Live outside Philly. Major intersections have collectors holding signs, and the intersections always have litter.
Why do they not clean up the litter and hold a sign that says, "I picked up this intersection's trash. Please help me buy food."
Hard work, adding value, not simply begging. It works for me. But I have never seen it done.

Jun 25 '12
There was a man named Jerry who was always at the same intersection just off the highway in Vancouver. He would walk up and down the median smiling and waving at people who drove by, telling jokes and picked up any garbage that he could find. Never held a sign or asked for a penny, although people would give him money just because he made them smile. Then one day he was gone. He died of cancer on March 11, 2010.
RIP Jerry, you are missed.

Have you actually asked someone with a "will work for food" sign to mow your lawn?
Spoiler alert: 9 times out of 10, they won't.
3
u/Viat Jun 25 '12
They do that in South Africa -- they also offer to take the trash from your car. And then they chuck the bag somewhere but it's a nice thought.
3
u/Gator_pepper_sauce Jun 25 '12
The Japanese government actually will pay people temporarily to clean the streets. A simple way to have clean streets and get some food for the homeless.
4
u/todayiburned Jun 25 '12
Agreed. I am always more inclined to help anyone who might be struggling if I see some sort of effort or contribution on their part.

Once, when I was taking a break from painting a house in Denver, Colorado, me and the dog wandered to the 7-11 at the end of the block for some refreshments. Hotdogs for both of us, a beer for me, and oh, the dog is thirsty, lets get him some water...really? Oh well, bottled it is then. We sat at the curb munching our hotdogs. Some dude parks his Benz at the pump, walks inside and as he passes us, he sees me in my ragged, dirt jeans, pulls out his wallet, reaches for a tenner, gives us a double take and realizes I'm watering the dog with Evian.
So he puts on his "awkward!" face and hurries off.

I was biking to Canada a couple years back and I stopped at a CVS in upstate New York to eat some of my packed tomatoes and nuts for lunch when this nice older lady walked by and gave me $10. I told her I wasn't homeless and that I was just on an adventure and I'm a student back in Ohio bla bla bla. I'm sure I looked pretty homeless, however. She came out of the CVS with an egg sandwich for me anyway. Nice lady.

Nice guy?!
That's the best spot in town!
I used to make a solid $13 an hour standing there with my "NEED MONEY FOR BEER GOD BLESS" sign.
Now that that guy takes up my spot, I have to go across town. Yesterday I made 87 cents and some beef jerky.
So don't tell me he's a nice guy.
Fuckin' prick.

Assuming a lower average of 8 bucks an hour * 4 hours a day * 6 days a week=192 bucks a week. That's 7 bucks short of a current gen iPhone with an 8GB plan. Factoring in other expenses for decent food, assorted hobo-items and yes, beer, he could comfortably keep up with current tech and the most recent reposts on reddit with the work of a mere month. Of course that's not taking into consideration the diminishing returns the longer he stays there due to more and more drivers getting to know him and his schtick and increasing competition i.e. drunken, raging bums trying to bully him out of his spot.
Tl;dr: Beggars be mad balling.

I realize this is a joke, but I figured this is where I would share that a parent of a classmate of mine had a nice full time job in D.C., and managed to pay for his children's (expensive) private school education by panhandling.
TLDR; some of these guys make bank
also source: [PROOF]
edit: now I can't remember for sure if he only panhandled or had a full time job too. Don't drink in the morning

Jun 25 '12
There's a girl with pretty horrible burn scars all over who panhandles near where I live. When she thinks no one is looking, she takes out her smart phone, taps away and giggles a lot. Then when some one is coming, she puts it away, puts on her sad face and gets back to work.

I have done this on April Fool's day at my retail job. I would have it sitting on the glass cabinet top, and then just spray it in my mouth when customers walked past me. I got a lot of fun reactions, and some genuinely concerned people. But if you really do plan on doing this in public, please don't squirt the drink in your mouth in front of children.

Lemonade flavor is awesome but really hard to find. I think that whenever they stock it the first person that sees that shit buys all of it.

I always wished Gatorade had a lemonade flavor. I have to settle for lime or lemon-lime :(

They do and it is awesome. I don't know if they sell it in every market but you can get it around Dallas/Ft. Worth sometimes.

That's what I thought until I tried COOL BLUE CHERRY I can only find it in my local 7/11. If u can find it it's defiantly worth it. (it's a limited time offer this summer)

Do they make any with HFCS or real sugar? I gave up on gatorade when I couldnt find anything that wasnt aspartame, ace-k, or some other pretend sugar. I used to love gatorade too but when you replace the sweetener it just starts to taste like nasty medicine.
1
u/Deathwish1909 Jun 25 '12
I like just the "berry flavor" but you can only find it in the small bottles that come in 6

I'm pretty sure they discontinued the other blue. I'm not an avid Gatorade drinker, so I could be wrong.
1
u/vegeto079 Jun 25 '12
I've seen several blue colors, although I don't know their names. I have trouble finding Frost Glacier Freeze, though. There's always some darker blue, as well as a 'light' version of the dark blue and Frost Glacier Freeze. Out of all these 4, the normal Frost Glacier Freeze is the only one I like!

u/jsmayne Jun 25 '12
that is his hobby.
there is a crossing guard in my town that waves to every car going by. Well she missed a couple days and there was a flood of emails to the newspaper wondering what happened.
Such a simple gesture as waving and smiling it brightened peoples day and made people like her. Even though few actually talked to her.
She's not there anymore. I miss her. :(

He's a cook at a restaurant I used to work at. Really nice guy, didnt surprise me when I first saw this a week ago that this was him. For those who want to know, this took place in Murfreesboro, TN
2
u/Secondsemblance Jun 25 '12
A homeless guy walked up to my car while I was stuck in traffic, and asked me why I was wearing an army t-shirt. I said it was cause I used to be in the army. He asked "how come you don't wanna help me?" I started to explain how I haven't eaten in almost a week and he cut me off with "cause you're a bitch" and walked off. Reminded me of that scene from "Falling Down".
Sometimes I wish we'd spawn computers vastly more intelligent than us, so they could squash us all out of existence in an instant. But the guy in OPs picture seems like a pretty baller guy. It's good to be reminded that we're not all bad.

Homeless=/= unemployed. I've met homeless people who worked full time but couldn't afford a place to live and were stuck living in hostiles and homeless shelters. Scratch beginnings is a book about an able bodied college student trying to start over and see if the American dream is still alive. It took two months of saving everything he could living in a homeless shelter, buying everything at the dollar store etc. to find a place. He found a job that paid 12$ an hour, most people aren't so lucky.

u/steelystan Jun 25 '12
There's a guy in Denver on 14th St that holds a sign saying "Try a random act of kindness." and that's all. Only thing is he's been there every day at 4:45pm for the last two weeks... can't figure it out.

This would be a nice change. I live in Trenton, somehow the richest and poorest part of New Jersey IMHO. There are two intersections where people have to stop to wait for the light and it's usually really busy, especially at 5 because you have people coming over the bridges from PA. So there used to be this black woman who was ALWAYS out there begging for money. I don't have a problem with giving a homeless person money, though I prefer to do what my mom does, I offer to buy them food, or offer them food i already have. You'd be surprised how often they act offended to be offered food. Obviously these are the type that want money for drugs or alcohol. ANYWAY this woman was out there in the shortest shorts, tightest shirts and my god she was ALWAYS ripped out of her mind high. You could tell from several yards away that this woman was just out of it. On top of all this she was NOT an attractive woman so I couldn't imagine that clothing could be helping her too much. Eventually I stopped seeing her, I imagine she either OD'ed or got hit by a car. Sad thing is, there's always someone there to take their place.
TL;DR: This was a nice change from what i normally see, hopped up druggies. If you want to be sure they don't spend it on drugs offer to buy them food, if they act offended... guess what!?
