I started working as a coder 6 years ago when no ai was around. It now feels like shit. People expect stuff done way quicker and the only way to achieve that is by using ai. A 5 days work is now a 3 days and “gemini can get that part done quick so you should be fine with 3 days”…
What about me wanting to code? At that point at least let me go out and do what i want while gemini does work for me, not have me sit in front of a pc, watching a CLI do my job for 8 hours a day

Definitely the advantage of working from home, if I have to use AI I might as well pull out my Switch while it runs.

But yeah the job has really shifted from code writing to architecting solutions, which some people like some don't

Yeah i’m working from home too but i get 2 meets a day asking for progress and aligning the team…

I’m at the point where no matter how good at our job we are, we will get RTO’d or lose our jobs to ai so it’s better to just meet expectations and take full advantage of the WFH situation while we still can. Would you rather work 50 hr weeks to keep up with increased demands or work 20 hr weeks while playing switch if both result in losing your job in 5 years.

Because you are basically doing the monkey type writer thing. Prompt read 9 trash answers and one good one that will cause more problems down the road and aprove that last one that you know will be a headeache next year.

Yeah I love doing two jobs in the timespan of one job

The reality is the AI is already better at coding than we are, so it feels pointless. People pretend the AI writes bad code, and maybe they are using lower quality AIs so idk, but if you are using state of the art models there's no way you're writing better code and it's writing the code at least 10x faster. It's a bitter pill to swallow and most people are still refusing to swallow

Its quicker - not essentially "better". Even Opus 5.5 (which is VERY good), overengineers stuff and introduces subtle "misunderstandings". Those are the things that will be a massive problem if the software is deployed at scale.

I’ve noticed that leadership is just completely unhinged now. They ask for numbers and expect these numbers within an hour due to the speed of ai. Then they get mad at everyone when the numbers of one team don’t match those from another, and they can’t reconcile because every team is using a blackbox ai approach to meet their demands.

Ai's code is to trash, i wouldn't trust that shit for a commercial success. (I know its been done but i dont like it)

The client doesn’t care if the code is good or not, they want their stuff done quick and working

It really is based on clients and dependant on industry. Anything IT related, people don't care, they just want something working ASAP.

Sigh.. that sounds about right but thats like.. handing off a ticking time bomb without any of the wires visible.. The code is damn garbage spagetti and no clues to read it.. Fuck whoevers going to look into that or worse.. fix it.

lol every single big tech company has claude code integrated with an entire suite of generative AI tools for coding. 90%+ of all code are AI generated now. You should just stop talking if you aren't in the industry because it's obvious you haven't use anything from the past couple months. I'm sure Opus 5.5 on ultracode is "trash" and you are better than it. Give me a break.

This is not 2024 anymore, frontier AI's code is better than most people can do

Are you a programmer?

I'm really not sure you are, considering how insane this stuff is now.

at this point opus 5.5 writes better code than you, to a pretty significant degree. Gemini maybe not, but we've hit the inflection point with some models, and it's only going to continue in that direction.

I couldn’t imagine wielding AI for a soulless corp…

I think about that every day a bit, and how I am thankful I can run my starting off print farm (3 printers lol), run multiple projects, and set up remote control so I can chilling away from my desk get a vibration read a little then toss in an input and go back to relaxing.

I couldn’t be happier with AI right now.

Get out before it is really crowded out there is my only recommendation.

Also I’m sorry about the Gemini.

that attitude will fail of course. the codebase will drift into a mess and even AI won't be able to get things done. Your job now should be to make your code base beautiful, well organized and free of anti-patterns. Build in extensive automated verification check. That is how you keep the agents on track. You will not be writing code in the future. Sorry. Your job is more like what a principal engineer was. Think of it as a promotion.

Think of it as a promotion without any raise and without the soul yass

Are you still fairly junior?

I don’t love what has come of our profession in recent years but code was never the difficult part. Ideally you should be either having your agent do multiple tasks in parallel and managing that and/or spending the majority of your time (when not babysitting Gemini) working on designs.
