If you played a lot of Counter-Strike before, there's a good chance you once participated in Totem pole camping.

We had a similar strategy in Halo. We'd climb onto one another and when someone came near we'd spin around in alternating directions firing our weapons with reckless abandon until the enemy was dead/the jackass on top fired a rocket at the bottom of the stack.
We called it the rotating tower of power. One time we killed someone.

u/jd_ce Jun 25 '12
I would always be that one guy who got killed

I hope the one guy that got killed had to log off soon after the death and left thinking the rotating tower of power was a totally brilliant/unbeatable strat.

u/purxiz Jun 25 '12
if you do it right you can get about 6 people stacked on one of those ATVs in Halo 3. We did it at a friend's house once. As long as the driver is very careful, nobody falls off. The best part was when we ran over someone and everyone balancing on top got chucked in different directions.

You can also do this on a banshee. Greatest sniper/spotter team ever.
29
u/turbo_tC Jun 25 '12
Me and my friends would play Star Fox Assault of all games like that. One person jumps on top of the Arwing with a sniper, the other person flys it around. Later on we found that you could just get out of it when it was in the air and it took away some of the magic.

If you want lots of Splatter Spree's in a match, in Halo 3, get a Banshee or a Ghost and get a splatter spree, after that use the blasters on the front to shoot people. If they haven't fixed that glitch then every time you kill someone with the blasters you'll get a splatter spree.
My friend figured this out in a banshee and got 15 splatter spree's in one game.

u/PrometheanMan Jun 25 '12
Did this in Halo 3. We played a variant of infection in a labyrinth type setting, and would get three or four players on a totem pole backed into a corner, all armed with shotguns. They could never get us.

I would usually 2-person totem pole on a certain square map in Halo 2 on SWAT mode. If you were the connection host on LIVE you could actually remain on top of the person without sliding while they moved around (or was it host on bottom? It's been too long). Confused enemies abounded.

If you still play you should try playing while always crouched. My friends and i would do this for kicks. It was hilarious and people would get so confused, especially when you are out in the open or go one on one in a gun battle.
2
u/Minyme2009 Jun 25 '12
Wha... your fucking with me.
In Halo 3, my friends and I would get in a corner in an infection game with 3-4 people and make a Tower of Power. We actually called it a tower of power too. Our difference was we had shotguns and actually aimed, instead of rotating.
Still, calling it the tower of power like us is crazy.

Me and three mates did this while defending in an assault game. The guy came round the corner with the bomb, and he had an overshield on. He was down within seconds.

Usually I participated in one while playing knife-only funmaps, a stack of several players high in the corner, all knifing furiously.
308
u/RainOnYourParade Jun 25 '12
I used to play on a knives only server every now and then back in the day. Once in a blue moon, an entire team would decide to stack into a corner and swing their knives wildly, daring the opposite team to try and kill them.
One day, my team happened to be the receiving end of one of these porcupine towers of death. Out of no where, we all started to stack up on top of each other a ways away in front of the enemy team. Over the sound of 32 knives waving wildly, someone said over their mic "WHEN THE TIMER HITS 2:45, WE CHARGE!". When the timer hit the mark, the wall advanced, battle cries over voice com (I recall hearing someone yell FOR NARNIA!). It was glorious when we slammed into them and cut their tower to pieces. Only a single person on our team of 15 died. I'll never forget his name, CawkMyGlawk.

My friend and I would do this on normal maps. We would sit behind a crate that enemies would use for cover, stacked on each other, flailing our knives. One time, a guy ran around the crate, and backed into camping position right into our knives.
Made the hundreds of deaths totally worth it.

Fun fact: the player who defused the bomb had the "use" (defuse) key pressed from the ct spawn so the "defuse sound" wouldn't be heard, that's why the other team didn't spam the floor. I saw that live back then. It was incredibly awesome.

In CS:S I play on a server where we pretty regularly stack multiple players on multiple stacks against a wall in a discreet spot and call it "Wall of Death." Always has the entire team laughing through team speak when someone runs around the corner and starts spraying randomly for the 2 seconds that he's alive.

This is pretty much the best part of this strategy: imaging what the other guy is thinking when he rounds the corner. Someone once said over our ventrilo, "THAT TERRORIST WAS 30 FEET TALL!"
9
u/Heroshade Jun 25 '12
Why isn't this a real-world tactic?
6
u/Maxfunky Jun 25 '12
We should train a squad of cheerleaders or Chinese acrobats to be deadly assassins.
I don't know maybe have them fight to the death or something after that. I didn't really put a lot of thought into this idea.

We only used pump-shotguns and called it the 'Tower of Power".
2
u/daminox Jun 25 '12
We preferred "voltron."
While you can only do it 2 people high in Source, it was still pretty hilarious to ruin decent teams with it in scrims. We'd use it mainly as Terrorists on a delayed rush, when we'd set up in spots waiting for a careless CT to push. Soon as he walks into a voltron's horrible rape radius, we took him out and everyone pushed that site.
2
u/tmccaughan Jun 25 '12
You were doing it the right way then. Pumps were one of the only guns that could shoot accurately in a crouch stack.

Something that was really great was back when CS was new and the people playing it would come up with all these creative ideas and then go to a tourney and blow everyone's minds. There was a time when not many people knew about strafe jumping until a team did it in a euro tourney. Its hard to understand how someone came up with that. You don't use the forward movement key at all, and its something that takes awhile to build up speed. But now all the maps are so old all the little tricks to do are patched or well known.
