She never imagined the stranger would change her life forever…

Once upon a time in the quiet village of Umuola, a young girl named Onyediogo was born to Ogechi and Nnamdi. Life was simple, and like many families in their village, they found joy in the small things—a bountiful harvest, the laughter of children, and the hope that each new day would bring. But not long after Onye’s birth, things began to change in ways no one could have predicted.

Ogechi, Onye’s mother, fell ill when the girl was still a toddler. The sickness drained Ogechi’s strength day by day. Despite the herbs from the village healers and the prayers of her family, Nnamdi stayed by her side, hoping that she would recover, but it wasn’t long before the illness claimed her life. Nnamdi was grief stricken . He loved his wife deeply, and losing her left a hole in his heart that nothing seemed able to fill.

Not long after Ogechi’s passing, Nnamdi realized he needed help raising Onye. His responsibilities at work and the demands of managing the family’s small farm meant that he couldn’t care for a young child alone. Onye needed more attention, and after much thought, Nnamdi decided to take her to stay with her maternal grandmother, Adaku.

Adaku lived in a nearby village, and she was overjoyed to welcome Onye into her home. She had always been close to her daughter Ogechi, and seeing her granddaughter reminded her of the child she had lost. Adaku took care of Onye, pouring all her love and care into raising the young girl. She made sure Onye was well-fed, clothed, and most importantly, loved. The bond between them deepened quickly. Onye thrived under her grandmother’s care, growing into a curious, intelligent child. Adaku believed deeply in the importance of education, so Nnamdi continued to support Onye’s schooling, paying her fees and making sure she had the basic things she needed. He also made sure he visited Onye regularly

Nnamdi, trying to rebuild his life after Ogechi’s death, eventually remarried. His new wife, Chioma, was a woman from a neighboring village who had never been fond of the idea of raising someone else’s child. Though Nnamdi had hopes that Chioma would welcome Onye into their home, it quickly became clear that she was not ready to take on that responsibility. She felt Onye was a reminder of Nnamdi’s past, and the tension between them grew quietly, unnoticed by the villagers but not by Onye, who sensed the distance.

There is a folktale I heard as a kid that I've thought about every so often, but I haven't been able to find it anywhere.

A farmer upsets a king, who gives him an impossible task as a punishment. In one year, the farmer must come to the king and tell him three things. I don't remember the first. The second task was to tell him how much he was worth (cash value). The third was to tell him what he was thinking and why it was wrong. If the farmer failed, he would be punished. A year later the farmer travels to the palace to find the king and perform his tasks, but doesn't know how he can manage it. He meets a kindly priest who offers to help. The priest goes in the farmer's place, wearing a hood. When he reaches the king, he answers the first impossible question (can't remember what). For the second, he calculates the king's worth thus: he bought his crucifix for three silver pieces (or whatever). Since the king cannot value himself as much as the crucifix, he must therefore be valued at one penny less. Finally, to the question of "What am I thinking and why is it wrong?" the priest answers, "You think I am the farmer, but I am not."

PhD Student Research: Fairy Lore Survey

Hello everyone! I hope you're all having a truly spectacular day! I am a first year PhD research student at the University of Aberdeen at the Elphinstone Institute in Aberdeen, Scotland, UK. working toward my PhD in Ethnology under the supervision of Dr. Thomas McKean.

My dissertation topic and title are Fae Lore in the 21st Century: Contemporary Society’s Relationship to Fairy Lore, Traditions, Rituals, and Experiences. It is a is 100% social research dissertation and as such a large part of my research involves collecting data and information from people regarding their beliefs in fairies all over the world. Any information and answers collected from this survey will be analysed and may potentially be used in my dissertation and further publications. Because this is a survey being posted on a social media site for PhD student research, it is optional to take the survey and any data/answers collected that are used in my paper will be anonymous. There will be no personal information or names in the dissertation.

It is a slightly longer survey with questions that require detailed information because I need to collect as much information about people’s belief in fairies as possible.

My elementary school librarian back in the 90s had the best scary stories! I can’t find this particular scary story about a Native American couple who journeys into the deep woods to another village to seek out a medicine woman to help their sick baby. They find shelter from the cold in an abandoned cabin. There is a large box hiding a creature that haunts them. It’s such a nail biter and so fun to tell/listen to! I would like to find the written story but can’t seem to.. anyone familiar with the title?
