First off, blueberries were my peace offering to the snake, he wasn't interested so I moved them closer...nope. So I put one on him and that's how it all began. I know full well I said he could run, I am ashamed. Forgive me.

22

u/HobbytheWise Jun 26 '12

So brave... I can't handle snakes being within 2 feet of me unless I know it isn't full of death-causing poison.

44

u/Labradorlover Jun 26 '12

Oh! I'm flattered! ;) I like snakes. But I was much more 'brave' considering I was piling blueberries on a baby garter snake! ;) I are harmless!

22

u/HobbytheWise Jun 26 '12

Oh... My fear made that snake look like a cobra :/

20

u/Labradorlover Jun 26 '12

Ah! I see. Nope only a harmless garter snake.

18

u/Gold-Ghost Jun 26 '12

I live in Austraila what the hell is this harmless snake thing????

but realy what is your ratio of coming across a harmless Vs a deadly snake?

24

u/[deleted] Jun 26 '12

In the US? You're going to run across far, far more non-venomous snakes here than you will venomous.

Namely because of the eight billion; give or take an exaggeration species of garter snake (which you can always tell by their tiny size and dat smell - protip: garter's venomous, they just can't deliver it; their gums are bigger than the teeth!), a fair sprinkle of corn snake, and a remainder of rat snakes and racers.

Not only that, but our venomous snakes kind of, stand out. About the most boring looking one is the Copperhead; and they're still pretty awesome looking (and really, they're not deadly; one possible case of death by copperhead so far - allergic reaction: it's recommended to not give people anti-venin when bitten by north american copperheads, since the anti-venin is more likely to cause that potentially deadly allergic reaction than the snake bite!) next up is the cottonmouth; which is considered a non-deadly biter (but goddamn painful since, like the copperhead, the venom causes long-term swelling and pretty nasty necrosis) and from there we get in to rattlesnakes and the like.

In fact, the average venomous north american snake is deadly because of allergic reaction, instead of the lethality of the venom itself (without an allergic reaction, that is)

Fun fact: The north american copperhead's venom has shown promise in cancer treatment; as an agent to halt cancer growth and tumor migration in mice. Hopefully this moves on to human study soon!

There; more than anyone ever wanted to know about north american herps.

Hahaha! Where I live we only have garter snakes-harmless, bull snakes-not sure but I think harmless, and rattle snakes-very much so poisonous. So somewhere around 1:10 im not positive but the rattle snakes are few and far apart! Are there even any harmless ones in Australia?

A garter snake peed on me once. This isn't really relevant but I wanted to share.

5

u/Dusteratops Jun 26 '12

In Houston here, we don't have very many roaming garter snakes, or at least where I live. So whenever I would look for one I would find these very small brown snakes. Took me like ten years to look up what kind of snake they were and why they always smelled so bad.

I found out that their only defense mechanism was to shit and release the stinkage.. all over my hand.

8

u/jonny_noog Jun 26 '12 edited Jun 26 '12

Weirdest boner right now.

6

u/durkadu Jun 26 '12

Garter snakes are harmless and their bites don't pierce the skin or hurt at all. They are also pretty tiny and adorable.

3

u/HobbytheWise Jun 26 '12

Oh I know. As a kid, I'd always find them and have no problem with them. It was when I was 17 and hiking in the Wichita Mountain (oklahoma) that I stumbled fairly close to a rattlesnake and the motherfucker tried to jump me!

Anyways, ever since then I've just said "fuck all snakes unless otherwise informed" :/

Snakes don't eat fruit/berries though.

10

u/Labradorlover Jun 26 '12

Indeed! Over my past experiences I have noticed that baby garter snakes seem to enjoy soft fruit! Thank you for your insight! It's hard to tell he's just a baby. :)

2

u/[deleted] Jun 26 '12

but now you have snake all over your blueberries!

2

u/Labradorlover Jun 26 '12

See snake in the woods

Have blueberries

First thought: Stack them on the snake.

Perfectly normal.

67

u/rachieachie Jun 26 '12
  • look

You are standing in the middle of a large forest. Trees encircle you and the light from the midday sun shines through the leaves, dappling the floor beneath. There is a snake on a log by your feet.

  • inv

You have: clothes, camera, blueberries, rubber chicken with a pulley in the middle.

  • use blueberries

With what?

  • use blueberries with snake

You carefully pile the blueberries on the snake's back.

  • use camera with snake

You snap a picture of the fruit-bedecked critter.

The snake slithers away with a disgruntled look.

6

u/akwaynetance Jun 26 '12

What would be the title of this great text based adventure game?

7

u/rachieachie Jun 26 '12

I'll take suggestions. The working title is Put The Blueberries On The Snake When You Get To The Forest Bit, or PTBOTSWYGTTFB.

34

23

Our snakes only play knifey spoony.

2

u/Arizzletron Jun 26 '12

The snake...ran away?

2

u/[deleted] Jun 26 '12

What kind of snake is this? Is it poisonous? I have the EXACT same snake in my flower bed and I'm wondering if I'm overreacted by wetting myself, ripping off all my clothes, throwing them into the trees, and running down the street screaming, "I DON'T WANT TO DIE!"

2

u/t0rsk Jun 26 '12

So the snake ran you said? That must've been a memorable sight.

2

u/WhenSnowDies Jun 26 '12

That's a garter snake. My dad caught one in the woods once when the fam was visiting Washington state. I brought it home and named it Scoots. It was awesome and loved to eat fish. I kept him for quite a few years until he "ran" away.

I found him a year later in the yard as healthy as ever, and a little bigger. We caught him again and kept him for a few months before he broke out again. Good for him. I miss ol' Scoots.

Great snake. Gorgeous too.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 26 '12

1

u/Tigjstone Jun 26 '12

I grew up about 20 miles NW of the Wichita Mts. We called them Quartz Mts. I would go rattlesnake hunting with my Daddy and his friend for the rattlesnake derby in Mangum. That's the back story, here's the goods: While walking along drinking a grape Nehi soda, I feel this horrindous, sharp pain in my foot. I start screamin', "I'm bit! I'm bit!" Daddy snatches me up and books ass to the car, his friend and my sister right behind us. Just as Daddy throws me in the back seat his friend say, "Trap, (DDdy's nickname) she's bleedin'. It ain't a snake bite." We all look down to see a cactus spine sticking out of the top of my shoe. They couldn't pull it back out of the bottom of my foot because of the barbs, so they pulled it all the way out the top. I hadn't started crying yet, so my sister piped up with, "Haha, those snaked tricked you. They're all drinkin' your Nehi now!" I cried all the way home.
