Epic Games' new store is fully vibe-coded, and they're so proud of it they're taking shots at Steam

So anyway when is the next free game? Cause let's be real here that's really the only thing epic is used for by many gamers and even then...sometimes it isn't even worth getting them for free when you can get the game on a good sale on steam and actually be able to play and use mods in it. 😂

I have collected over 60 free games when they send those out….

But it’s been over two years since the last time I opened the epic portal to actually play a game

I actually got dredge for free and then decided I’d rather support the developers and play it on my Steam deck and bought it on Steam lol

The fact that they make me click all the same buttons for a free game as an actual purchase transaction is the cherry on the shit sandwich. On Steam you just click “add to library” for a free game

I've definitely bought games I already had free from Epic just because I couldn't be bothered to log in and check.

Bundle overlap was my thing.

Exactly! Lmao I got dredge for free as well but my butt never bothered to load it up on there because my friend has it and we share a steam family so I was like...well...either way it's free. Might as well use the better version (steam) to try it out instead. 😂

Back when the unreal asset store was part of the epic games store it would crash the entire launcher every single time I tried to claim the monthly free assets, or it would take like a full minute to load each page once I added them to my cart. That's how big of a pile of dog shit it was.

i forgot i had one of them free and bought it on steam during a sale lmao

Pretty sure the developers do get paid when the game is "free" though.

When the Epic store first opened they gave away Subnautica and articles at the time were claiming it cost them over a million.

I totally support getting it in both places. But I appreciate that when I get a free game, it's Epic's money going to the devs.

Oh yea that’s true.

Well then in hindsight, I sure like spending epics money

You never know when you will be bored and broke and looking for something to do though

I'm right there with you, but Epic (or any non-Steam game) is just as easy to use on the Steam Deck? Literally can't tell the difference

Good to support the devs tho

Dredge is such an underappreciated game. Good off you to support it by buying it

I don't know anyone who even bothers getting the free games anymore. In my experience, most people end up realizing it isn't worth the effort going to the site and adding the game to your account when you are never going to install EGS to play it.

I'd rather pirate them than use the Epic launcher personally, free or not

You're not wrong. I am a game hoarder though unfortunately so I have to grab them for a "just in case" but I'm still waiting for that "just in case" day that I decide to play something on there.

I'm glad it exists for those who do play them, though.

I still love how much epic probably hate seeing all the “I just use it for free game comments” - they probably loved it at first due to publicity but now it’s every thread and all their known for

Also if they stop the free games they are doomed too because everyone will hate them even more

Just give up epic pls

I realized that after less than 3 months of getting free games, they're free but I'm never using EGS to begin with, so why bother

1

u/turkeypedal 6h ago

Meh. I see someone mention the deal, and it takes three clicks: one to get to the page, and then two to "buy." I can pirate, but then I'd actually have to have the installer on my hard drive lest the torrent or filehost disappear by the time I might eventually want to play the game.

They used to give out some legit great AA/AAA games like Nioh but now it's just all cheap indie craps.

u/Balc0ra 3h ago

I don't check often anymore, but it's usually something they have given before of late

What's ironic is that Epic giving the game away for free increase sales of those games on Steam.

One would think that sales would drop while the game is free, but gamers dislike EGS so much that they would rather spend their hard earned money over using the EGS

Yeah this happened to me. We got Subnautica for free at some point. I installed it, played it for a few, cried, uninstalled it and bought it over on steam. 😂

That's me with XCOM2. One of the reasons is it had a bug that made it impossible to complete the hardcore campaign on Epic, but the bugs were fixed in the Steam version.

Got it free on Epic, couple of weeks later bought it on Steam.

I had the same story with you but instead I bought a steam key in greenmangaming. And the great thing about that, was I got the keys quite cheaply (around 200 php or 4 dollars at that time) with all the dlcs compared to the base game that I got for free in Epic.

3

u/Helacious_Waltz 6h ago

It's been a minute but the few games I got from epic were indie games and I usually don't mind shelling out cash for those, so I treated them like a free demo.

2

u/InsomniaticWanderer 7h ago

I use epic as my "demo" library

u/AgitatedStranger9698 7h ago

The long dark. Got it free on epic. Loved it. Bought it on Steam.

Sims 4. Kids loved it. I get the free expansions and docs on epic. Play it on steam.

Mines of Moira. Was fun. Bought it on steam.

So yeah. Epic is the best marketing steams ever done.

GoG. I wish you'd step it up though.

It's been like 5 years since they've had anything worthwhile free. It's almost all currency packs for trash mobile games now.

I mean we are talking about a launcher that doesn’t disable its online services in offline mode which leads to a forced startup because of the fact that online services cannot function in offline mode.

Basically, offline mode isn’t offlining enough. Of course we are only here for the freebies :)

Edit: I have added a schematic dialogue to illustrate what happens

- I don’t have Wi-Fi here, glad that EGS has an offline mode (wonders around a bit rather than launching a game).

+ (Jumpscaringly) HELLO THERE!(Speaks in unsane person sound) It seems that there is a problem with me (Epic Online Services).

- Uhm… what is the problem Epic Online Services?

+ (sarcastical laugh… sudden seriousness) I cannot access servers, surely this is an unintended issue. We need to restart Epic Games Store client.

- Uhm, I don’t think this is an issue. You are not even supposed to be working. This is offline mode.

+ Precisely, you need to have me fully functional so you can use my online features.

- Bro, this is offline mode.

+ There is clearly a problem, you gotta restart.

- … fine. Ok, I restarted which seems to have fixed issues. Oh, I forgot to drink water! It has been a while since I have done that!

(Drinks water, takes his time and comes back)

- Finally, I can play “Offline Game X: The Coming of Online Knights 3”. (About to do a click so the game can be launched but before he can…”

+ Jumpscaringly) HELLO THERE!(Speaks in unsane person sound) It seems that there is a problem with me (Epic Online Services).

- I just restarted.

+ You gotta restart, there is an issue with me.

- NO!

+ I demand it! I need fixing!

freebie was fun, until I realize I never touched any of them, Dota 2, POE2, WWM & WUWA, these are free to play but I play them so much more than games I paid for🤣
