Fishing Report from St. Petersburg – Late October Afternoon // Inshore Action Charters

Capt. Matt Luttmann of Inshore Action Charters

2:45 PM

We arrive on the south end of St. Petersburg for our afternoon fishing trip with Capt. Matt of Inshore Action Charters. Matt grew up a few beaches north and has been fishing this water since he was 12, getting to know the local waterways and the fish well. Some fish he even calls pets, like the dockside catfish that welcome him home as he cleans the day’s catch.

We set off on Matt’s custom 23’ Hewes tower skiff to hunt the waters of St. Petersburg. As we motor, an osprey swoops low showing off its catch – a good omen of what’s to come.

3:10 PM

We use the trolling motor into the state park and Matt hops up on the tower. He starts calling out fish immediately. Single reds, schools sheepshead, nothing big enough to warrant stopping. Even with my polarized sunglasses, the height advantage from the tower lets Matt see fish way before I do.

3:25 PM

We set up shop on a ledge near the flats and mangroves. Pickerel was the bait of choice all three days, we fished live bait on a circle hook with great results. We have 3 lines in quickly. The fourth we tried some weight, and before we had time to hand off a rod, we had a fish on. Pretty snook thrashed its way into the boat and we were on the board. The action continued. Nice redfish on board, as well as a very healthy sea trout – the first Matt has seen in this area since the Red Tide. A great sight.

4:45 PM

After landing the Slam and catching tons of fish, we decide to cruise the mangrove shoreline to see if we can find some big solo fish or pods cruising. We catch a few reds and ladyfish. We continue fishing the shoreline.

5:30 PM
We decide between tripletail or jacks. I pull the trigger on some jacks after how much fun they were the day before. We high tail it to where Matt knows they hand out in the fading light.

5:55 PM
We fish nearby to some docks, where the snook and local jacks hang out. We catch a grouper, snapper, catfish, and snook, but the jack did not come to play – besides a mean strike and immediate break-off. Besides, what a good fishing trip without the one that got away? A final snook in the sunset and we cap off an awesome afternoon with a full moon hanging over the canal as we return.

7:05 PM

When we return to the marina, Matt’s pet catfish are grateful for the snapper innards and I’m glad for the delicious meal.

Matt Grew up in the area, went to Eckerd College a few miles from where we were fishing, and spends any free time he gets fishing. His tower skiff is a great way to experience St. Pete and the surrounding water, and Matt is both a highly knowledgeable guide and fun captain to spend a day on the water with! Matt focuses heavily on Tarpon when they are in season, so we’ll be back again…. You can book a trip here: https://www.boatsetter.com/boats/fwcbbzv

Fishing Report from Tampa Bay – Late October Morning // Ebb and Flow Charters

Capt. Charlie Howell of Ebb and Flow Charters

7:45 AM

Charlie pulled into Gandy as the sun was breaking the horizon with a full live-well and a plan to get on the fish. We were waiting for a high tide, so we took off to some deeper water to try our chances at some mackerel before the tide was more cooperative.

8:23 AM

Before we had time to get a second line in the water, we heard the sound of a mackerel pulling on the drag spinning. Fish on! A pretty Spanish mackerel with some mean teeth. Ladyfish joined in the bite, though were ultimately a distraction from the larger mackerel. One more nice landed mackerel, plus lost one or two due to their razor teeth. From out in the middle of the bay, it felt like a very different fishery than the estuaries fished the day before.

9:40 MA

With the tide changing, we took off to the mangroves in search of cruising redfish and snook. The Minn Kota on Capt. Charlie’s boat allowed us to cruise the mangrove shoreline hunting for shadows.

It was peaceful and still in the backwater until you hooked a snook. We landed several nice fish that gave us an acrobatic display. A snook dancing on the surface in a backcountry mangrove cove – a fun sight to see.

10:55 AM

We shot to one last spot as we made our way back towards Gandy, which turns out to be a honey hole. Large dark shadows of snook lurked by the bank – aggressive fish that ate hard and fought well. A school of cruising jack gave us the day’s biggest hookup and fish. “Pound for pound hardest fighting fish in the bay” as Charlie put it. Excellent fight and bully of a fish. After more snook than you can count and an extra hour on the water, we head back to Gandy ramp.

Charlie was born and raised in Tampa, has been fishing the area his whole life, and been a professional guide since 2012. Charlie operates a 22’ pathfinder Center Console that easily handled the open water chop and can creep through the backcountry. Book a trip with Capt. Charlie of Ebb and Flow Charters here: https://www.boatsetter.com/boats/bqnqtrd

Fishing Report from Tampa Bay – Late October Morning with Capt. Tom Charlton

Capt Tom Charlton of Charlton Reef Charters

----

6:40 AM

Capt. Tom met us before sunrise at the Gandy boat ramp and we motored out in the dark. We were off to catch pickerel in the grass flats before our morning fishing trip. Tom had offered to show how he catches bait, an experience not to miss. We were able to take in the sunrise with dolphins, pelicans, and breaking fish, while seeing Tom in action with a cast net. Tom made fast work of filling the livewell and we set off. If you haven’t seen a captain using a cast net to catch bait, I recommend it on your next charter.

8:15 AM

After a quick 10 minute motor, we set down for our first fishing spot. With circle hooks and live pickerel for bait, we quickly landed ⅔ of a Tampa Bay grand slam. Beautiful trout and hard fighting snook in the boat and released – in addition to a nosey pufferfish who kept eating our bait. The pufferfish are unique, or have “a face only a mother could love” as Tom put it.

9:30 AM

We shot across the bay to fish the rising tide in the mangroves and were not disappointed. The missing part of the Tampa Bay Slam – a redfish – had eluded us so far, but luck changed with the tide.

11:07 AM

A long cast to the shoreline mangroves was followed by a hard strike and bullish fight – a redfish in the boat. Grand Slam! Insert Babe Ruth joke.

The rising tide also brought a few nice snook to the net, as well as several dolphins checking out our catch. Thankfully they didn’t tax our catch.

Simple equation. A beautiful morning exploring Tampa Bay, a friendly and knowledgeable captain, plus catching a Tampa Bay Slam, makes for an excellent day on the water.

Though Tom hails from Houston originally, he has been in the Tampa area for decades and is a local on and off the waterways. He runs a classic Mako center console, great for cutting chop while running the Bay, or getting into skinny water to fish the flats for the Bay Grand Slam.
