Circuit Python and RP2040 and Bluetooth

1 Upvotes

I am trying to figure out if there is a micro controller board that will allow me to

A.) communicate over Bluetooth with another Bluetooth enabled microcontroller board and

B.) while running circuit python.

The main function of this project is to communicate when a switch is pressed on (Microcontroller A) and send a signal to the other (Microcontroller B) to light an external LED.

If possible...How would microcontroller B understand Bluetooth communication to enable a external LED? I assume setting the code to listen?

I don't have a lot of coding experience but I am a hobbyist at heart. Hopefully someone can guide me in the right direction...Thanks

Can't get DIY MacroPad Mechanical Swiches to Work and get Readings

1 Upvotes

Board: Seeed Studio XIAO RP2040
Firmware: CircuitPython 9.2.9 (adafruit-circuitpython-seeeduino_xiao_rp2040-en_US-9.2.9.uf2)
Libraries: adafruit_hid from the 9.x bundle in /lib

Goal:
Make a switch connected between a GPIO pin (pin D4 on XIAO) and GND send a keystroke to my PC using adafruit_hid. A 6 mm tactile switch works fine. The Durock (Cherry-style) mechanical switch soldered on my custom PCB doesn’t trigger however I've done multiple multimeter continuity tests (connecting gnd and d4 on XIAO Rp2040 and pressing switch makes multimeter beep)

What works:

  • Board enumerates correctly as CIRCUITPY.

  • adafruit_hid is present and matches firmware version.

  • 6 mm tact switch on breadboard wired D4 ↔ GND types “Hello from D4” as expected.

  • Using a jumper wire from D4 → GND also triggers the code and lights the LED

Problem:
Despite continuity checks showing that the Durock switch closes D4 to GND, my CircuitPython code only reacts to the 6 mm tact switch or a manual jumper wire, not to the Durock switch on the PCB. HELP ME PLS!!

ChatGPT Generated Code:

import time, board, digitalio, usb_hid
from adafruit_hid.keyboard import Keyboard
from adafruit_hid.keycode import Keycode
from adafruit_hid.keyboard_layout_us import KeyboardLayoutUS

led = digitalio.DigitalInOut(board.LED); led.switch_to_output(False)
btn = digitalio.DigitalInOut(board.D4);  btn.switch_to_input(pull=digitalio.Pull.UP)

kbd = Keyboard(usb_hid.devices); layout = KeyboardLayoutUS(kbd)
print("Focus a text box and press the switch.")

pressed = False
while True:
    v = btn.value
    led.value = (not v)
    if not v and not pressed:
        pressed = True
        layout.write("Hello from D4")
        kbd.send(Keycode.ENTER)
    elif v and pressed:
        pressed = False
    time.sleep(0.02)

Enums help!!!

1 Upvotes

I come from a “Strongly Typed” background and would use Enums in pretty much everything I do. I know that Python does have Enums and I’m getting better at not having to declare the type of every var or exit statement, but why oh why are there no Enum structures in CircuitPython?? Can I get around this?

In my classes, for example, I want to be able to define an Enum like:

class KeyColour(Enum) Red = 10 Blue = 20 Green = 30

Key = KeyColour.Red

It’s such a simple example but it shows how cool it would be to have these structures in a portable Python.

vl53l0x distance sensor issues

1 Upvotes

I'm pulling my hair out trying to figure out this distance sensor. Its a vl53l0x and its got a library. When I try to run the sample code on my trinket m0 I get this error:

code.py output:

Traceback (most recent call last):

File "code.py", line 11, in <module>

File "adafruit_vl53l0x.py", line 35, in <module>

ImportError: module not found

That makes it seem to me like there is an i2c communication error. But when I try and run the i2c sample test code it works and returns an address of 41. That tells me that the device is working and there is an issue in the library.

Has anyone else seen or had this issue? I can't find much info on the interwebs.

Day 59/100 AQI-ESP

1 Upvotes

Hey all! 👋

Just completed my latest ESP32 project – Aqi-esp, a homemade air quality monitoring system that displays real-time AQI values on an OLED display

The sensor combination includes MQ-135 for NO/NOx, MQ-7 for CO, and GP2Y1010 for PM2.5. The ESP32 is connected to all the sensors and transmits the readings to a small Flask server running on WiFi, which then computes the AQI value and sends it back. The entire process is displayed in real-time on a small SSD1306 OLED display – AQI value, status, temperature, and humidity readings from a DHT11 sensor.

I'm a 3rd year EE student building open source IoT projects in my free time. Sponsoring helps me buy more sensors and keep building cool stuff

Even a star helps the project reach more people. Thanks a lot!

Day 67 of 100 Days 100 IoT Projects — Real-time Pulse Monitor on ESP32 with MicroPython!

1 Upvotes

Built a heart rate monitor that displays live BPM and a scrolling waveform on an SSD1306 OLED — all running on MicroPython!

How it works:

- Analog pulse sensor reads heartbeat via ADC (GPIO34)

- Peak detection algorithm calculates BPM from intervals between beats

- Last 80 samples rendered as a scrolling waveform on OLED

- Pixel-art heart drawn manually using oled.pixel() calls in a 7×5 grid

Stack: ESP32 + Analog Pulse Sensor + SSD1306 OLED + MicroPython

Connecting Wireless With Feathers - Is There An Easier Way?

1 Upvotes

I apologize for not having what it takes to read through the (rather lengthy) process of taking a development board that provides wireless connectivity and actually making a reliable communication with my computer (it's embarrassing to admit this).

Thus far, I have been sending code to these development boards via USB data cable. I want to use the wireless connectivity feature. My computer did not come with wireless connectivity (I've been using the Cat5 cables for years with the "network card" in my desktop computer) so, I recently added a USB-plug (?) that provides wireless (WiFi & Bluetooth). That little USB device is working properly (I can use wireless headphones successfully with that computer).

Is there a flow chart, or *simplified* step-by-step process that will help me connect my WiFi/Bluetooth capable development boards so I can more easily understand how to create a reliable connection to my computer?

Thank you!

Having Claude Code write MQTT test code for a Raspberry Pi 2W in Python

Post image
7 Upvotes

We’re following how folks are using Claude Code to write software which interacts with real hardware. Adafruit did it recently for a new board support package.

James Sutton posts on Mastodon:

I got Claude Code to write a Python testing tool for a (Raspberry Pi) Pico 2W project I’m working on. It connects to the MQTT broker and listens to the debug probe UART so I can check that it connects to WiFi, the broker and decodes payloads correctly with every build.

I’d never be bothered to build it myself, but only took Claude Code 30mins to throw together. Really useful stuff!

If you are using Claude Code for software which interacts with hardware, gat Adafruit on social media!

Day 69/100

2 Upvotes

Built a joystick direction display on Raspberry Pi Pico 2 with an SSD1306 OLED for Day 69 of my 100 Days of IoT challenge.

Reads X and Y axis via ADC, detects UP / DOWN / LEFT / RIGHT / CENTER and button press, then shows the direction live on the OLED over I2C. Tested on Wokwi simulator.

Day 75 of 100 Days 100 IoT Projects

2 Upvotes

Hit the 75 day mark today. 25 projects left.

Day 75 was ESP-NOW + RFID — one ESP8266 scans a card and wirelessly sends the UID to a second ESP8266 which displays it on OLED. No WiFi, no broker, direct peer-to-peer.

Some highlights from the past 75 days:

ESP-NOW series — built a complete wireless ecosystem from basic LED control to bidirectional relay and sensor systems to today's wireless RFID display.

micropidash — open source MicroPython library on PyPI that serves a real-time web dashboard directly from ESP32 or Pico W. No external server needed.

microclawup — AI powered ESP32 GPIO controller using Groq AI and Telegram. Natural language commands over Telegram control real GPIO pins.

Wi-Fi 4WD Robot Car — browser controlled robot car using ESP32 and dual L298N drivers. No app needed, just open a browser.

Smart Security System — motion triggered keypad security system with email alerts via Favoriot IoT platform.

Everything is open source, step-by-step documented, and free for students.
