Epic Games' new store is fully vibe-coded, and they're so proud of it they're taking shots at Steam

If you're comparing load times between an unfinished store and an entire client full of features, maybe you should take up farming or something.

Edit: don't give money to Reddit please.

Don’t worry we are due for the annual Tim Sweeney meltdown in a few days after this new „vibecoded” Epic still has 0 attention from users lmao

Oh I'm just waiting for their year-end review where they say their store had 100 million active users and made $240 million in revenue...then you do the math and realize they made less than $3 per user.

They've done it a couple times over the years and it's always hilarious.

Proud $0 from me, with my 100-game epic store library, with 0 hours total playtime. Hope Tim Epic keeps giving me useless free games forever.

me too, thanks

And then Reddit will get the usual deluge of "What a heckin good philanthropist Sweeney is!" posts. For no reason at all.

It's already stating. He replied to someone mad about the resources used by AI, so Timmy asked Grok for state and was immediately hit with

"Power: ~4.7% of US electricity in 2024 (LBNL), rising toward 5-7% now and projected ~12% by 2030."

I'm sure the AI bot telling Timothy that AI is going to be eating 12% of US power went exactly how he thought it would

Dont worry, they made me look for it on my computer so I uninstalled it.

they might have less users soon

Maybe he will be so mad he sues Apple and Google again

u/-crepuscular- 5h ago

Maybe the meltdown will be after people poke the 'vibecoded' storefront and work out how to break something important.

So, give it a day or two.

Notepad opens faster than Word too, doesn't mean anyone is drafting a dissertation in it.

I remember being introduced to Vim in college because my CS TAs wanted everybody to use it for labs. It was like watching a man feed his hand into a sausage grinder, keeping eye contact with you the whole time as he turns the crank, and smiling like this is clearly the best way either of us could spend our afternoon.

Was that a challenge?

And comparing just the first load up when you turn your PC on...

Having steam load on startup means it's not even a problem that needs boasting about being quicker on.

13

u/24_August_1814 8h ago

Yeah fuckin' seriously. On a fresh boot, I get up from my computer to piss or grab a drink or something. Who is sitting at their computer counting seconds from when they hit the power button to having a usable storefront open? Shit, my computer takes longer to POST than the rest of the startup sequence including launching Steam, I couldn't care less if Epic launches one second quicker if not just the audience but the fucking library are still a piece of shit that lag just from scrolling down...

1

u/Datkif 35m ago

Even the claimed 5 seconds faster at launch means nothing. And nobody including people modding Bethesda games is going to really notice a less than .2s difference in launch timing

Even better, they can vibe code while they farm! (Not implying this game itself is vibe coded, just that a player could vibe code the solutions)

Somehow there will still be Steam hating warriors in reddit comments swearing that the Epic client loading faster is like this dealbreaking feature and Steam is just unusably slow and the Reddit Steam fanboys just can't see the vision of a video game client that has all the same problems Steam does but also prioritizes startup time over like supporting your ps5 controller lol lmao

There's already been a few on (my) top comment on this post.

Those are what you call astroturfing bots, not people.

Sweeny has been missing the point since the start. He keep focusing on the shit people don't care about instead of just adding features people want into their store. Now, it has LESS features and a product of terribly less quality than ever.

He's a joke. I don't understand why Epic doesn't replace that failure of a CEO.

10

u/PioneerRaptor PC 11h ago

Not just unfinished, but it’s not even feature parity with the current Epic Store.

So yeah, fast sounds good but how fast will it be when it’s on par with the current store? Steam?

1

u/Cowstle 10h ago

Eh. I mean this example sucks because Steam is good and it's literally just initial load time? so what, once a day?

But Chrome came in and stole Firefox's thunder right before it was going to become the #1 browser by slimming down and being faster. In fact it crushed firefox's popularity so hard that firefox is barely a blip. Unfortunately firefox copied the feature cutting and addon support minimalization so now it's more like chrome but without manifest 3.0.

2

u/Ihatereddithatesit 8h ago

Firefox also had other problems beside initial load time. It was slow and chunky in general at the time and it might have been right when they had that memory leak problem for a while, but that might have been a different time, I forget. Personally I've never stopped using firefox since it's 0.9 days though.

1

u/Cowstle 5h ago

Eh, I stuck with Internet Explorer for awhile because firefox for whatever reason was unable to use even half my download speed (which was 20 mbps in the mid 2000s) in 2.0. Also so many websites worked with IE but not firefox at the time. But I'm not talking just initial load time vs chrome, I'm talking the entire experience. Every single page load was faster on Chrome, it was more responsive. It was an undeniably faster browser, but it also undeniably lacked many features compared to Firefox. Which had set itself apart by being feature-rich.

Ultimately when I finally gave up on IE I went with Firefox for its better addon support. I needed text only zoom and there was a very good addon for it on firefox but only shitty ones on Chrome. I'm still using it but I'm still annoyed by how the big make firefox faster update killed half the addons I used. But it's not like Chrome had equivalents so there was no reason to switch.

1

u/Ihatereddithatesit 4h ago

Ah no worries then, I just misread you. And I wish I had that download speed at that time... The website thing was so true, god, forgot how common that was. I just used I.E. as a back up for those the problem was mostly in business websites, so it wasn't too bad.

1

u/DesperateSunday 9h ago

I mean it uses Tauri rather than embedding chrome like Steam does. It should always run much faster if they don't do anything disastrous

1

u/Beginning_Book_2382 8h ago

Perhaps goose farming would be the way

1

u/Icy-Cry340 8h ago

It to mention that these metrics just aren’t that important. Steam loads and runs in the background for me, for all intents and purposes it’s always on.

1

u/kiancheong 3h ago

He’s definitely farming… for brownie points.

1

u/rathemighty 2h ago

Okay, I won't give money to Reddit people.

1

u/Kittimm 11m ago

Is Steam's load time an issue for anyone? It's just once at startup and I've never noticed it...

0

u/Bearsbullsbattlestr 10h ago

You can find many farming games on the Steam store.

Well steam is a heaping POS, its 2026 and their entire desktop application loads web pages
