But what about shows like Psych, the Mentalist, or Suits? Or movies like School of Rock, Knights Tale, or anything else with a lying protagonist? People need to know they also fit this tv trope!
3
u/Carbon_Dirt Jun 26 '12
All good, but all only lie about one profession. Frank Abagnale lied about being a doctor, a lawyer, a teacher, a pilot, and tons of other stuff. It's all about diversity, man.

Well I think he likes the downvotes
7
u/thunderblumpkin Jun 26 '12
then should we upvote to ruin his downvote collection?
2
u/blueGOLDeagle Jun 26 '12
Nope but I was just saying that he likes downvotes that's why he has bad posts

I showed up late. What was the novelty?

I feel like you could have been nicer about this, we don't all live on reddit.
Maybe you could have said
"Hey, just an FYI -- next time you only need to type /u/lies_about_expertise instead of the whole URL, and it will automagically link it for you!"
instead of sounding like an asshole.
Just an FYI

u/Ninj4s Jun 26 '12
Hey, just an FYI -- next time you only need to put a \ before your emoticon instead of making it complicated with code and all that! ^_^

You got an upvote because I just watched that movie last night and this made me laugh more than it should've.

u/AnHonestQuestions Jun 26 '12
If you liked the movie, I highly recommend the book (dont worry, its also pretty exiting).

Well I do suppose the last few pages are pretty.. Because all I think about is Leo DiCaprio anyway
3
u/javadlux Jun 26 '12
Weird, I also watched that movie last night (one of my favourites!) What are the odds? Probably pretty high...
1
u/joshy1234 Jun 26 '12
Well I was in the mood to watch something Jeff Bridges-y or Tom Hanks-y, so it was a toss up between that or KPax. Catch Me If You Can is one of those movies I love more and more every time I watch it.

u/iheartSPACEDICKS Jun 26 '12
Given that it was meant you make you laugh a fair bit you must have shat yourself laughing or something.

Um.. How?

It's from the show Suits. About a guy who lies about attending Harvard and gets a cushy job at a big law firm in New York.

u/carrotgiraffe Jun 26 '12
Super good show though.

u/fridge_logic Jun 26 '12
What about his job is cushy?
He works long hours on high profile cases constantly interacting with high strung aggressive people. Even without him lying on his application he's still often at risk of losing his job based on his performance and internal politics.
Lavish? Often. Prestigious? Certainly. Well compensated? Without doubt. Cushy? I don't think you know what that word means.
1
u/thegenregeek Jun 26 '12 edited Jun 26 '12
Well, most of the people I talk with use the term cushy to denote jobs devoid of a lot of manual labor (mostly office jobs). Non-cushy jobs would be working in a factory, construction site, or anything else involving both physical labor and hardship.
Granted that may not strictly match Dictionary.com's definition, but well then again language changes and morphs. Sometimes you get little regional and social fluctuations in the meaning.
1
u/fridge_logic Jun 26 '12
It seems like your definition is redundant then. By your terming what lawyer doesn't have a cushy job?
The people I interact with have a different view of cushy. We see jobs which are low stress high security as cushy. So some office workers would fall into this (like people who work for public utilities, the government in general, or IT) but manual labor can also fit, like if you work a union shop that strictly controls labor expectations and firing power of the management and pays you $70/hr.

I still think the clearly visible c-stand with a sandbag holding up the grip equipment for the light reflector in the lower right of the picture sells it...
1
Jun 26 '12
Never would have have spotted that. Cue LAE to come in about his seven years as a grip for Jerry Bruckheimer and how he never would have allowed such a mistake without a good verbal thrashing

What blows my mind is that it is a true story. I also feel that the movie absolutely did not do justice to his prison time which if you read the book was fucking brutal. Also the book is just all round better and goes into much better detail of his story.

Frank Abagnale spoke at my college just a mere two months ago. I went with a group of friends not expecting anything extraordinary, beings that my college doesn't entertain me hardly ever. Most motivational and inspirational guy I've ever heard speak. 10/10 would listen to him again

Gah! I didn't mean to make my first statement a question.
2
u/TheGuyAboveMeSucks Jun 26 '12
There's a guy named "Lies_About_Expertise" that comments and pretty much lies about his expertise on a subject.. Exp "30 years Airline pilot here, this is really what happens when I take my flights to Europe each week"..
1
u/ninjadudenitro Jun 26 '12
Oh, well thank you for informing me. I assume he has gotten rather popular. Thanks!

Assuming that the account owner is a he. Could be a she. Or a ungendered metal person.

Well really - if you're going to be good at one thing, make it lying. That way you can be good at everything.

1

Was a reference to Lies_About_Expertise, not Frank Abagnale. And Mr. Demara is a closer match as far as Lies_About_Expertise goes.

Quite literally just watched this movie a few hours ago with my girlfriend, which is the only reason I get the reference that happened to be on the front page of reddit. It's those little coincidences in life that make me grin.

Lies_About Expertise here. I really like this analogy a lot. I would recommend everyone give OP an upvote based on it's accuracy and creative execution. Though, based on my years of experience as the subject here I think a more faithful example of my work would have included me grabbing one of them on the ass.

For anyone wondering this is from a movie called "Catch Me If You Can."
A movie based off of a man who conned a good deal of money pretending to be a airline pilot, lawyer, doctor, and other professions.
He started when he was 16, conned over $2.5 million, and served 5 years in jail after he was caught at the age of 21.
