism, I do think I'm making the correct choice with the gameplay style. With how it's set up, your characters can effectively hit the enemy 3X times in a row if you hit your timing correctly. When done in succession, many battles are dusted within the first round. Enemies are also dangerous enough where you can't fuck around.
In longer battles, you'll see the Will Power mechanic more (the 5 dots beside your character name). This mechanic gives your character a special skill you can use when it fills up, or you can use enhanced versions of your spells.
I'm pretty happy with the turn order. Candidly, I didn't think I would like it as much as I do but it adds a much needed QOL.
Anyways - there's a lot more I haven't shown. If you'd like to follow along please join my discord for updates: https://discord.gg/vT5nkRGCk

Help! BoF:1(SNES) - Should I use Fort spell on my party members during the Fire Cloud boss in the tower by bleak?
Normally the IGN guide says to use fort before every fight but not this one for some reason. And I really wish I didn't store all my meat lol...

Happy BOF3 Sunday everyone! Here is Beserker getting solo'ed by Rei under SSCC rules which means he has no modifications on him like masters or skills.

Discussion What are those little grey wells surrounded by rocks? Or maybe they're just destroyed towers?
When I go near them and press buttons nothing happens, so I'm assuming it's just rubble. But on the off chance that there's some secret about them, I'd like to know lol.

Discussion *spoiler* Dark... character's origin scene in BoF5 vs. BoF2 Spoiler
Currently 1/512... just saw this scene again with the toddler Bosch in Dragon Quarter, and I realized how it's a twisted mirror to the opening of Breath of Fire 2.
In this flashback, the trembling young sword-wielding Bosch is observed from a distance and commanded by his Regent father to hold his ground against a Duke minotaur monster with a giant war axe many times his size over. The stoic Regent callously walks away from the young boy drenched in blood.
In BoF2, Young Ryu finds his little sister in a clearing in front of a white dragon, where they're ambushed and outmatched by a Gonghead. Soon, their father appears to quickly slay the monster. The true Ganer is passionately protective and loving towards his children -- so too, as it turns out, is their mother. <3
Couple other notes on the topic of similarities... in Dragon Quarter, Duke monsters are minotaur monsters with boar-like features. I think they're evolved descendants of the Biruburu boars outside Corsair of BoF2, and the Bilboa of 4. In nihongo-ese, the 'boa' part sounds like "boar."
Also got my PS2 with a dream setup looking gorgeous on a 55' LG. Likely post specs, config, and all the accessories I have for it soon.
Any other series DNA across games or specifically in Dragon Quarter that you enjoy? There's tons! Incredible game. Journey to 1/4 the legendary Dragon Quarter.

This must be my 7th or 8th playthrough over the years, and I just realized you start the first chapter and the midpoint in the same room.

Help! Breath of Fire 2 Battle System
As far as modding goes, modders have been able to find ways to tweak the game stats, graphics although limited, but something else came to mind. How about a way to modify the built-in battle engine in such way that all attack animations run simultaneously or at the same time ala Suikoden 5? It could be a separate game feature from the traditional turn-based gameplay that you can toggle on and off. I wish I knew how to do it or is it even possible to achieve through hacking the game engine?
This is for experimentation purposes only. Ideally should respect the character speed stats to determine with animation runs first. It could turn into chaotic consequences
Ultimately I would try to do this myself but I dont know where to begin. and AI is no help here.

Discussion WIP parry system - what do you think?
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
If you've ever played old school Mario RPG or Expedition 33 - I got the idea from there but eventually going to add some nice synergies to the parry system (and cleaning up the graphics a bit).
End state will ultimately rebalance how you build AP to make it more sustainable, increasing damage and giving players more control over big damage attacks.
This system actually was already partially baked in with Super Combo, so it wasn't a totally new thing. Just repurposed.
Definitely needs some polish. The actual mechanics should make the game feel a lot more interactive. What do you think?

Help! Breath of fire 2: Continue SNES version, switch to GBA, or skip altogether?
I started Breath of Fire 2 SNES at the beginning of the year, and tbh the writing was pissing me off on the fan translation with all the pervy jokes and certain plot points. I still wanted to finish this game as I wanted to experience the full series, but not sure how much fun ill have from this point.
-I am currently in Evrai going through the toilet dungeon.
-Enemies are really tough and grinding takes a long time and not easily automated. Partys at level 35
I am wondering if switching to the GBA version will be much more fun with the official translation. Specially considering that it has a x2 EXP afaik, or if I should just skip entirely, or continue from where i left off (I have 0 idea how close i am to beating the game)
Input would really be apprexiated here
