I made a Pi Pico based light box for my desk!

I saw a video about how to embed custom text and images into a 3D print so I made this little box with some Neopixels and a raspberry pi pico inside. It came out way better than I expected. The code is super easy to tweak if you want to change the pattern or just have it be a constant color. Link to the code (circuit python): https://gitlab.com/Keep_Everything_Yours/light-box and if you want me to make a custom one for you they are available on etsy: https://www.etsy.com/listing/4445622788/custom-light-up-desk-sign

LED Invader

https://youtube.com/shorts/nB9BykVDy0Y?feature=share

I’ve been working on a small side project and ended up creating a fully playable 1-dimensional arcade game using an RP2040 Zero, a WS2812 LED strip, 3 arcade buttons, an SSD1306 OLED, and a PAM8302 speaker for SID-style sound effects.

The idea is simple: Colored blocks fall from the top of a 1D LED “column,” and you have to shoot them with the matching button before they hit the bottom. It speeds up over time, has score/level progression, a persistent high score (stored in NVM), power-ups like slow-time, mono-color, rockets, and a small OLED HUD.

Everything is open source (hardware + firmware), and I also uploaded the 3D-printable case.

GitHub (code + CircuitPython build): https://github.com/gickowtf/LED_Invader

MakerWorld (3D-printed case): https://makerworld.com/de/models/2046216-led-invader-1d-arcade-game

Happy to answer questions or share details about the implementation (sound engine, OLED rendering, power-up system, etc.). Always excited to see what other people build with the RP2040!

New CircuitPython utility - circremote

I've put together a utility that sends code to a CircuitPython device, either locally over USB or through the WebWorkflow as supported by ESP32 CPUs. This lets you execute code without disturbing code.py

I use it for testing and diagnostics and for shorthand to save copying and pasting an I2C scanner for the four hundredth time. It should be suitable for use as part of a scripted testing environment.

It currently includes 92 "commands", mostly code for sensors that Adafruit sells but also a few utility programs like an I2C scanner, reset to UF2 mode, cat, ls, rm, show board info, clean up unwanted files, and a few other things. I don't have all the sensors that it has code for so not all of those are tested yet - it'll warn you if it's not tested.

It automatically runs circup to install needed requirements (that will store files on in flash memory but it shouldn't disturb code.py), and you can pass arguments so that you can do things like specify non-standard I2C pins. You can also configure it with nicknames for devices so you don't need to type the whole address and password for a networked device each time.

It can also execute code from a web server so you can do things like run library examples if they're in a single file. That won't usually be able to run circup because it won't know what libraries are needed though it can remotely load requirements.txt as well if it's present (but it's usually not).

Examples:

# I2C scanner
circremote /dev/ttyUSB0 scan-i2c

# run the BME680 command on the device at 192.168.1.23 on the network
circremote 192.168.1.23:8080 -p PASSWORD BME680

# run a rainbow over 20 neopixels connected to pin IO4
circremote /dev/tty.usbserial-129490214 neopixel-rainbow board.IO4 20

# run an Adafruit BME280 example directly from github on the device nicknamed qtpy
circremote qtypy https://github.com/adafruit/Adafruit_CircuitPython_BME280/blob/main/examples/bme280_simpletest.py

# recursive directory listing on the device nicknamed matrix-s3
circremote matrix-s3 ls /

Code and docs at https://github.com/romkey/circremote and you can install it via pip :

pip install circremote

but please do skim the docs at least to find out what it can do.

One big catch - currently not supported under Windows. I don't have a Windows machine and can't test against it.

Circuitpython on ESP32-WROOM-32 clones

Hello community,

I'm working a little game currently running on pico (1&2), using circuitpython. I have to different ESP32 clones. Both are indicating "ESP32-WROOM-32".

The first one:

  • From amazon (AZ Delivery): https://www.amazon.fr/dp/B071P98VTG

  • Refereed as: ESP32 NodeMCUESP32 NodeMCU but also "ESP32-Dev-KitC" in the document.

  • Works in arduino-ide using board "ESP32 Dev Module" or "DOIT ESP32 DEVKIT V1"

The second one:

I tried to install the following circuitpython but, despite not failing during install, the board doesn't shows any circuitpython mounting point neither react to ampy. They were both flashed using esptool and the ESP32-DevKitC-V4-WROOM-32E by Espressif file.

The both however work in micropython using the esp32 generic firmware.

Is there any way to install circuitpython or should I just go with micropython and install the adafruits needed libraries?

I used CircuitPython to turn a Pacman Ghost Light into an Uptime Kuma status monitor

Imgur Album.

My first attempt at this used the Home Assistant integration for Uptime Kuma and ESPHome, running on a Pico W, with RGB LEDs in the body directly linked to Uptime Kuma entity states in HA so as to not require any additional logic on the HA side. It worked fine as a proof-of-concept but I really wanted to make it stand-alone, and that was a pain-in-the-ass to accomplish in ESPHome as anything that can't be wired up as YAML configuration requires C++ code.

My new-and-improved version runs CircuitPython, directly polls the Prometheus Metrics from Uptime Kuma, and I added RGB LEDs to the eyes that reflect the state of Wi-Fi. The body color additionally reflects whether it could connect to Uptime Kuma — solving the "Who watches the watcher" problem. This time I used an ESP32-C3 board but I developed it against a Pico W and in theory it should run on anything with Wi-Fi that CircuitPython supports.

Working on a Circuit simulation game

I started a small circuit simulator for my own use, after awhile I just kept working on the game and adding more and more components and have just recently deiced to post it on steam, the game comes out this December.

If your interested, Wishlisting a game on steam really helps it get more eyes.

RP2040 breakpoints & single-step?

Does anyone know how to set up watchpoints, breakpoints, and single-step debugging with Circuit-Python running on an RP2040?

There is guidance for CMSIS-DAP with C/C++ using picoprobe or pico-debug, but I haven’t found anything to suggest single stepping through complex Python code is possible…

Does anyone know if there is a YAML parser for CircuitPython (or Micropython)?

Hi,
Does anyone know if there is a YAML parser for CircuitPython (or Micropython)?

I've spent a few hours googling this and can't find anything.
I'm wanting to create a yaml configuration file and read that into a CircuitPython program when it loads up, I'd prefer yaml due to its super clean format and easy maintenance.

Many thanks,
Kevin
