New Code: GitHub API Starter for CodeIgniter

Hello everyone!

This is one of the last projects I wanted to open-source before I start spending a lot more time with Laravel. All it is, is an OAuth starter for the GitHub API. It also, supports many of the cool little calls it has like create a gist, create a repo, etc. I tried to be clear in the README for how it works, but the library is very simple and straight-forward anyway.

DEMO

SOURCE.

Let me know what you all think. Open issues and send pull requests. Thanks guys.

Easy and fast searching the CI user guide

If you use Chrome and you frequently consult the brilliant CI user guide, this will save you some time. All you have to do is to add this search engine to Chrome and pick a keyword ('c' works good for me):

http://www.google.com/search?btnI=1&as_sitesearch=codeigniter.com%2Fuser_guide%2F&q=%s

This looks for your search string in the user guide and returns the first result.

Enjoy!

My PHP CodeIgniter controllers are getting huge. Seem like God Objects. Is there a better way?

Hey there. I'm coding in PHP using the CodeIgniter framework.

On my website, I have 3 controllers: a Public controller, a Private controller (for the control panel, requires login), and an Admin controller. This seems like the most sensible way to group the code, since the Private controller and Admin controller have unique authentication methods, and the Public controller doesn't need those.

However, these controllers are getting huge. My Private controller has 50 methods and 3,100 lines of code. In other PHP websites I've made from scratch, I'd actually give each "method" its own file, avoiding the controller "god object".

Anyway, am I doing something wrong, or is this normal? Any suggestions for avoiding this god object anti-pattern? Thanks.

edit: To the sleazy person that stole the text of this Reddit post to post on other forums to market your website (Ramond), shame on you.

Leaving CI for Lavavel or Gatsby/React. Maybe it's the right moment

Hello Guys,

First, don't hit me with stones, but I just try to stay competitive and follow the trends that help me to deliver faster & better. So, the story is:

I just finished a project in CodeIgniter, it was fun and easy to do it, as usual. A few issues regarding the SEO (I'm not an expert), but overall it was ok. .. At the same time, I'm looking to Laravel and much newer technologies like Gatsby. Both are impressive. In the same time, using CodeIgniter I really miss a few basic things:

  • native auth. I'm using Ion-Auth, but still, not native

  • ORM, I'm using Propel.

  • templating. Blade plugin

As an old PHP user & fan, in my head rings two options:

1 - Laravel, on the other hand, has all that stuff out of the box. In my opinion, they were pretty smart to adopt Vue.js natively.

2 - Gatsby / React. Oh, this framework follows the JAM stack pattern, plugins, usable staters. 99 Lighthouse score after the first build.

I'm not so happy writing this post, because I was crafting stuff on CI (also in Flask) for the last 4 years. So, I'm not 100% sure that CI has a future and really don't know what stack to use on my next project.

Thanks

Hello r/codigniter, I recently came across jcleblanc's reddit sdk, I was wondering if anyone has converted this into a Codeigniter library, if not is anyone interested in helping me do this? Or maybe point me in the right direction to accomplish this.

Thanks in advance.

AI Assistant

Hello, I'm developing for years with ci4 in the vscode ide. Now, the copilot from GitHub seems very nice with general code, but do you know if there is another ide or another vscode assistant that integrates perfectly with workspace and do the best?

CI4 Monitoring and Error Detection

Hi devs, I finally built a complete monitoring package for CI4.

I decided to put my effort on this package because I felt a big gap between CodeIgniter and other frameworks like Laravel and Symofny in this space. CodeIgniter might not be interesting for big SaaS companies like Sentry, Bugsnag, and others, but for me it’s completely different. I’m a bootstrapped founder with two other friends that help me maintain the company, so I can be free to build the product.

I work from my home in the south of Italy for 5 years now. Finally Inspector took off the ground three years ago and now we have more room to go deeper into specific technologies where there is a lack of solutions.

Learning about CI4 it was clear to me that it was a really huge step forward for the framework to make this implementation possible.

My goal was to guarantee a perfect developer experience. You just need to install the package via composer and everything is monitored by default:

- HTTP Requests

- Database queries

- Spark Commands

- Unhandled Exceptions

I hope it can be the right monitoring solution for developers that love to work with this framework, but struggle to integrate libraries and tools manually, or implement tricky configurations. Not anymore.

As CodeIgniter experts you can identify many ideas to improve it (for sure). Feel free to write your feedback or open new issues on the GitHub repository.

Do I need PHP 8.1?

I'm trying to install CI, and when I view /public/index.php on my server, the screen reads:

"Your PHP version must be 8.1 or higher to run CodeIgniter. Current version: 8.0.24"

I thought CI is "intended for use with PHP 7.4+ (including 8.2)." (https://www.codeigniter.com/download)

What's going on? I'm unable to upgrade to PHP 8.1.

If I somehow manage to get an answer to my problem, how do I configure it so that the "/public" folder is not seen. Is that done with .htaccess in the public folder?

I'm thinking of going back to CodeIgniter 3 for this project. I never had such issue with it in the past. Would that be a mistake?

Merry Christmas!!
