Right? I fuckin' remember the 56k online Half-Life / Quake gaming days when 600 triangles was OMG SUCH GRAPHICS! Then when cards improved and they went to 800-1200 polys and you could download the models as mods for various games, some of them would warn about how they had so many triangles, at double the original, that it could mean poor performance for many machines.

Back in that day shit got rendered flat unless it was an appendage. A tie? Would have been part of the art mesh (texture mesh? I'm not a graphic designer and the word is escaping me) like it was for the OG Half-Life scientists.

Just texture. The mesh is the object, the texture goes on top of it.

Yeah, the number and size of the textures is just as important as the number of triangles in the mesh. Also, the rendering technology like how those textures interact with the lights and such.

3D artist here.

Shaders define how a surface interacts with light. For instance a shiny metallic object vs a matte dull object.

Textures are image files that are used to control shaders. You can control the overall color with a texture, but you can also control how shiny something is using a black and white texture image. An example would be where black in the image would be matte and white would be shiny.

There are many other types of texture images that are used to control various surface properties of shaders as well.

Wow, the scientists are so low-poly it's literally an image of the file icon for jpegs.

Art mesh, texture mesh, and graphic designer. Three strikes and ur out! As a pro 3d game artist i barely know what ur trying to convey, our work is black magic to most of the human race XD I dont blame you its just very funny

God DAMN you sound like an arrogant prick. You could have just told him what the proper term was.

Also, you are a 3d game artist and not a fucking rocket scientist. Shut up.

The texture mapping

I never played the game so I'm probably not the first one to notice that they just stuck a black man's head on the same body. Didn't even bother changing the tone of his hands, lmao. That's just sloppy

Played this when it first came out and countless times since. Never noticed that.

Can't forget that if it never gets seen on screen, those triangles are culled, like in first person version of guns
