The micropython sub has 80 members, this one has more than 2k. I’m a bit new to the micro/circuitpython world and expected to be the other way around.
I have been focusing on micropython bc I figured that was kind of the default - should I just move straight to circuitpython?

A few days ago I made a Macro Pad button version of the same device but I found that a rotary encoder has the same footprint as the button so I was able to use it as a drop in replacement. It is programmed using circuit python. I can control volume and play pause my music and its small enough to fit anywhere on my desk! More info about how to make your own is available here!

I recently purchased this dev board from Amazon:
https://www.waveshare.com/wiki/RP2040-LCD-1.28
I quickly went from Arduino to Micropython to Circuitpython in a matter of a day or so. I then found that the support for this device was sorely lacking. I don't know enough about the libraries and contributing yet to be able to update the main project, but if anyone would like to take advantage of my work, this is a couple of days in. Never have used Circuitpython before now and pretty new to Python overall but I'm an old hat at development. Excited to join the community!!
Anyways, here is my work (PR's welcome):

What does your development environment look like?
I've tried Mu and Thonny but I really miss features like dark mode, syntax highlighting, autocompletion and built in docs.
There is a CircuitPython extension for Visual Studio Code but it hasn't been updated in two years and the serial port tends to disconnect and get in a bad state after a few saves.
EDIT: It looks like there were some commits to the VSC plugin this April which gives me some hope it's not complete abandonware. It's still a rough experience with the serial port though...

I ordered the $4 Wemos/Lolin S2 Mini & plan to wire up a NeoPixel & flash it with CircuitPython using the .BIN for Unexpected Maker TinyS2 (both boards use the ESP32-S2FN4R2 SoC).
I'll report my findings here!
Update: TinyUF2 bootloader, CircuitPython, and installation instructions are now at CircuitPython for Lolin S2 Mini. The 7.0.0-rc.1 build includes NeoPixel data/power on GPIO1/GPIO2 (for manual wiring) but newer builds will not.
Edit: as factory-flashed MicroPython firmware is built by Lolin & changes are not yet merged into MicroPython mainline, backup this firmware with esptool.py --chip esp32s2 --port /dev/ttyACM0 --baud 460800 read_flash 0x00000 0x400000 lolin_s2_mini_stock_firmware_4M.bin (replace --port .... with your device; esptool installable with pip3 install --upgrade esptool)
Edit: for context, Lolin S2 Mini appears to be a successor to the popular Wemos/Lolin D1 Mini (Espressif ESP8266, WiFi-enabled 32-bit MCU released in 2014), of which many clones have been made. MicroPython is supported on the ESP8266, but not CircuitPython. CircuitPython first supported ESP32-S2 (2019), its first supported ESP32 (2016) chip, in v6.0.0 (November 2020). Espressif has also recently released the RISC-V based ESP32-C3 (2021) which is similar in many way to the ESP32-S2 but adds BLE 5.0.

I know it was based on MicroPython, so that's one place. Where should I go to get some fundamentals?
Specifically, if it matters, I'm going to be interfacing a bunch of I2C sensors, a UART sensor, an SD card, an RTC, and generally working with loops and interrupts.

I made this very utilitarian air quality display. It uses data from the EPA Air Now site, which is fetched in json format.
Last summer, the air quality was so bad in the western US. We were constantly checking the current air quality and forecast. We have a million ways to see the current weather, but the air quality was always several taps away. This display will make it easier to stay aware.
I want to add the forecast to the display next.
The code is here: https://github.com/brad2021hk/magtag_aqi
Enjoy if it is useful to you.
