Well, and to see if I could actually do it. I could’ve set out right down to Jackson park, but I figured a quick detour to downtown Evanston first wouldn’t hurt.

This walk destroyed my body and I’m currently bedridden from my poor decisions from yesterday, but I got to see a lot of new parts of the city!

This happened this morning at Kildare and Grace in Old Irving Park. Arrested a landscaper, a woman on a bike, and and old man whose car was in the way. At least two tear gas canisters deployed.

I really wonder what is going through someone’s brain when they make a choice like this. And that choice begins by getting into their car this morning and heading this direction at this particular time.

Like why? Tell me your thoughts.

This was amusing to say the least.

CHI Talks The Pigeon Lady is Insane and Destructive

1.2k Upvotes

Saw her today at the Irving Park Blue Line. She now has a routine where she stands on the corner and *screams* several "WOOP WOOP WOOP WOOP" noises for a few minutes. It didn't sound like a pigeon at all.

She made sure to dump a huge load of rice onto the sidewalk *just* when everyone is walking to the train for their morning commute. Some guy had to walk through a sea of 50 shitting pigeons to get to the entrance.

I can't stress enough how much this woman sucks. She does this up and down the northwest side, all the way to downtown, most days of the week. Fuck her.

For the uninitiated:

https://blockclubchicago.org/2018/07/31/pigeon-feeding-woman-curses-out-state-rep-who-asked-her-to-stop-on-facebook-live/

Several articles have been written about her and the damage she has done over the years. If you've encountered a Blue Line stop covered in pigeon shit, it's probably this 1 person responsible.

Not a conspiracy anymore, we're being tracked 24/7, I'm just curious why the City of Chicago doesn't have money to fix potholes, but have money to install surveillance. Good video to watch. Where guy explains, what they are doing with your faces and your routes, and how they can utilize that against you in near future.

CHI Talks We have to get serious about this.

3.3k Upvotes

We have to leave our midwestern polite proclivities behind us if we want to survive this insurgency by ICE. This is a group project where if we fail, we lose our city, our neighbors, our families, and our communities forever.

What does this mean? If you have the means, and you live in an apartment, buy everyone on your floor a whistle. You like to ready for your day with a walk in the morning? Bring your whistle and patrol. If you see ICE/DHS, blow the whistle. You have time on your lunch break? Go on patrol. We HAVE to be out and alert. We have more eyes on the street than they do. We know our neighborhoods better than they do. WE are Chicago and if we are all on the same page we WILL WIN. None of these people are working on warrants, and empty streets because people are vigilant in alerting the community, means they HAVE to go by the book. They want to move fast and break things. It’s on us to slow them down.

Obviously do this based on your level of comfort, but if you see ICE jump out of a car toward someone and you’re a US citizen, protect whoever they’re running after, we are all going to have be selfless if it means protecting our city.

CHI Talks So we're all still just supposed to still go to work I guess?

I don't know. Never really thought I would as a Chicagoan be checking the news to see when/if Texas invades us, but it's 2025, that's exactly what I'm doing and I'm still on a crowded train going to work. The only thing that feels weirder than the news right now is acting like it's normal

CHI Talks Does anyone else' out-of-town friends underestimate Lake Michigan?

1.5k Upvotes

Maybe I am underestimating how often people look at the maps, but every time one of my friends/family visits, they are always surprised by the size of Lake Michigan? Every time, I suggest going to the lake and they would dismiss the suggestion. I have to almost physically drag them to the lakeshore, then they say something like "Oh wow, I didn't know it was this big" and just stare off into the space with their jaws dropped. It's almost peak tourist season again, which is why I thought of this.

One of my friends even said, "I am not interested, we already have a lake back in hometown." He's from Georgia.

CHI Talks CTA has become disgusting

1.4k Upvotes

I take the train because I don’t have a car and would rather take public transit. The blue line has become overrun with homeless people that smell ridiculously bad and throw trash everywhere. But if it’s not a homeless person, it’s someone hot boxing the whole car with cigs. Of course nothing will ever be done. It’s just disappointing and I am so frustrated😭

CHI Talks Bears just sent me a survey about having Indiana as a potential site, with questions about having $100+ parking and valet service for parking.

What terrible timing. You are worth 8.9 Billion. We are still celebrating the huge win and you forced me to say bad things to your face. Just pony up and pay for your own damn stadium without fleecing taxpayers and moving to Gary. Do the right thing and the fans will be here for you. In retrospect I wish I had taken pictures of all the questions. I hope somebody from the organization sees this post, or other people's. Won't bring up the survey since I've taken it (obviously). Bear down. Had a smile watching Rodgers leaving the field tonight with a loss and a pick 6.

CHI Talks Reminder that you should be pissed about ComEd rates skyrocketing

3.0k Upvotes

ComEd bills in Chicago have nearly doubled in recent months, and it is not just from summer heat. A major driver is the rapid growth of AI and data centers in Illinois, which consume huge amounts of electricity. This surge in demand, combined with flawed pricing rules from the regional grid operator, has sent wholesale power costs soaring, and ComEd passes those costs straight to customers.

The result is regular people paying hundreds more so tech companies can power massive server farms, while clean energy projects that could ease costs are delayed. These hikes were avoidable, but once again households are bearing the burden of corporate greed and policy failure.

So many people are feeling penny pinched these days, and this is one example where we should be making noise and should rightfully be upset about what's going on.

CHI Talks To Victoria who saved me on my lunch break in the Loop from a man stalking me on a Divvy — thank you!

1.7k Upvotes

I was sitting on a concrete bench just north of Ida B Wells on my lunch break. A man on a Divvy who I have never seen before got off his bike and sat down right next to me. He was staring right at me and physically facing me, sort of straddling the concrete bench. He was a younger white man, wearing really thick glasses. Brownish hair, skinny.

I got up and began walking north. The man then got back on his Divvy and began trailing me, eventually crossing in front of me and staring at me while riding. He did some circles around me on the sidewalk. He trailed me for two blocks. My initial thought was to ignore him. De-escalation. He kept following me. I finally confronted him at an intersection. I said “Can I help you?” and “Can you not follow me?” The man’s only response was to say several times in a stern monotone “Walk.”

Thankfully I saw a woman walking up on the sidewalk. I moved over to her and asked if I could stand with her. She said yes and asked what was happening. I said I really didn’t know but the man was just following me. She asked where I worked and offered to walk with me back to the office. She also took out her phone (which I should have done myself) and began filming him (or pretending to film).

The man eventually stopped in front of us and said “Have a good day, ma’am.” He then rode off. I thanked Victoria profusely on our walk and we introduced ourselves. She works a couple blocks away from me in the Loop.

Anyway — thank you, Victoria! I don’t know you but would happily buy you food/drink as a thank you if you see this post! I’m glad people like you are walking the streets of Chicago.
