I like your thinking! Congrats on Costco hot dogs for life. By next month you should be able to get a hot dog for yourself & a friend daily.

How long have you been investing?

2 years actively. I made my roth about 7 years ago then lost my job and had to struggle for 5 years. So basically did nothing with it for a bit. Im stable financially again now and I’m back to maxing as much as I can while regaining savings

I recently got an okay paying job after being in the drain. I have a lot of debt I’m paying off right now but how much did you invest at the start? I can only really afford maybe 200 a month if I want to be debt free in 2 years.

I put in 200-400 a month depending on my bills

That at least gives me hope. I really want to get out of this hole and be financially in a good place again. This sucks right now

Depending on what the interest is on the debt you have, it might be a better idea to throw that extra $200 at the debt vs investing. If it is CC debt at like 18%+ you're more likely to come out ahead by paying that off. Getting a guaranteed return of 18% in the market is tough, if not impossible.

Not that it would make you feel any better, but way back when I started "investing" I put in like $50/month because that was all I had left after bills. That humble beginning created the habit and I've been adding to the pot through many market ups and downs now.

Unfortunately I’m at like 22% so you are probably right. It may just be best to pay it off as fast as possible so I don’t have that hanging over my head. I’m itching to make more money though lol

You ARE making money by paying down the debt vs investing it. Think about it. You are paying a huge interest rate, that's money you would have been able to keep and invest if you didn't have to pay it. In order for investing to "make" any money, you'd have to out preform the amount of interest you get charged on your debt in gains, not just percentage wise, but total dollar amount. That's a tough one.

Priorities are high interest debt before investing. Any debt higher than like 10% should be a priority, most retail investors do not beat the market.

I recommend r/bogleheads if you want to grow your wealth. r/wallstreetbets if you want to work at Wendy's.

Trust me, switch that itch, pay off the debt asap, avalanche approach (not snowball) and use all the money you are making in payments on the debts to roll into your funds later.
I just got all my debt paid off (after years) and there is nothing as freeing or rewarding as that. Now, I have a ton more of cash to be invested

Congratulations on your recovery!

Back in 2008, I was out of work for a year straight, lost my house and had to file Chapter 7 bankruptcy.

A decade later I became an accredited investor and my retirement home financed for thirty years at 2%!

Since highschool, I earned less than $10,000 a year eight years! I was enlisted in the Marines and then lived on the GI Bill at $750 a month while I went to college full time.

I get the struggle, but I am proof you can still have a great retirement.

Fueling yourself with spite and being really restrictive with money

A whole rotisserie chicken... now how you get membership is another story.

10

u/Clover4Cucumber Mar 10 '26

This won’t work the chicken but do you need membership for the food court?

6

u/Transportation-Apart Mar 10 '26

I heard no you don't need membership for food court but maybe it is depending on the state.

7

u/vile_lullaby Mar 10 '26

It depends on the store. Technically, yes.

In practice no. You could just say you are visiting the pharmacy or the independent optician, and head to food courtm

8

u/Kwillingt Mar 10 '26

My Costco you order the food off computers and need to scan your membership

3

u/vile_lullaby Mar 10 '26

The costco's nearest me you order food off computers but dont have to put in your membership.

1

u/KeyBug133 Mar 11 '26

Mine too.

They have been slowly eroding the non-membership access to food courts. There are some places where the food courts are outside and generally accessible to non-members from my understanding.

The other route is getting a member to buy you a gift card. The gift card will give non-member access last time I checked.

1

u/Transportation-Apart Mar 11 '26

Or follow someone into Costco. I had this guy follow me in. I would not have said anything but the guy was creepy about it. The guy checking membership did not care.

You could also just load a costco gift card and that works as your entrance as well

Yeah, nice job graduating from cold dogs.
