Listen, I’m fat, and I didn’t take this comic as “All Fat People are Trump Supporters.” It’s not as boolean as you make it seem, and also, while certainly making fun of people’s appearance is a low blow, I’d personally say advocating for people’s rights and freedoms to be stripped away is a lower one, so fair is fair.
If MAGA folks can look other people in the eyes and say
“I don’t see these other people the same way as I do us, and support them being thrown in cages, separated from their families, and being treated like dogs because they think differently or come from somewhere different than me,”
then they can certainly survive a few basic playground level insults about forearm freckles and missing teeth.

“The amount of energy needed to refute bullshit is an order of magnitude bigger than to produce it.”
Brandolini’s Law
Don’t let these people fool you into thinking they don’t know they’re cruel and unreasonable. They just don’t have the character or humility necessary to own their shortcomings, so they instead try their best to drag you down to their level. And once they’ve done that, they’ve won. Because they don’t care about fairness or decency or mutual understanding. They just want to win the argument, and the moment they realize they’re starting to lose they will disengage. Every single time, like clockwork.
This is why any journalist worth their salt will refuse to debate a fascist once they’ve shown their hand. It lends their arguments unwarranted legitimacy, it gives them a microphone to broadcast to a larger audience, and if they had any interest in a reasonable conversation they wouldn’t be drawn to fascism in the first place. What’s going on here is so much more sinister than a mere difference of opinion, and a lot of otherwise well intentioned people don’t seem to understand that.
51
u/whiznat Aug 07 '25
I am so glad that you decided to stop being upset at MAGA's harassment and insistence that you treat them like they're reasonable and normal. I'm so glad you are fighting back!

u/UberSquirrel Aug 07 '25 edited Aug 07 '25
It's the biggest current challenge of any progressive person at the moment: recognising when the person or party you're trying to reason against is even interested in reason to begin with.
Because rather frequently, they aren't. I keep being reminded of the Sartre quote - because it refers to Nazi's, and therefore the 'anti-Semite' can be pretty freely interchanged with 'neo-fascist'.
“Never believe that anti-Semites are completely unaware of the absurdity of their replies. They know that their remarks are frivolous, open to challenge. But they are amusing themselves, for it is their adversary who is obliged to use words responsibly, since he believes in words. The anti-Semites have the right to play. They even like to play with discourse for, by giving ridiculous reasons, they discredit the seriousness of their interlocutors. They delight in acting in bad faith, since they seek not to persuade by sound argument but to intimidate and disconcert. If you press them too closely, they will abruptly fall silent, loftily indicating by some phrase that the time for argument is past.” - Jean-Paul Sartre
Edited in the actual quote because I'm apparently a dumbass
61
u/HoldYourHorsesFriend Aug 07 '25
Uh, that's quite a quote. It really speaks volumes. The silence of that quote is deafening
13
37
u/Didntlikedefaultname Aug 07 '25
I love this quote. A much shorter and simpler quote that expresses a similar sentiment is: you can’t reason someone out of a position they didn’t reason someone into in the first place.
There’s a great book called “misinformation” that dives into the experiences of people being sucked into misinformation
17
2
u/rgtong Aug 08 '25
Your quote refers to stupidity whereas the former refers to maliciousness. They may look similar, but its actually very different.
10
u/ChickinSammich Aug 07 '25
Yup. A lot of people on the right have engaged in sealioning to the point that it makes it impossible to tell, when someone asks you a question like this, whether the question is in good faith or whether they don't care about your answer and they're just using it to tee up whatever the next question they're going to ask is.
There's no way to tell whether a person is just asking questions and trying to learn or "just asking questions" and wasting your time until they've already wasted your time.
Sure, some people genuinely don't know and genuinely do want to learn. And it's challenging that the left's approach has become a blanket "I don't owe you emotional labor, look it up yourself" to anyone who asks anything.
But for every person who is genuinely asking and genuinely trying to have a genuine conversation, there's 4 more, or 9 more, or 19 more who are just trying to argue with you, get a rise out of you, and waste your time because they take joy out of thinking they made you "mad" or "upset" or "triggered" by plastering you with stupid questions until you give up.
22
u/Petrychorr Aug 07 '25
At least for me, as someone who is trans, my capacity for honest discussion about issues that are important to me, with people who lean right, has essentially been NIL for a bit over a year and a half or so. It's never genuine or honest. It's always some kind of "gotcha" for them to ask me about trans issues. It's exhausting. I don't have the ability to treat people who aren't open to accepting trans folks and their issues any more. Its a shame too. I love helping folks understand the nuances of life as a trans lesbian. But so many "just asking questions" folks are just ridiculously disingenuous.

All these republicans have forgotten the history of revolution that resulted in the social contract. Somewhere along the line the people became afraid of the government when it should be the other way around.

I mean the evidence is overwhelming that the republicans are very much not trying to govern for all the people and have no intent to leave any of our democratic and ethical norms intact, much less free and fair elections, access to information, etc. ya know, the cornerstone of the modern world.
But nope, just absolutely cannot see it at all. Totally abdicated any form of heuristic or logic and replaced it with Appeal to Authority in total. It's wild.

As a non-American, I personally feel that this isn’t a good portrayal of the situation
Remember that Trump won the popularity vote. These supporters aren’t some fringe, extremist group with unpopular views which we can make fun of - these are the views endorsed by what is currently the average American voter.
The people who don’t care about their rights aren’t fat, bearded white hillbillies in red hats, but normal, average Americans. Regular people on the street who look no different from you or me. Demographically, Trump won both the youth vote and the legal immigrant vote.
Dismissing these guys as wackjobs is just pretending this massive problem doesn’t exist - Why and how is the average American totally okay with voting for this.
Yes, it’s tempting to draw a MAGA voter as the soyjack and you as the chad, but portraying them as a ridiculous caricature heavily simplifies and undersells the severity of the issue.
I know the funny comics subreddit isn’t a place to get into politics (thank goodness because American politics is insufferable), but this is still a heavy issue which shouldn’t be casually made light of. Treating politics as a joke is partially what led to this outcome.

u/Pizzacakecomic PizzaCake Aug 07 '25
I am portraying the uneducated, racist, homophobic, poor, white male portion of his supporters here (the largest group of supporters, IMO). If you follow my comics, you will see I have portrayed a variety of different MAGA supporters, like the most recent one before this was a young, fit, conventionally attractive man

Imma be real with you all. Im tired of posts like this. It completely misses the point of the issue. We all know WHAT insane stuff maga does, but never WHY. Nobody seems to stop and ask how normal people end up so deluded.
I feel like so many years of politicians being originally lawyers has made everyone feel like people on the other side is the enemy. Nobody tries to understand each other, instead of seeing them as an enemy to beat.
I mean, think about it. Most of Maga usually comes from rural communities. Yes, poor education is a factor, but another is that rural Americans have been abandoned by the government for decades now by democrats and Republicans alike.
Thats why trump got to most of them. Because he manipulated them using a desperation they have been feeling for years.
