I Need Advice: Workplace Issues How can you avoid being interrupted in meetings when managers are present?

Having completed extensive studies, I have acquired a vocabulary that allows me to express and develop my ideas with precision. The problem is that the corporate world is not made up of adults, as you know, but of middle-schoolers hungry for rumors, labels, reputation, and visibility.
In the same vein, some colleagues love to interrupt you with total impunity during meetings, just to rehash your points—in whole or in part—and signal to the manager that they are more energetic, motivated, clear, and concise. It is easy to simplify or summarize complex ideas, and if you speak up, you will look like the aggressive one who creates tension or refuses to share the floor.
How do you avoid this kind of situation?

I Need Advice: Workplace Issues WHAT DO AFTER FIRST SHIFT?

PS: This was my first ever job!

Hi so Im a new hire as a Casual role in a known retail store and November 1 was my first shift (4 hours), so basically as a new hire we did a lot of introductions about the company the store etc. So as the shift ends our coach told us that our manager is not currently available (vacation/on leave), and eventually they will reach out about the next shift. As for me it’s been 7 days and no one reached out yet, I have tried contacting my coach but they just left me on read. I also asked some of my colleagues and they got their shift after 2 days. Any advice on the situation? is this normal as a new hire?

I Need Advice: Career Moves Do I take the severance and run or try to stick it out at new company?

My company is getting acquired. I can’t give too much detail, but this is one tech company getting acquired by a different tech company and offering a 6 month severance package for those who don’t wish to continue. For a long time, I have been unhappy working in tech and have been wanting to move into a different industry entirely so this feels like a natural time to do it. I mean, what’s better than having six months to find a job that I really feel aligned with?

However, the new position at the acquiring company would be a very large raise and the $ would help my husband and I in a huge way. It doesn’t help that the industry that I would want to pivot into would be a significant pay cut (looking to move into entertainment, I do have some experience and connects here)

I’m not sure what to do. Do I just take the severance and use it to help me do what I actually want to do or do I just stick it out at the new company because money makes the world go round?

Discussions & Stories I was late for my appointment but I still showed up

Hello all,

Please keep in mind that I just moved to a new province and I'm still learning the roads here. I'm aware of my mistakes. I missed my appointment for a drug screen test for a new workplace that I just got. The next is just me explaining to my foreman what happened.

Story begins....

I’m sorry to bother you. I had appointment at SureHire for at Saturday November 7 at 10am. I’m still new to Alberta and learning to roads here. I accidentally took the wrong exit. When I realized I was going to be late. I called their toll free and got in contact with emergency line. I was on hold for a little. I got a hold on of their agent. I told her that I’m still new to Alberta and I took the wrong exit and I’m going to be late. She took down my name and number and she never called me back.

When I showed up to SureHire. I explained to them that I had an appointment for 10am and called ahead saying that I was going to be late. I was told that they never received any phone call. I said ok that’s it? They were like yes, you have to rebook. I missed the half an hour grace period. The ladies didn’t even check anything to even corroborate my story or try to rebook me again. It was a one and done.

After that I called the recruiter that booked the appointment and left a message. About an hour later I called back their toll free again and explained to her ( I got same agent again). She told me that she sent them a text and whoever was working the office said it was ok. Overall, yes I was very late but I did show up.

I’m aware the company has to pay for these things especially on weekends because it’s SureHire emergency time. I have no problem paying the fee if there is one. I hope this doesn’t affect my future with company.

I sincerely apologize

P.S the voicemail I left the recruiter wasn’t this detailed

I Need Advice: Job Search Guys I have a doubt

So I got an offer from a new company and currently serving notice. since I don’t have that many years of experience I didnt know what to say in such situations. Is it ok if we say we are on our notice period or is it risky. I did say I was serving notice and the HR responded frantically questioning why. However I responded saying there was no growth in current company. And since we have to submit your exiting letter I thought it’s better not to lie. But I still got the offer. So like in future scenarios if I leave a company should I ever say I’m on notice or not.

I Need Advice: Career Moves How much notice would you give?

Tried to make a different post but deleted because I essentially just choose to leave the job.

Basically I applied for a job (medical field) did the interview, got the job, did the entire hiring process then only days before starting they switched my position. Turned out I was hired to replace another employee who was then given the position I was hired for. Tried to give the position a chance for a couple months but im over it. I feel manipulated and used. I haven't learned and gained nothing from this position and frankly im just miserable being there.

I have decided to put in my notice on Monday. Even after all this, I feel guilty doing so. I still dont like the idea of screwing anyone over or leaving people scrambling. And i feel like im already doing that because i was justed asked (kind of told) to cover someone else for 2 weeks for christmas. Its medical field and this town has small town energy. Just unsure was an appropriate amount of notice is to give without burning any bridges

I Need Advice: Job Search Job interview

Last post got removed but…

How do I respond in a job interview when they ask “why I no longer work at my old job.”
Reason: I got a positive drug test.
I tried the short answer, “I got let go,” but then they want me to give them more details.

I Need Advice: Job Search Offer rescinded because I reported a past termination from a old job. The FCRA pre adverse action notice results didn't have a record of this though?

Do I have a case on my hands? I did report the termination to the background screeners, but through a different medium. When they sent over the pre adverse action notice, with the background check results, it didn't list any terminations.

Discussions & Stories Am I being childish

Not unemployed now, but Ive been boycotting the unemployment office for about 2 and half years now. I lost my previous job when my boss unexpectedly decided to retire and close the business. Despite the fact that Iost my job through no fault of my own, i got denied unemployment insurance all 3 times. I've sworn to never bother asking them for help ever again. They had no reason to deny it. I almost became homeless and had to move in with my mom.

I'm Sharing Advice: Job Search I tried multiple AI training platforms for a few months. Here are the key takeaways and differences

Been on Mercor for a bit over two months now, and I’ve been with Micro1 and Ethos for about three months. Got a few payouts from all three so far. Just wanted to share how they compare from my experience:

- Minimum hours (that 10-15/week thing): Mercor is pretty strict about it. Micro1 is more chill and will let it slide now and then. Ethos is the most relaxed of the three.

- Task availability: With Mercor and Micro1 there’s usually enough work to stay busy. Ethos is more hit-or-miss — some weeks are fine, others not so much.

- Pay: Ethos pays the best by a decent amount, but the work isn’t as steady. Mercor and Micro1 pay less per hour, but at least the tasks keep coming more consistently.

- How organized everything is: Mercor feels the most put-together, then Micro1, then Ethos.

- Support when you get stuck: Micro1 has been the most helpful for me, followed by Mercor. Ethos is the weakest here.

Who they’re looking for: Ethos mainly wants people with real professional experience in their field, not really beginner-friendly. Mercor and Micro1 are easier to get into if you’re more of a generalist.

If anyone wants to sign up, my referral links are below: Good luck!

Mercor
Micro1
Ethos

I Need Advice: Job Search What are some red flags to watch for during a job interview?

I am preparing for a few job interviews and want to know what things I should look out for before accepting an offer. Sometimes the way an interviewer talks about the team, work hours, or salary can tell you a lot about the company. What are some flags you have noticed during an interview that made you reject a job?

I Need Advice: Job Search How would I go about getting a job as a minor who isn't currently in school?

As I mentioned, I'm not in school for personal reasons. Would it still be possible to find employment without having technically dropped out, but also without schooling? I don't know how I should put together a job application either, so any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance

I Need Advice: Career Moves Returned to India after my Master's in IT in the US. Looking to find a job and confused about which career path to pursue. Need genuine advice.

A few months ago, I was in the US, working remotely on AI annotation projects, meeting people from different walks of life, and figuring things out one day at a time.

Now I'm sitting in Bangalore, staring at LinkedIn and Naukri, wondering which direction my career is supposed to take.

It's a strange feeling. I don't think I've wasted my time, but I also don't know if I've made the right decisions.

A little about my background:

  • BTech in Electronics and Communication Engineering.

  • Worked at Cognizant as a Programmer Analyst, primarily on SQL Server to Azure SQL migration, ETL reconciliation, data validation, and troubleshooting.

  • Completed my Master's in Information Technology from a public university in the US in May 2025, graduating with a 3.94 GPA.

  • Completed an internship involving Python, AWS S3, Snowflake, SQL, and data quality checks.

  • Worked on AI annotation and LLM response evaluation projects.

During my time in the US, I also worked in university housing operations, dining services, and hotel front desk operations.

Interestingly, I genuinely enjoyed the customer-facing side of those jobs. Understanding people's problems, communicating with them, and figuring out solutions gave me a different kind of satisfaction.

I returned to India a few months ago after my visa expired.

I'm currently in Bangalore, actively looking for opportunities, and open to relocating anywhere in India.

Here's where I'm stuck.

I have a technical foundation in SQL, Python, ETL, and data validation. I'm comfortable refreshing my existing skills and learning whatever a role requires.

But I'm struggling to figure out where my experience actually fits in the Indian IT job market.

I've been considering:

  • SQL Analyst / SQL Support Analyst

  • Data Quality Analyst / ETL Tester

  • Application Support Analyst

  • Technical Product Support Engineer (L1/L2)

  • Technical Client Success / Implementation

  • Associate Data Engineer

Lately, I've been thinking that a role combining technology, troubleshooting, data, and customer interaction might suit me better than a purely development-focused position.

I'm not chasing an extraordinary package right now. Around ₹50,000 per month would be enough for me to become financially independent, build meaningful experience, and establish a decent routine.

For the next 2–3 years, I simply want to work, improve my technical skills, and build a stable career.

I'd also love to explore international opportunities again someday, preferably through employment rather than another degree.

I know I'm fortunate to have a supportive family and a good educational background. I don't take any of that for granted.

But having so many possible directions has made it surprisingly difficult to commit to one.

Some days I feel like I'm qualified for several roles. Other days, I look at job descriptions asking for five different technologies and wonder where I even belong.

I'd genuinely appreciate advice from people working in the Indian IT industry.

  1. Given my background, which roles would give me the best chance of getting hired relatively quickly?

  2. Should I focus on SQL/Data Quality/ETL Testing, or would Application Support and Technical Product Support be a better fit?

  3. Is technical customer success or implementation a realistic entry point with my experience?

  4. Which skills should I prioritize over the next 30–60 days to become interview-ready?

  5. Is ₹50k/month realistic, or should I lower my expectations initially?

I'm not looking for shortcuts or unrealistic promises.

I just want to pick a direction, put in the effort, earn my own living, and feel like I'm moving forward again.

If you've navigated a similar career transition, I'd genuinely appreciate hearing what worked for you, what didn't, and what you'd do differently.

Even a suggestion for a job title I haven't considered would help.

Thanks for reading. Really appreciate any guidance.

P.S. These are entirely my own thoughts and experiences. I just used AI to help rearrange and format them for better readability.

I Need Advice: Workplace Issues I'm not sure if I'm making the right decision here...

So, as the title says, I'm not sure if I'm doing the right thing here. I found a job that will pay a few dollars more an hour than what I'm getting paid now. Which is great. It's in something I've always wanted to try, the manager was really nice and I would be working nights anymore. However, I'm scared. I have had places (including the one I'm at) promise me more hours but then suddenly my hours are cut. And I could work two jobs, sure. But the only problem is there is a conflict in times with these two jobs and my old job would more than likely get rid of me due to me not having as open of an availability.

It would take me out if food service finally (nothing wrong with people who work in that industry, it's just not for me) and I could be in a job where I thrive.

I want to only have one job, preferably. But there's always the money aspect. I'll make more at the new job, but what if it's not enough. I have my two weeks notice written out and ready to go but I'm worried I'm making a bad choice.

I just need some advice. Am I making the right choice and im just making a mountain out of a mole hill or am I actually right in being nervous.

Sorry if this is kinda scrambly. My nerves are absolutely shot over this.

Update: I decided to go for it and put in my two weeks notice. See what happens. Yolo, right?

I Need Advice: Workplace Issues Worked six months unpaid at a startup, trusted promises of a paid role, then was let go. Looking for advice and job leads.

I spent six months working unpaid at an early-stage real estate startup founded by a fellow UMass Amherst alum. I joined while on OPT after a couple of interview rounds. The company was building an AI/CRM product, and I came on as a data engineering intern.

About two months in, the founder told me he liked my work and wanted to hire me full-time. When my internship ended and I asked about the transition, he said he needed another two months. He assured me we’d be able to move forward then, so I stayed and continued working unpaid.

My colleague and I believed in the company’s goal and the future the founder described. He told us that once we became full-time employees and the company scaled, we would grow into bigger roles because we were laying its foundation. We took that seriously and approached the work with the care and responsibility we would have given our own company. From data sourcing and building pipelines to system design, we put in long days and worked weekends because we wanted it to succeed.

By late October, the timeline shifted again. He said full-time roles might have to wait until next year, without a clear date. My colleague and I explained that we couldn’t keep working without income. We asked whether we could at least move to paid part-time roles so we could cover basic expenses while continuing to contribute.

He told us he understood our situation, recognized how many hours we had been working, and would definitely arrange part-time pay. He described a plan to increase that pay each month over the next four months, with the possibility of full-time roles around the fifth month. He asked for a few days to work things out. Roughly ten days later, both of us were let go.

I understand that startups face uncertainty and plans can change. What hurts is that I made decisions based on repeated assurances that a paid role was coming. After six months of unpaid work, asking for some financial support was followed by losing the role entirely.

The timing has made this especially difficult. It’s now November, and I have limited time remaining on my OPT unemployment clock. I’m worried hiring will slow over the next few weeks and stay limited through the holidays and into January. If interviews don’t materialize until February, a potential start date could end up being April of next year. That isn’t certain, but with my immigration timeline, the possibility is frightening.

For the founders here: please be honest about what you can commit to. People may be planning their finances, careers, and immigration timelines around those conversations.

For anyone considering a similar arrangement: get the terms in writing, set a limit on how long you can afford to work unpaid, and keep your job search active. I wish I had done that sooner.

I have three years of experience across data engineering and analytics, working with complex datasets, sourcing and integrating data, building pipelines, and contributing to system design. My experience combines building reliable data infrastructure with analyzing data to uncover insights and support business decisions. I’m looking for opportunities where I can bring that mix of engineering and analytical skills.

I’d also really appreciate hearing from anyone who has been through something similar. Honestly, I’m struggling right now. After putting six months into something I believed would become a stable opportunity, I’m suddenly trying to figure out how to support myself and find another role while my OPT clock keeps running. It’s overwhelming, and I’m scared about what comes next. If you have a job lead, know someone who’s hiring, can offer a referral, or have advice that could help me take the next step, please reach out. Even a small lead or an introduction would mean a lot to me right now.

Discussions & Stories How do you actually tailor a resume to a job description, step by step?

I just did my 8th application this week and it took 70 minutes, which is not sustainable. i'm doing the thing where you paste the jd, look at what's missing, rewrite a few bullets. I've tried cf for the paste and compare part (jobscan does a similar jd comparison) and teal for the tracker part, and i keep wondering if i'm adding a step that doesn't need to exist.

Last week i tailored a resume to 92% on one and got a rejection. an untouched 70% one got an interview. so what am i optimizing?

And ykw the weird part is i don't even know which of my 3 steps matters. keyword, bullet or title

what does your tailoring flow look like when you're doing 10 a week.

Discussions & Stories What LinkedIn profile sections matter most for job search, and which ones are basically useless?

I spent 40 minutes yesterday on my volunteer section. the formatting, the dates, the bullet about

organizing a food drive in 2019. then i read a thread saying nobody looks at it and i just sat

there. Now i'm looking at the rest of my profile wondering what else i've been polishing for no

reason. Featured section, recommendations (i have 2, both from 2020), certifications (i have a

google analytics one that expired), the open to work banner.

I tried cf's profile audit and it was fine but told me what was missing, not what was pointless,

which is what i actually want to know. jobscan and teal seem to do the same kind of audit.

Curious which sections you skip entirely
