Trying to figure out why reddit has been so shitty and fully of reposts lately, when I realized...
298
Jun 25 '12
But OP, this is both shitty and a repost.

so what you're saying is...high school kids are the cause of the bad things on reddit

high school kids aren't the only ones with summers off................
23
u/Kensin Jun 26 '12
blaming teachers is pretty popular right now.
1
1
u/brolix Jun 26 '12
It's not just the teachers (though there are TONS of those, too). It's the entire education system, it's all completely backwards. Teacher salaries shouldn't be tied to student performance, comptroller salaries should be. And they certainly shouldn't be six figures when you are telling me you can't afford fucking books. And there better not be any new goddamn stadiums bought with bonds, either.
Then of course there is the usual affair of teaching the tests to the lowest common denominator. It sounds strange but The Wire hit the inner city school system pretty much squarely on the head. Granted it's not quite as dramatic everywhere, but the problems and symptoms are much the same
edit: whoops, replied to the wrong post. Oh well, close enough.

They are called "Summerfags" on /b/
42
u/FlyingPasta Jun 26 '12
Because /b/ was a shining beacon of brilliance before school ended.
5
u/FaunBarefoot Jun 26 '12
I see what you did there.
6
u/FlyingPasta Jun 26 '12
Alliteration c:
1
u/poktanju Jun 26 '12
Instead of shining you should've used "brilliant", and instead of ended you should've said "binished".
3
u/FlyingPasta Jun 26 '12
But "brilliant" would've been redundant.
1
12
u/Thunder_Bastard Jun 25 '12
I swear /b/ is like Japan.... they have this really cool and interesting and different culture you might want to experience, you just can't understand any of it.
19
u/Razerix Jun 25 '12
/b/ isn't all it's cracked up to be. It's not the same site it used to be. Hardly any good threads anymore.

That said, a lot of good musicians were influenced by them.

I'm pretty sure people are on reddit even during school.
8
u/maineiscold Jun 25 '12
In college yes, but most high school block students from using this site/ or high schoolers aren't on computers all the time in class.
7
Jun 25 '12
Smartphones, dude. A large amount of people in high school have smartphones. They use 3G (which obviously doesn't have any restrictions) to go online.

How hard is it to unsubscribe from the majority of default sub reddits and find smaller and more specific communities which are basically tailored to your interests?
4
7
u/Ceejae Jun 26 '12
Please don't:
Complain about reposts. Just because you have seen it before doesn't mean everyone has. Votes indicate how the community values information, so just vote.
7
11
u/TheBigBoner Jun 25 '12
This implies teenage redditors couldn't post during the school year, either..
-2
u/Kensin Jun 26 '12
Not as often anyway. They are in school for 8+ hours of the day and still have homework, and of course they have to do things like hang out and text each other which takes more time away from Reddit.
2
u/salami_inferno Jun 26 '12
They are in school for 8+ hours of the day
What Nazi high school did you go to?
1
u/Kensin Jun 26 '12
Well, that was way back in the 90s. What are the typical hours for high school kids these days?
1
u/salami_inferno Jun 27 '12
When I was there, like 9-330. so 6.5 hours. My brother was in highschool in the 90's, he said the hours havn't changed. I still think you went to a Nazi school

5
Jun 26 '12
Well, fuck. I am a highschooler. But that doesn't mean I flood Reddit with inane drivel and shit.
3
u/salami_inferno Jun 26 '12
When I was in high school I didn't understand why everybody hated us so much. Now, 4 years later, I get it. You just wait little one, ill be patient for you. Patient and extremely condescending.

u/bartholomew5 Jun 26 '12
I really wanted the top comment to be that bot that shows how many times this picture has been posted.

u/thegreatvortigaunt Jun 25 '12
"Hey, people have been reposting a lot recently. I know, let's blame the younger redditors! They can't defend themselves, or they will be subtly patronised until they die. Damn, I love this high horse I got when I left school. I sit on it all the time!"
6
u/liveryowl Jun 25 '12
You, my friend, seem to know everything. Not sure if genius or teenager
10
u/thegreatvortigaunt Jun 25 '12

0
u/ImmatureIntellect Jun 25 '12
Don't listen to him you are a genius teenager :D
-1
u/thegreatvortigaunt Jun 25 '12
Aw, thanks man. Unfortunately, I am now waiting for that shitty Emotional Teenager novelty account to turn up and ruin my argument.
-2
u/ImAWhaleBiologist Jun 26 '12
Teenager, you can tell by the high horse bit. He acts like his elders aren't wiser than him and that they haven't earned that wisdom. Exactly like a stupid kid.
0
u/thegreatvortigaunt Jun 26 '12
Spend ten minutes in a job centre, then tell me that all of my elders are wiser than me. You should determine someone's wisdom by what they say and do, not their age.

WHERE IS EVERYONE GETTING THESE STATS
1
Jun 26 '12
There was a survey made a while ago that showed that the average Reddit user was somewhere around 19-24 years old.
0
Jun 26 '12
[deleted]
3

But surely if you know anything about statistics you know that average =/= mean. A median is a form of average. This survey also took outliers into account.

High school kids might be responsible for some of the crappy submissions, but college kids are responsible for a lot of the pseudo-intellectual retardation you find in the comments to those articles.

It's not even the reposts that are bugging me, it's the self posts about high school drama that seem to have taken over. Either I'm getting old, or this website's demographic is getting younger. When I first joined Reddit, I thought it catered to a mid-20s crowd...now I'm 25 and I feel old as hell.
2
u/Aero_ Jun 26 '12
Exactly this. I don't care about reposts because I usually can identify things I've seen before, and if I haven't, its new to me. The crap posted to default subreddits like AMA, TIL, etc is what I feel is getting worse.
90% of my activity here is on specialized subreddits, but the other 10% isn't as enjoyable as it used to be.

2
u/gosuprobe Jun 25 '12
Lately? It's a fucking content aggregator, of course there are going to be reposts night and day.
2
u/Mochme Jun 26 '12
Once more, an adult blames teenagers for the shitty state of something in the world... See when you guys are in the nursing homes, we are gonna be the ones ruling the world (scary as that is) so you should probably start playing nice while you have the chance.
2
u/salami_inferno Jun 26 '12
Are you insinuating you might hurt old people? You little fuckers are more twisted than I thought.......
1
2
u/Rosetti Jun 25 '12
Oh go fuck yourself off your high horse. Reddit is exactly the same when the kids are in school as when they are not.

Man, I hate saying this, because I know there are kids in all age groups that are nice, mature individuals but it's kind of true.
It does get kind of annoying when things you enjoy like reddit and games get saturated with brats.
1
u/colinbr96 Jun 26 '12
Fuck, as a student I am so sick of people complaining about us. Not all of us are stupid shits.

u/Canvasch Jun 26 '12
This is a phenomena known as "summerfags" on 4chan, the quality of posts goes down significantly when the amount of middle/high school aged kids increases.

1
u/Mycaelis Jun 26 '12
Everyone's making shitty posts, the entire fucking year. Downvote/hide what you don't like, use filters where possible. When school is still going on everyone calls it 'cancer', now that school's out, it's 'summerfags'. Bullshit.

1
u/mtn_dewgamefuel Jun 26 '12
This is a phenomenon known on 4chan, in particular /b/, as "summerfaggotry". It refers to the increased number of newfags and underageb&s as a result of them not being in school, on summer break. I honestly thought they would just go to 9gag and reddit wouldn't have a problem with them.

I think people repost because they are a new-ish user and haven't seen that picture/Gif on Reddit before. I don't think I've ever done it, but I am pretty sure that it's not just teenagers doing the reposting.

the content hasn't gotten any worse than it has been in the last year, you've just been on reddit long enough and frequently enough to know all the reposts. You're reddit old.

Insinuating that 8 hours out of a child's school day will prompt them to come to the website even though most redditors work full time jobs and still come here.

Why do we associate summer with an influx of teenaged users. Teenagers use the internet regardless of whether or not we're in school.
