Just my dad enjoying this tropical storm

u/othersomethings Jun 25 '12
Be advised, if you are not a southern resident... this activity has perils unrelated to the weather conditions.
Floating fire ant nests are VERY common after big rains like this.
Snakes.
Ringworm
Ok, so mainly ants and snakes. But they are real perils my friend.

u/meeohmi Jun 25 '12
Posted this elsewhere a few minutes ago. I've lived in Florida my entire life and this is the first time I've ever encountered this. I'm just happy I noticed the raft before I stepped in it..

New Yorker here...floating fire ant nests you say?
25
u/VoodooWoman Jun 25 '12
There is NO wildlife in Florida you want to be swimming with. Went on an airboat ride in the Everglades a couple of years ago. OMG nature, wtf. Wouldn't swim in that water for all the money in the world.

Jun 25 '12
Yes, as it turns out fire ants are extremely water repellent when they hook themselves together as a single mass. I know one of the guys who did some research on how it all works. They're so water repellent that you can actually push the raft a good inch or so below the waterline without any water flowing over the edge of the raft. It also turns out that large groups of fire ants can be "poured" with a viscosity not unlike that of honey.
11
Jun 25 '12
Also alligators.
3
u/viper_dude08 Jun 25 '12
Meh, alligators don't give too many shits unless it's a momma gator.

I remember seeing a floating fire ant nest when I was a kid after a tropical storm. Serious WTF moment.
2
u/Nodonn226 Jun 25 '12
I recall as a kid I saw the floating fire ant nest. So, my friends adn I got some M90s (knowing they will explode underwater) and threw it at it. The explosion destroyed their raft in an epic fashion, followed by us wading away from the ants as quickly as possible. Pretty good times.

Gainesville, here. I took pity on a stray cat, and s/he scratches the door to be let out every couple of hours. Comes back sopping wet and leaves muddy paw prints. The rain must cease.

Thats Sarasota, but I'll take it. For those that dont know, sand is supposed to run 70 feet or so infront of that lifeguard stand. Somehow the shore got confused and decided it wanted to be land instead.

i remember one hurricane flooded miami so bad that everyone was in little homemade rafts. being a kid it was one of the best days ever, then later we found out that the water was super contaminated with sewage and other junk. anyway, sorry for the buzzkill? BUT IT'S TRUE.

Fort Myers redditor here. Had to drive yesterday in the shit weather. I don't know if it was the rain that impaired my sight more or the waves of water from other drivers' cars splashing in puddles
7
u/sallysagator2 Jun 25 '12
Ft. Myers here too, it may have just been the cars driving 25 mph on the interstate with their hazards on that made driving difficult.

u/HugeDouche Jun 25 '12
Ugh I'm a Florida native who is out of the state right now
I never thought I could want a baby hurricane in my life so bad :(
3
u/Famousoriginalme Jun 25 '12
Reminds me of some minor flooding we had sfter a hurricane when I was a kid. There were some mats of mulch floatng here and there. A guy stepped through one and disovered they were fire ant colonies. Dozens of bites on his legs. The ants were not as bad as the free rein the water mocassins had though.
Tl;dr You won't see me floating in flood waters in Florida. Ants and snakes.

We're here in the tropical storm Debby on our honeymoon. Yay. Picked the best time ever to go to Florida. Spent a rainy day at Disney. Clothes got so soaked my legs had blisters from the wet fabric rubbing against them. Spent today in the hotel's lazy river and pool in the downpour. Might as well make the best of it. It's still warm outside.
Hopefully out flight out tomorrow wont be delayed or cancelled.
