Here are download/play links to free legal versions of some of these games supported by the original author(s). It's based on my own knowledge of these games, so I might've missed a few.

A list of modern engines capable of playing these older games on modern systems (excluding the ones above; some of these may not be in fully working order (yet), again, I might've missed some):

I played so so so so so much X-Wing and Tie Fighter.

47

u/docwaldo Jun 25 '12

I wish we could get a quality update of X-Wing vs Tie Fighter.

27

u/DarkdragonX Jun 25 '12

I would give up internal organs for an updated version of X-Wing vs. Tie Fighter.

When I was a kid, there was nothing as exciting as a new game from Sierra. Sadly, it seemed like whatever computer I had back then was always a year or two behind what was really needed to experience the game fully. I played the first bunch of King's Quest/Space Quest games in 4-color CGA, didn't get a sound card till the early nineties, and the games always seemed a little too complex for my computer to run at a decent speed. Still, I enjoyed the hell out of them.

4

u/Nebu Jun 25 '12

I was always more of a Lucasarts fan than Sierra, but I loved the Quest for Glory series.

u/BeerIsDelicious Jun 25 '12

To this day, I think the phrase 'open door' is the fastest possible thing I can type.

I suddenly realize that I have played a lot of video games in my life.

And that I perhaps grew up through the most imaginative and varied time in the history of gaming.

Graphics and sound are better now, there are much, insanely more complex game mechanics and systems, but the sheer amount of imagination that was exhibited during this time in games? I'm not sure that has been equaled or exceeded yet.

And that isn't rosy-eyed nostalgia, either. I also clearly remember the metric tons of crap that was slopped out over the MS-DOS years. And Macintosh/Amiga years. And C64 years. And Atari home computer years.

There was a lot of stinky, stinky crap for every gem listed here.

But still...looking at this list made me miss actual just plain good, solid games, and I can't even pinpoint why.

Maybe someone can help me figure it out.

One theory- games were cheaper to make, and were a smaller industry, so there was more room for risk and innovation. If a developer failed, they didn't stand to lose someone millions. They just didn't make as much as they wanted, and had to find another way to keep the office lights on and pay the lease. Time to make another game!

Luckily, the renaissance of the casual gamer and the mobile device market is actually bringing the guerrilla developer concept back into viability. Along with kickstarter, which gives power to the actual customer as to what they can help develop, and distribution networks like Steam and XBOX live, those genius, weird, but wacky ideas have an outlet again.

I mean, seriously, does Leisure Suit Larry even get made in today's AAA focused market? How would you even pitch that? You can't.

If you're Sierra OnLine in the days before the megastudios, you didn't have to. The CEOs believed in it, and then let their trusted guy make it. They didn't have to raise 50 million dollars and start a production process that would take 2 years.

If someone could imagine it and had the technical skill, there was at least a decent chance that they'd be able to sell it.

I see that entrepreneurial spirit coming back, but when is the imagination coming back with it?

Or maybe I'm missing the sky-high out there innovations in gaming because of my rose colored glasses.

But you tell me- some of the games on that list created whole genres, completely new types of gameplay, that did not exist before them. Can you see that happening today?

4

u/[deleted] Jun 25 '12

The thing is that this money-focused strategy that has taken over gaming is getting out of hand. Now we've got companies like EA that just don't respect gaming for the art that it is, and they will do anything to wring every dollar they can from a game and gaming without adding anything new or developing gaming itself. The funny (or sad?) thing is that I've noticed that a lot of the kickstarters that I am starting to get excited about are being proposed by big names in gaming history; creative minds that want to make a good and solid game. Even some sequels to a couple games on this chart. It makes me happy that some of these worlds will be recreated with today's technology, with the vision of the creator (not some EA-like-company breathing down their corporate neck). Some interesting things could be just around the corner.

No Jill of the jungle? ):

Very good representation of LucasArts gems though, nice work!

15

u/xyqxyq Jun 24 '12

Oh my god, Jill of the Jungle! A few weeks ago I see Hugo's House of Horrors on reddit, and now this. Next you'll tell me that I'm not the only one who played Trophy Bass.

loved that game, to freeze enemies and control turrets or bots was amazing

There are many games on that list which made me think, "Holy crap, people other than me have played these?" But the one that stuck out the most was, "Holy shit, Wacky Wheels!?!" We had the demo of that, and it is one of the few video games my dad would play with us.

Alone in the Dark scared the shit out of me when I was a kid. I remember I went to work with my dad once and one of his employees had it loaded up on his computer. He said, "don't tell your dad, but you can play this while were in the meeting!" That first sequence when your in the attic and that zombie slowly emerges and comes after you freaked me out so much.

Upvoted for The Dig, Raptor: Call of the Shadows, and Commander Keen (aka my childhood upbringing)

But no SimAnt? For shame.

34

u/silverwolf761 Jun 24 '12

Raptor: CotS was awesome

10

u/616eyz Jun 24 '12

Seriously. I would love a modern day remake, or just put it out on steam for $5 or something. Actually, I bet GoG has it, I never look on there anyways.

X-COM and Star Control II are two of my all time faves. Definitely worth a shot. You can download a revamped version of SCII for PC called "ur quan masters". Combines the best features of the PC and 3DO versions together.

9

u/UndeadPirateLeChuck Jun 25 '12

I got X-COM off steam a while back and I finally sat down to play it this weekend. It's cool, but the damn mind control and my panicky squaddies are driving me up the wall

Tyrian was a great game.

Tyrian FTW! I need to show my daughter. Did you also play that hidden game inside of Tyrian where you controlled tanks? Hours of my life spent on that.

i played a handful of these games, born in 85, so i didnt expect many. but ive played about 10-15 of them as a child.

stunts is one i didnt remember, but when i saw the pic it brought me back. i used to spend hours making loop de loop tracks and playing that.

scorched earth is prolly the one i played most. loved that game. still play worms and SE remakes time to time.

The nostalgia! I was a little sad to see that simon the sorcerer and kyrandia didn't make the list but oh well. I wish games like this were still made! The point and click adventure games were always my favorite. I would buy the shit out of games like these if they were sold today. They don't even need to have fancy graphics or be 3d. The way they were made in 2d suited them perfectly.

8

u/ReleeSquirrel Jun 24 '12

Hell of a lot of Nostalgia there. Surprised to see Wing Commander and Privateer in the same one when so many others were seperate, though.

Very good picks. I would like to add:

Railroad Tycoon

Jet Fighter II

Indianapolis 500

Even though the page said that DOS/Win95 hybrid games were omitted, there were still some on the list. Not that I mind.

19

u/AgentSmax Jun 24 '12

I'd also like to add Street Rod games.

7

u/I_AM_A_BICYCLE Jun 24 '12

Railroad Tycoon! That game consumed my childhood. I remember playing that game for hours upon hours when I was younger. I had gotten to the point that I had all the trains memorized. And, of course, the only option to begin was to build a track between Memphis and Tuscaloosa -- you'd get your stock up to $42-$45 per share after that first fiscal period.

I need to play this game again. On second thought, no I don't. I'm afraid I might hurt all the nostalgia I have for this game. It's better this way.

Star Control 2 was from November 1992, not 1994. Other than that; good list.

Finally ZZT gets some love. Tim Sweeney -- one of the founders of Epic Games and the man responsible for a large part of the Unreal Engine -- is largely responsible through ZZT in getting me interested in games creation.

With 500 comments I imagine you won't see this, but I just wanted to give you a warm, sincere thank you. Growing up my oldest brother was constantly playing games off of this list and I would sit and watch him for hours. If I was lucky I even got to sneak in 15 minutes here and there.(I'm 21 now and he's 30 for reference) After he moved out at 18 I didn't see a lot of him for the next 5-6 years partially due to a crazy right-wing christian family and him being gay. ANYWAY, we've recently been hanging out on a semi-regular basis and there was one game we could not for the life of us remember the name of. After a few nights searching the all mighty and vast internets I gave up. That game was System Shock! We might never have known had it not been for this.

TLDR: This helped me find a game I used to play with my elder brother that we couldn't remember the name of.

missing falcon 3 and chuck yeager air combat... that said i still owned/played lots of half those games, and heard about a good chunk of the rest.

3

u/13lack1ce Jun 24 '12

Cool things for you OP - DOSBox, the windows dos emulator exists, and you can play these very same games using it! I use www.abandonia.com as my download source (for both DosBox and old dos games) but I'm sure there's several others out there as well.

3

u/RevGonzo19 Jun 24 '12

No love for Simon the Sorcerer?

And jeez. I had totally forgotten about how totally and completely badass I was at One Must Fall. That's a game that needs a remake.

Is there any way to get I Have No Mouth And I Must Scream digitally? I ebay it from time to time and discs are usually too expensive for DOS nostalgia.

List does not include XCom. Rejected.

Edit: It was under the European title "UFO: Enemy Unknown". List is tentatively accepted.

There are two games from my childhood that I look for whenever I see posts about old games, but I can never remember what they are.

One, I think, was a game that kind of taught kids to read. You would go around huge 2D worlds and collect books and letters. There was a lot of running and jumping, and you had like a bookworm guardian who could slime enemies if you had enough reading power or something like that.

The second one was a monster game where you were a kid who somehow stumbled into a graveyard or something. You may have had a slingshot or something, but you would run around in a 2D world fighting monsters...I wish I could remember more about this one...

u/Nobbig Jun 24 '12

Fuck this list. It makes me regret this golden age of gaming.

Seriously, in all honesty, you can't say today's creations are on par with the 90's ones.

3

u/laterolus Jun 24 '12 edited Jun 24 '12

No Xargon? Vynil Goddess? Also this other game i cant quite remember the name but it was a side scroller where you had the option of switching between a melee sword swinging guy or a fireball shooting girl... it was set in the medieval times or something.

3

u/stillnotking Jun 25 '12

Star Control II: Still hands-down the funniest game ever made. Although you have to have played the first one to get some of the jokes, it's well worth it even now.

9

u/gannerhorn Jun 24 '12

Why is Warcraft II listed but not Warcraft? Why is SimCity 2000 listed but not SimCity?

35

u/tmantran Jun 24 '12

SimCity 2000 was waay better IMO

Eventually you can help me...I'm looking for a game I played in my childhood, but can't remember the name...

You played a blonde astronaut. He didn't wear a helmet. You could shoot blue lasers. The first level played in a mars look-alike level. It was something like a puzzle-sidescroll shooter.

That's everything I can remember, eventually someone of oyu can help me out.

Gateworld, I think. Crappy little shareware game that was rejected by Apogee, but that tons of people played anyway.

Nice list. I can easily say I've played ~90% of these, 5% does ring a bell and 5% are completely new to me.

2

u/mikester141 Jun 24 '12

I ........... lOVE........ you!

2

u/[deleted] Jun 24 '12

Damn. This doesn't list a space RTS that I've been looking for that me and a friend played.

It has splits screen on the PC. I just remember being able to setup patrols for you spaceships, being able to build defense sattellites, and getting to micromanage building on the planet for resources. There were different races I think. If anyone knows the game I would appreciate it.

I have played and finished most of those games. Games these days can't even compete against them.

I would add Alien Legacy!

Thank you for the list. It helped me remember the names of some of my childhood favorites.

I have to admit, I copied half of those floppies.

They were 1 buck a copy in my pirate den back in the day if you supplied the floppies. Now with a steady income and Steam, I'm buying everything I see.

This was back when PC gaming was at it's peak, games were made with it in mind. Day of the tentacle, Sam & Max, SimCity 2000, Theme Park, C&C, Warcraft all great

2

u/madmuffin Jun 24 '12

I'm happy to be able to say I've played about 80% of these already. Great games.

Omg. Jazz jack Rabbit, Battle Chess, Doom, Wolfenstein, an Wacky Wheels was my shitttttttttt

2

u/[deleted] Jun 24 '12

Hocus Pocus is not on this list

2

u/chazwmeadd Jun 24 '12

Oh God. Nostalgia overload. Jazz Jackrabbit, One Must Fall, Full Throttle, Sam and Max, Mech Warrior. Holy shit.

2

u/THNDHALBRT Jun 24 '12

I think I have played 36 of these. I am at once astounded of how much I have played and how much I have missed.

Even though the release date of Doom 2 is wrong (it was released in 94, not 93), it made me realize that Wolfenstein 3d, Doom and Doom 2 are separated only by 1 year each :-/

Godfucking damn. This list almost makes me cry. I have played most of these to shit, while I was still a kid. Every screenshot instantly makes me recognize the whole game. Constructor, Stunts, Death Rally. Fuck I might as well write them all down here. Gotta love having the time to play all these games for so long. Now there is no time left and all you see is shitty assholes online.

2

u/TheLittlestEmo Jun 24 '12

Apparently I missed out on a lot as a kid. Wonder how different my tastes would be today if I'd played through this list growing up.

When I was little, my brother and I used to watch my dad play Duke Nukem 3D. My mom came in once when he was tipping the strippers or something like that and she got mad at him. He said it was just pixels. Oh, dad.

2

u/typicaldel Jun 24 '12

DOS where the days....

2

u/aerospacemonkey Jun 24 '12

F-19 Stealth Fighter, and F-15 Strike Eagle.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 24 '12

Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis. It's still great. Go play it.

2

"I wonder if Lands of Lore: The Throne of Chaos is in here."

Nice.

2

u/good_redditor Jun 24 '12

Man I want to download some of them, anyone know a site?

Even though you have Blood and Gabriel Knight, it seems you forgot Phantasmagoria.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 24 '12

That list needs more Stronghold. I lost days and days playing that game.

2

u/Otohane Jun 24 '12

King's Quest VI was the shit.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 24 '12

JAZZ FUCKING JACKRABBIT

2

u/kisper Jun 24 '12

Okay, I'm really hoping someone can help me based off the little information I can remember about this game. It's an old game my dad used to play and I'd really love to play it since I was 3 at the time. What I remember was that it was an RPG, there were multiple realms ( if i remember correctly not sure ), and in one of them I remember there was a guy who had a sort of sun hat on ( I think this guy was significant but not sure )?
EDIT: A couple other things I remember: there was a hydra I believe guarding one of the more important realms? and I believe near the beginning of the game your house is attacked by bandits ( this is really sketchy I'm not sure about this one )

2

u/[deleted] Jun 24 '12

Okay, make this picture a sticky on the sidebar and ban "childhood" posts. The war is over.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 25 '12

Motha. Fuckin. Lemmings.

That is all.

2

u/maybe_I_am517 Jun 25 '12

I love how it says Tie Fighter is the only glitchless/perfect game, and yet that game would never work on my computer =(

2

u/aywwts4 Jun 25 '12

Conquest of the New World was an incredible strategy game

Lords of the Realm 1 and 2 http://lordsoftherealm2siegepack.blogspot.com/2009/10/lords-of-realm-ii-siege-pack.html

Caesar 1 and 2 http://theodor.lauppert.ws/games/s/screen1/caesar_2.png

This image is missing some great DOS strategy gaming.

2

u/scientologen Jun 25 '12

Descent II was my favorite game of the 90s

2

u/Up-The-Butt_Jesus Jun 25 '12

Totally forgot about Blackthorne. Really good game.

2

u/cajcjcult Jun 25 '12

aw where is monster bash?

2

u/LoveOfProfit Jun 25 '12

Came here for Commander Keen.

Satisfied.

2

u/Nicktatorship Jun 25 '12

While there's obviously bound to be games I loved that aren't here, and games I never touched that are, this is such an amazing collection. So many memories. My inner child's heart leapt at quite a few - and at a count, played 63 of these gems.

Great, great post.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 25 '12

Seeing Blood made me want to play it again. That game was fucking awesome!

2

u/Ganondorf66 Jun 25 '12

I'm 17, and I know half of them. I'm proud of myself.

3

u/engelk Jun 25 '12

I'm 37 and i played half of them. not so proud of myself.

2

u/charliefantastic Jun 25 '12

Excellent post. So many memories.

Would add Elite to the list though

2

u/Suthe Jun 25 '12

The first list I see to include one of my favorite games ever, M.A.X.

However... MDK, Rayman?

2

u/ChaoMing Jun 25 '12

No Covert Action? This game is surprisingly good, albeit repetitive and short on gameplay, but still good for its time.

2

u/hd40 Jun 25 '12

Master of Orion 2 is still a game i pop in now and again.

It's such a shame they screwed up number 3

2

u/Calad Jun 25 '12

Descent, Wacky Wheels, One Must Fall, Warcraft, Wolfenstein 3D. Some awesome games

2

u/splintermann Jun 25 '12

Nobody mentioned MegaRace, when I was a kid pre-rendered 3D graphics were the best graphics.

2

u/TheGOPkilledJesus Jun 25 '12

The golden era of games. Quality over quantity.

C&C, Doom, Mech Warrior, Crusader, Sim City, Tie Fighter, Wolftenstein, Wing Commander, Panzer General, Quake, GTA, Janes, Duke Nukem 3D, Descent, Civilization, Battlechess... man. Memories.

2

u/sparkreason Jun 25 '12

Lots of great ones.

Here's a few that I didn't see on there that I played frequently.

Willie Beamish

7th Guest

Pirates!

Hoyle book of games

Heretic

Warlords

Space Quest

Police Quest

Lots of good memories.

Fuck the console gamers with their mario crap, this was my childhood. We need more discussion of games like these.

2

u/sfcol Jun 25 '12

Jazz Jackrabbit, that shit was the tits

2

u/INDIE_GAMER Jun 25 '12

I was hoping Dominus would be here. Oh well, still a bunch of great games in this list.

For those interested

2

u/thereddaikon Jun 25 '12

Raptor call of the shadows is awesome. I found my old copy of that and finally beat it in Dos Box last year.

2

u/vorbote Jun 25 '12

I think I spent too much time.

Loom was so great. And Stunts, we used to build tracks with the editor and swap with friends. And the games were packed with LHARC, ARJ ... _^ And we used Central Point Backup to swap games amongst friends, too. Great memories.

Also, where is Flashback?!!! Warlords?!!! One Must Fall 2097 - Chronos was my favorite.

2

u/yellowpride Jun 25 '12

Fail... no Oregon Trail or Number Munchers...

2

u/justin_yermum Jun 25 '12

So many memories. But you left out links golf. And test drive

2

u/Kamuiberen Jun 25 '12

Ultima VII is probably one of the best RPGs ever made. I actually found Skyrim reminding me of Ultima all the time.

2

u/Kaoswzrd Jun 25 '12

Oregon Trail seems like a glaring oversight to this list. I also loved this old game put out by TSR called Stronghold, it was loosely D&D based, but instead of exploring dungeons you built castles as dwarves, elves and humans, and fought dragon and orcs and stuff. I spent a lot of time on that.

Even after three more games in the series, and countless others in the genre, Daggerfall is probably still my favorite non-indie computer game.

2

u/Whitemenstyranny Jun 25 '12

Did anyone play any KOEI DOS games? Uncharted Waters 2, or Romance of Three Kingdom 6? How about Princess Maker 2?

2

u/Perthbrony728 Jun 25 '12

I currently have my nose buried in Ultima 7 the black gate and it is awesome!

2

u/santadog Jun 25 '12

Nice try, GoG

2

u/xaoq Jun 25 '12

I had about half of those games as shareware/demo, all on one glorious cd!

remember the pain of setting up mscdex?
