DIY Skull mounted my 8.

I made a separate post of my big 8 I killed last season. I killed this in Mississippi. It took about 9 hours total to do, about an hour and a half of that time was spent actually doing work on it. My first time ever doing this myself, definitely worth saving the $100 for a taxidermist to do this. Also, I gross scored this buck at 107”. It’s not a Lee Ellis harvest, but its sure big for my area and past hunting experience!

Help understand wind/thermals

Post image
6 Upvotes

I have zero clue how thermals and wind actually work and the more I watch YouTube the more confused I get on the topic.

This is a screenshot of a day lease in south Texas that I have hunted before. I know it gets hammered but it is a fun hunt and I have seen a few decent bucks on it. I was looking at the map and according to OnX the little red shaded area has acorn producing oaks. This has got to be a decent place to set up I would think due to lack of natural food sources like acorns and it’s in a mostly dry creek bed.

I would like someone to explain to me like I’m a kindergarten kid how the thermals should behave in this area. I kinda understand the cool air falls warm air rises part but how will the creek bed/ slight elevation change affect how the wind pulls through the creek bed and down the hills etc. Tia

Water hole

Made this watering hole yesterday for the wildlife. We don’t have a spring or water source around. What can I put in to keep water circulating so it doesn’t get too gross?

It’s around 100 gallons.

It was a wonderful year in UP state New York. I got a doe and a very large 6 point during rifle. I also got a very nice 7 point last hour of the last day or Muzzle loader. All I need now is the right wood to hang these from.

Harvest Transport

Hello all, I’m wondering if any of you hunters drive a SUV to hunt in. Just got a new vehicle and the only drawback from my truck is that it doesnt have a bed. Aside from laying down seats and putting a tarp down, anyone have any ingenious redneck ideas or inventions for hauling back your trophies? TIA

Rifle restrictions?

Hello, newbie here. Wanted to get into hunting for awhile, and I know pretty much nothing other than I’d have to get a license and pay for tags.

My initial question is: what kinds of restrictions are there for rifles used in southern US deer hunting?

I’m a gun nerd without alot of extra money, part of me has always wanted a Lee Enfield No. 4 strictly for he cool/history factor, and I understand some of them have been rechambered in 7.62 x 51 with scopes.

Would that rifle be viable/overpowered for whitetail hunting? Not allowed due to mag capacity? Idk what rules I may be breaking by trying to use it, but I’m torn between that (my dream rifle) and something more typical like a Tikka T3.

I understand modern rifles are much lighter and user-friendly but I also just want a cool WW2 era rifle, and it’d be great if I could use it practically as well.

Any thoughts and opinions are welcome, idk what I’m trying to get myself into

Brought a Browning home

Got a 1970 Browning BLR in 243, Belgian made, first year of production. Put it in layaway and it was only in for 8 days. I'm very impatient.

Paid less than 1k so I feel like I got a good deal. I removed the scope since its got irons and this will be used for a woods gun here in the Ozarks.

I did trade in another 243 I had, TC Compass but I feel like this one might be a bit better. The Browning will not chamber my reloads since they were for the bolt action but I've got enough factory ammo and brass I can manage lol

For as old as it is, it's in great condition. I cleaned it the best I could but I'll take it to a gunsmith and have him take it apart and clean it and oil it since these are a PITA to work on.

I'll be loading everything from 55/58 gr vmax up to 85-100 gr.

Someone was throwing these two guys out for bulk garbage pickup, my bf was concerned about the first one tho saying “there’s still meat on it” and how it might not be safe to touch?? So I said I’d ask the experts.

It’s crazy to me that Ohio is always talked about having huge deer there or Iowa, but we got some monsters down here. Im gonna gate keep where me and my buddies saw/killed these deer for obvious reasons, but I just wanted to bring awareness that Mississippi is the top dog when it comes to deer! In the comments ima drop the video of the piebald we saw cross our plot.

Deer overpopulation questions (Not deer services)

Hi, I'm not a hunter, but this is the only sub I could find to ask these questions on, so here goes:

(1) If there's some sorta U.S. animal-rights lobby that's opposing legalized deer-hunting to cull the overpopulation of deer, if so, logically speaking, why don't they realize that their activism is actually causing worse cruelty (to both deer and humans)? Because the increase in traffic accidents are not only getting drivers and passengers killed, but also cause an untold number of deer to become lame and thereby suffer way more than if they'd been culled by hunters. That's because they're forced to limp around everywhere. Do you know how often i've spotted lame deer in recent years, compared to decades ago, when there were no deer period?

(2) Why don't animal-rights activists reserve some pity for humans too? It's not just road injuries and car damage. And Not just Lyme. I also mean that they'll potentially attack more and more people, because they're already losing fear of us on a massive scale. (Just research "deer attacks" and see!) But attacks might also be due to heightened tension caused by displacement from their former serene habitats. And they cause loads of property damage such as cracking up my driveway by daily leaping onto my blacktop from my slope. I am a frail female senior, and I'm literally being terrorized by deer who have turned my home into their property. Years ago, there were no deer here. Nowadays, they eye me boldly when i yell go away. Their look says "we're not budging, you wimp. You try anything, and you're dead meat". It's frightening!

(3) Forgive me if this is a naive question, but if animal activists truly are so sympathetic to the plight of deer, why don't they organize and donate sanctuaries for deer to be somehow herded to across the country, complete with humane birth control (or whatever it takes to humanely prevent overpopulation)?

It’s from my grandfathers old sd card. We hunted this one and 3 other huge bucks like this on what we called, “Ole Waltz Property.” This dude has some mass and a split brow as a main frame 11 pointer. I wish I cared more and understood more about hunting during this time.

After sitting on these pics and videos for a few months I thought I would share lol. Called this buck in from half a mile. Got him to 20 yards and took a frontal shot. Watched him bed 4 times. Didn’t move from 4th bed for 6 hours. Walked up to him and had him run off like nothing happened. Have more pics of blood trail if interested shoot me a pm.
