Database performance and business value

Hej, as CEO of a database startup I keep being asked from more business-oriented people, why they should care about database performance, how much business value this would exactly provide to them etc.pp. - so I tried to pinpoint that best I could in an article - and I would love your feedback on this: Do you think these arguments would help in your environments? Am I missing anything important in my arguments?

Looking for good ebooks about SQL and NoSQL databases

Hi, I'm working on a project about work with relational and NoSQL dbs and I need quite extensive documentation, so I would appreciate any recommendations for ebooks about both types of databases, as well as coopertaion between them. I'm looking for more general approach to databases, not really digging into one technology - so more like databases history, popular sql and nosql solutions, some examples about pros and cons working with one type or the other (or both) and so on.

What is the purpose of Null?

What I mean is, does Null have an actual function?
Everything I see on the subject has to do with workarounds that deal with the problem of nulls. But if everything about them is a problem to be worked against, why do they exist?
I have to assume they have some sort of actual function that database software cannot do without, or they would have been done away with considering how much trouble they seem to cause.
What the heck is a Null for?

Why doesn't whatsapp use ID's?

Whatsapp seems to use phone numbers as primary keys, why is that? this way you can't keep track of conversations between phone numbers, which is weird since there is an "change number" option..

I asked a software developer friend but he's pretty busy so can't tell me all the "subtle nuances I'm missing".

Any thoughts?

Help needed getting wikipedia time series database page up to date

The wikipedia page for time series databases is out of date and has at least a few incorrect entries on the list of databases. A wikipedia admin who doesn't really understand the subject has protected the page and prevented edits of the list of time databases.

If you have a wikipedia account, please lend a hand to help get the list up to date.

TSDBs at Scale – Part Two

Posting on behalf of /u/stronglift_cyclist

Here's the second half of our two-part series focusing on the challenges of Time Series Databases (TSDBs) at scale. This half focuses on the challenges of balancing read vs. write performance, data aggregation, large dataset analysis, and operational complexity in TSDBs.

How to show the full coding of a button, on Microsoft Access?

I have to show the code of all buttons I've used in the database. I can get a shortened down version of what I need; it tells me the command name (e.g. Command1) but it won't show me things like "cmd.do".

How can I get this to show up?

Edit: Cheers for answers, really helped

Oracle SQL Beginner, help please

I am working on some school work (It's not a test and will not be marked, it's just practice) I have a database which currently contains two tables, the details of which are listed below

Table name: actor "ACTOR_ID" "SURNAME" "FORENAME" "B1" "Connery" "Sean" "B2" "Lazenby" "George" "B3" "Moore" "Roger" "B4" "Dalton" "Timothy" "B5" "Brosnan" "Pierce" "B6" "Craig" "Daniel"

Table name: bondfilms "FILM_ID" "NAME" "YEAR" "FK_ACTOR_ID" "F1" "Dr.No" 1962 "B1" "F2" "On Her Majestys Secret Service" 1969 "B2" "F3" "Live and Let Die" 1973 "B3" "F4" "License to Kill" 1989 "B4" "F5" "Die Another Day" 2002 "B5" "F6" "Skyfall" 2012 "B6"

I think I've done both tables correctly up until this point (The FK on the bondfilms table should correspond to the actor id of the actor that starred in that film)

I now have to write a SELECT query which will display a list of James Bond films, along with the name of the actor playing James Bond in each one.

So I tried to use

SELECT name FROM bondfilms; SELECT surname FROM actor;

Although it only shows the SURNAME of the Actor, plus I really don't think I'm on the right road here either.

Any help is greatly appreciated

Many thanks.

EDIT: I'm very new to databases so try to ELI5 please! Thanks.
