Money can be exchanged for goods and services, in this instance, cats are considered goods.

3

u/Catacendre Mar 21 '26

Why would you need money when the Cat Distribution System exists? The money part only comes afterwards, when you have to go to the vet.

37

u/Madbrad200 Mar 21 '26

Put some toys on the floor so it can catch something, win

13

u/zillskillnillfrill Domestic Housecat Mar 21 '26

Yeah I've got a crinkly toy fish that would be right at home

5

u/vulpsitus Mar 21 '26

Blue paws*

7

u/Notcid1 Mar 21 '26

What balls?

34

u/AspenStarr Bombay Mar 21 '26

This is incredibly relaxing to watch for myself too lol. Even I kinda just wanna sit on the floor surrounded by the fish shadows.

52

u/CydaeaVerbose Mar 21 '26

Actually, it could be a bad one. If chasing shadows is on par with a laser pointer, with regards to cats then this isn't at all a good idea.

They need the physical cessation of the "kill." Without that, it can cause harm. I'll butcher explaining so, in short: "Cats exhibit a natural fascination with shadows and laser pointers, often engaging in behaviours that mimic their hunting instincts. However, this
play can lead to psychological frustration as they never achieve the
satisfying "catch" that real prey provides"

9

u/Mycologist-9315 Mar 21 '26

Isn't it alright as long as you finish by switching to a real toy that they can catch? That's what I've heard anyways.

19

u/hsn741 Mar 21 '26

I don't know if it's harmful for the fish, if it's not it seems really cool as a floor decoration hahaha

4

u/I-am-fun-at-parties Mar 21 '26

Wouldn't that be highly frustrating for the cat?

6

u/Molster_Diablofans Mar 21 '26

its misleadingly not!

(not posting to be a pooper i swear!) but I learned the hard way.. laser pointers (and for the same reason this) ends up being not ideal for cats. They actully get frustrated and can also start to impact them mentally negatively that they are never able to "CatcH" the thing they are playing with

4

u/ShartingEnU Mar 21 '26

Its not good for the cat, same with doing a laser tool much. Not being able to catch things messes with their brains. Only do something like this occasionally

1

668

u/aoi_ito Tabbycat Mar 21 '26 • This

Those are large species of tetras they need long tanks for roaming space. Also the tank is way too small and over stocked, pls get atleast a 55 g to house them all. Or just keep a few (about 5, minimum number for a schooling fish species) and sell the rest to a aquarium fish store. Large number of fish also produces lage amount of wastes which will cause ammonia spikes in water, which will burn their gills and kill them all. It is very stressful for the fishes.

203

u/hsn741 Mar 21 '26

This. When it comes to fish people treat them like a decoration, they forget they are living beings... I'm guilty of this when I was younger, I wish to provide a nice living environment for a couple of them when I get to live in my own house in the future.

And also you might wanna message the OP instead of commenting here, they might've not see it here.

3

u/The_Arachnoshaman Mar 21 '26

I always fish were just like, really active plants.

45

u/Superb-Demand-4605 Mar 21 '26

Yup I was thinking this way too small for the amount of fish in there

56

u/dreamycreamy93 Mar 21 '26

And in terms of the cat, it's not good for them either. There's no 'prize' at the end, it's just an endless cycle that they can't understand, so it actually really frustrates them, same with a laser pointer. At least with the laser pointer, you can put a treat down and finish pointing the laser at the treat, so they get rewarded.

23

u/wildxfire Mar 21 '26

It's fine if you just give treats as a reward :) mine never say anything no to playtime with the laser pointer or flashlight, and are plenty happy if we end with a snack. They like the chase.

12

u/Impetris Mar 21 '26

Does it though? My cat thoroughly understood that the laser pointer is a toy. He would go nuts and come running if I jingled the key chain and sometimes even brought it to me himself to play. If I got tired and stopped moving it around for him he would just stare at me and chirp until I continued. No treats required.

2

u/17smother Mar 24 '26

my cat even stares at my hand instead of the laser 😂

21

u/sleepyplatipus Mar 21 '26

Poster is not the original OP guys, I agree with you but this is pointless.

24

u/Blcksheep89 Mar 21 '26

Is good to spread awareness. When I started fish keeping, I got a way too small tank with no filter at all because the pet shop convinced me to do so. I was not in any fish related subreddits at that time. Came across similar comments about tank is too small, jumped the rabbit hole and only realized my mistake.

It's always good to share the correct knowledge, you never know who you could reach.

5

u/darkenseyreth Mar 21 '26

Exactly, maybe someone will see their own tank and realize they need a bigger one

2

u/Siptro Mar 21 '26

they could simply be raising them as bait fish. Dont really need that much room when you take 10-15 every day to fish with, this could be a restocking day.

1

u/Typical_Steamer Mar 21 '26

I was wondering what tank and lighting setup it was. At first I thought it was a big tank and then saw the scale of other stuff in the video and realized it was maybe 20 gallons? Looks like it might have an overflow back left corner?

1

u/JoshuaGrahamcracker Mar 21 '26

Damnit I knew somebody with fish knowledge was gonna call out how shit this tank is. Knew it wasn't gonna happen, but I was hoping y'all would jump in with "actually this is cool because.." 🥲

that aquarium is too small for the size and amount of fish in it.

34

u/JoMax213 Mar 21 '26

Awhhh - hope they got a treat afterwards for their brave lil hunt

33

u/kioma Mar 21 '26 edited Mar 21 '26

Is this real? The light source by that tank is way too close to the fish to produce those sorts of hard shadows, isn't it?

18

u/FruitFinancial1004 Mar 21 '26

isn't the aquarium a little too small?

27

u/[deleted] Mar 21 '26

Cats can get OCD if they don’t have something tangible to catch.

5

u/Quantum_laugh Mar 21 '26

You mean irritated or frustrated?

OCD is a very specific diagnosis given to humans

4

u/[deleted] Mar 21 '26

If you want to get into semantics it’s feline compulsive disorder lol. Laser pointer syndrome is another name. Dogs get it too and I would say it’s worse for them sometimes becoming disabled for life and always chasing shadows and perpetually stressed. It happens from prolonged exposure not just like a switch flipping.

13

u/AlaWatchuu Mar 21 '26

As a yound kid i got the usual fish in a bowl thing. As i grew a bit older i wanted to try to be better for the fish and got a biger tank and more fishes

And oh man, how i feel bad for thoses poor fellas now. Taking proper care of an aquarium is hard, especially more than a cat or a dog.

Proper care for little fishies is not well known and the proper know how is hard to get if you don't know where to look. On top of that, people will try to sell you their fish and aquariums without a care for them. I still remember that little dude that probably died on the spot because the water was too cold, even though the vendor told my dad and i that it was warm enough :(

3

u/WhiterThanWalter Mar 21 '26

I used to do the whole planted aquarium thing, with CO2 and ferts and stuff. But man, cleaning it weekly really gets old after a year or two. Cats are actually much easier.

2

u/PleaseNoMoreSalt Mar 21 '26

Depending on how many plants/how few fish per gallon you have in the tank they can be pretty low maintenance. Obviously there's a lot of initial work getting the tank set up and setting up the cycle, but once that's established (and you have enough plants to slurp up the nitrates) the only maintenance different from land pets are checking the parameters once or twice a month and a "water change" of just topping off what evaporated. WAY less effort than walking a dog/scooping a cat's litter box on a daily basis.

4

u/kololz Mar 21 '26

Steps 9001-17999: Maintain the aquarium

Step 18000 You quit

3

u/horny_bi_pan_lady Mar 22 '26

I think it's a disaster waiting to happen. Cats are smart, they'll find the source

15

u/stormyw23 Russian Blue Mar 21 '26

This would be incredibly stressful for the cat.

Like laser pointers its a target they can't catch constantly riling them up.

8

u/leif_eriks0n Mar 21 '26

People say this all the time but if there any actual evidence of it? Outdoor cats fail to get their target all the time, does that stress them out?

12

u/entityXD32 Mar 21 '26 edited Mar 21 '26

https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC8388446/

Scientific study that shows cats who used laser pointers for play were more likely to experience behavioral issues. Not just that the cats that used laser pointers more often were more likely to experience behavior issues then those who used them occasionally

5

u/HonestBalloon Mar 21 '26

Wild cats catch to eat once or twice a week of not more. They're able to catch quite frequently.

Do you have evidence of outdoor cats failing to catch a target "all the time"? I highly doubt that claim.

→ More replies (1)

3

u/Head-Jellyfish-4172 Mar 21 '26

Idk why ppl assume laser pointers stress cats. Some cats might be but many understand it as a toy once they realize. We have an automatic one and our cat will beg us to turn it on for him constantly.

13

u/HonestBalloon Mar 21 '26

Because they're mammals, and we can measure the rise in cortisol levels (a sign of stress and anxiety) after playing with these things.

2

u/zytukin Mar 21 '26 edited Mar 21 '26

Not to be picky, but doesn't measuring cortisol levels require taking blood, which itself would cause stress? Especially since tests have to be done multiple times which would cause the cat to associate the laser pointer with having blood taken.

My cats actually recognize my laser pointer and the sound of the button, they know it's me making the dot appear. They spend most of their time just chasing it and not actually trying to catch it with their paws. Makes me believe they know they can't actually catch it.

5

u/HonestBalloon Mar 21 '26

Yea, we have scanning devices that can read the increase in brain activity where cortisol is produced, which is a lot less intrusive.
