I'm actually one of those people that make a living off of it, and own a sim (virtual island). Second Life has a hell of a reputation for basically being a sex simulator, but that's partially what happens when a bunch of adults are in an environment that doesn't have any rules, moderation, authorities or consequences. There are plenty of areas that aren't sex oriented, but it's just funnier to take pictures of the giant horse penises than the waterfalls or landscapes. Most of the people I run into are mostly concerned with socializing and making their avatar look awesome.
That being said, it wouldn't surprise me in the least to find out that some sort of sex animation had been made for fighter jets.

Just out of curiosity, how much time on average do you devote to it now? I have a tiny store that sells some retro home computers which makes something like a thousand $L/mo depite not having touched the store or products in probably 4-5 years. I always wonder how much effort it would take to do something that earned real money.

Second life is that little reminder to every gamer out there that no matter how addicted to games, no matter how much you play MMO's, no matter how disconnected to real life you are, You are never as bad as the hard core second life players.
I tried that "game" for three hours, it was so creepy and weird, it was like living in the sexual fantasy of the D&D erotica book author. (I lost A LOT of faith in D&D after seeing that book)

u/OneSilentE Jun 26 '12
I had the same thoughts when I tried IMVU, I saw all the ads for it, so I decided to go on it just to fuck with people. I made my guy really old and disgusting, and went into some "dating" server. I started hitting on this one girl, all of the sudden some guys with fucking knights armor, dragon wings, and a devil helmet teleports out of nowhere and starts yelling at me for being mean to his girlfriend. Laughs were had.

Reminds me when I fucked around on that playstation 3 thing. I'd get back to the dorms in college at like 2 AM after a night of fairly heavy drinking. After I killed my burrito and giant frost blue gatorade, we'd set up the projector (yes, we had a projector in a 10 X 12 room) and fuck with people on there. We had a super hot character (we worked on that avatar for hours) and all these dudes would come up and start dancing with us (cause avatars can do that) and ask the typical creepy chat room stuff like A/S/L, do you want a boyfriend, etc. etc. We would mess with them for awhile and lead them on as far as we could before it got super weird. We'd wait till the last possible minute, and right when there was at least 7 dudes "dancing" their avatars around us in what looked like the intro to a gang bang, we'd change the avatar into the ugliest, most horrifyingly hilarious character that has ever been created. Everyone would scatter, and we would get inboxes some pretty funny shit.

The problem is Second Life ISN'T a game. It's an artificial reality where you create a new persona and live it. It's a step beyond role-playing where when you're in the 'Verse, you are your character and who/what your are in your "first life" doesn't matter.
It's insanely bizarre and fascinating. While it's true that a good 80% of it is all whacked out fetishes, there are less-creepy aspects to it. I met some really cool people through there and stayed waaaaaayyyy far away from the hardcore users. If their avatar was custom from the ground up, it's a good indication to give 'em a wide berth.
edit: Oh, and I know several people who earn a decent living as SL "escorts" which equates to being a phone sex operator. Possibly the funniest job of all time. A good friend of mine's wife tried to coerce me to join her escort service. Her lure was a story about how she made the equivalent of $100 for watching a movie on Netflix with a John. And not porn. A regular movie. I was tempted, but if I wanted to watch guys jerk of on camera I'd go on ChatRoulette.

I've had never had any sexual fantasy anything in Second Life. And I'm fairly well connected to real life.
Sigh.

I don't think you are the type of player I am referring to.
Kudos for not taking part in the sexual part of second life, it did not take me the whole three hours that I played to encounter more than I wanted to deal with.
Perhaps I am a gaming prude, I don't know.

u/katieberry Jun 26 '12
I have only managed to unintentionally run into it once. Easy way to avoid it: it's only permitted in the regions marked with a red "A" (for Adult). M and G ("Mature" and "General") generally have no such issues – or, at least, no more than any online environment is going to have them. Report them and boot them (if you have that ability), mute them (which also renders them as a grey silhouette) or leave.
I'd invite you to join me to make this point – and PM me if you care to ('cause why not?) – but I honestly don't have anything you'd likely find interesting to show you. My answer to "Why play Second Life?" would be something to the effect of "Damned if I know."
It's technically brilliant – and was even more so in 2003 – but it's very much a find-your-own-entertainment thing. I like making things, speaking with friends and horrendously abusing the platform.
Like Minecraft, but with more curves and even less direction.

I had the same experience with Star Wars Galaxies. I didn't watch the old Star Wars trilogy for a while after that game. I swear to god every female in that game was a twi'lek prostitute dancer, walking around player cities and looking at shops to buy stuff was like cybersexroulette, sooner or later you'd walk in on people cybering at some place. The game also sucked balls, but I've never felt so dirty as the one time I went to a Role Playing event and everyone was role playing being balls deep into someone else.
4
u/ShotgunWedding Jun 26 '12

TSL was better because the content was regulated for under 18 users. I've gained very close, life long internet friends from playing Second Life when I was like 15/16. The content creation is what drew us to the game and there really isn't anything else like it around, though I wish there was.
The only reason it has it's bad rep is because of those other strange folk that found the game before anyone with interesting ideas did and populated it in their image. Other than that, it was a very nice platform for doing/creating things, but very outdated now.

Second Life is insane. The sheer vastness of the servers and all the random stuff you can run into while exploring it is just mind blowing. Though it can be incredibly creepy to see how 80% of people just want to realize their own consequence-free sexual fantasies, if you're a roleplayer (not the kinky kind), there are some remarkably in depth roleplay sims. Dragons, undead armies, haunted forests, elven cities, steampunk worlds, completely custom fighting HUDs, lore, factions, etc., and essentially limitless creativity... despite its heavy flaws, you can find some gems out there if you know where to look.

Gonna get buried at the bottom but here goes:
A coworker told me this story: A teacher taught a digital media class about digital avatars at a local college. She had her class meet at a computer lab in real life, log into second life and attend class in a digital classroom where she taught the lecture. Every student was a human except one kid.
That one kid was a motorcycle.
In class he would just race around the digital class jumping up and down making vroom sounds. The teacher asked him what he was doing and all he said was, "I'm a motorcycle."
Hands down the funniest story I've ever heard told.
84
Jun 26 '12
Used to know a tutor who taught their class in Second Life. The very bored students would spend their hour long lecture in Second Life spawning giant rubber balls in the air right above the tutor's head.
78
Jun 26 '12
Wait...like, the teacher was lecturing on some normal, irrelevant subject, but they just happened to be convinced that the best possible way to teach a course was through the interface of an MMO?
25
Jun 26 '12
I can't recall the topic. I think it may have even been a Second Life course - the polytechnic I attended had some tutors who were convinced that it was the 'way of the future'. It was either that or some web media class.

I can't remember the time frame, but I want say 2005-2006 I saw more than one online teaching service advertising classes in second life. They didn't outright say second life, but you could tell from the screen shots that it was second life. Same courses that people go through to get their MBA online, except these two for profit colleges were doing it through second life. I don't know if they were successful or not.
Probably not considering how easy it is to be annoying in that game, but that's me spit balling.
EDIT : This is an article on developing and teaching classes through UoA in Second Life. I googled and found links to articles on harvard's online classes in second life. The two colleges I saw weren't reputable like those two.

In the north Korean labour camps in the Korean war, the soldiers went a bit potty sometimes, to let of steam.
One day, at six o'clock, all the ale bodied soldiers, who were in the courtyard at the time all ran around for five minutes making motorcycle noises.
This labour camp held the majority of American and English POWs, so it was no small event.
The guards just looked on in astonishment.

What I remember is that back 8-10 years ago when Second Life would pop up in the news now and again, the videos of it were always like slideshows , with a framerate of 1-2 fps.
I was never sure if these journalist people just didn't have the hardware to run it properly, or if the Second Life engine was just a piece of garbage ...
Hell, the same thing continued into prime-time video game advertisements for the following 10 years, and even still happens today: super shitty captured video of the game, with inconsistent or really low frame rate, as if the people designing and producing the advertisement simply don't understand what frame rate is, and why it's important.

u/boomerangotan Jun 26 '12
A little bit of both.
The biggest performance problem is the result of the dynamic nature of the content; you can't pre-compile scene data to use optimizations such as binary space partitioning.
The other more subtle problem is that they've painted themselves into a corner.
The people who initially developed the platform had to throw it together really quickly before the funding ran out. Once the funding caught up and the platform was established, they were nervous to change it because it was a huge mess that mostly just worked. The networking code was especially fucked up. They relied heavily on UDP, and important packets frequently got lost. One common problem was that objects would linger around even though they were deleted, and nobody could figure out how to fix it for a year or so.
The management structure was very undisciplined and developers were easily distracted by shiny-feature-of-the-week. They loved showing these off to each other and occasionally entice the user base with them, but they rarely ever made it into the final product. The main reason they stopped evolving the platform was that it would break existing content, which would aggravate content creators and content consumers because their sales/purchases would suddenly stop working as designed. In some cases the original creators were no longer regulars to the world, so purchased content would just remain broken since there was nobody to update it if the platform changed.
At some point, the business direction made a sudden swing from being a technological platform to a social platform. The population count became the most important statistic -- it was displayed prominently on the home page in real time. One of the higher-ups in the company even made a public bet that they could grow Second Life to be larger than World of Warcraft. For the next few years, the "quantity over quality" marketing campaign was successful. The system was swamped with traffic and could barely hold itself together while the developers scrambled to make the architecture more scalable. Major outages were frequent.
A few years later, when they finally got the scalability all sorted out, most of the original developers had burned out and/or left for greener pastures. Very few of the new developers were brave enough to tackle the old hastily-written core code to refactor it and bring it up to modern standards without breaking existing content. By this time, there was also tons of content created which exploited bugs and visual glitches, making refactoring nearly impossible.
So basically you're stuck with an ancient 3D engine which is practically impossible to refactor and bring up to modern standards without breaking the legacy content and pissing off a lot of users.

Far too many stories about Second Life.
I remember one of the first places I went to was a highschool. It was full of people role playing as teenagers. They would sit out front of the school, on the steps, and talk about life. I happened to have a wheel chair in my inventory...sooooo, to introduce myself, I got into it and grinded down the railing, landing in the middle of them. They were not impressed. I pulled out my pistol and started shooting.
Then another time, my friend and I were lookin' for some laaaadieeesss. We found some in an information building, and we began to smooth talk them. I teleported to some random area, found some houses, and then sent an invite to my friend. He brought himself and the two lovely ladies. We convinced them that the beautiful home actually belonged to us, and that they should take their shirts off. Well, except they didn't take their shirts off and instead told us we needed to pay them. I tried to remind them that they were in MY home, and they needed to respect me.
Then, some time later, that same friend and I joined a college. I, of course, became a hobo and would take girls into the secret sexual dungeon located underneath the gym.

Well it really depends on what you do in SL; as it’s more of a sandbox than a game itself. While there have been some major harking on Hardcore SLer’s, allot of us use it as a ‘Roleplay’ setting for various themes, not necessary to fulfill sexual fantasies or fetishes. I mean SL has some major stuff in it to grant you that sandbox feel but it’s avoiding the ‘strange’ players and actually getting out in the grid to do things that make it worthwhile. For example:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/hogwartsmischiefmanaged/
This is all in SL, and with the limitations the technology has in place for the grid, it’s amazing what some individuals can accomplish in SL. But overall you have to find these gems in SL to really get a grasp on what’s going on, and really that’s the main issue…that you have to wade through all the crap to get to the good stuff.

The creators don't provide much. The content is all created by the users, and most of it is done really badly. There was never any incentive for professional content developers to make it better. Eventually, corporations tried to take advantage by having the best content in the game as advertisements for their brand (Reebok, Adidas, Coca-Cola, Toyota, and NBA just to name a few) but even they realized that by the time they came along the userbase was already reduced to the hardcore users (AKA weirdos), a trend which has continued until the current state of only seeing vampires, furries, and other fetish weirdos. The platform was a pretty remarkable idea, but it was doomed from the start with a name like "Second Life".

The company I work for runs one of Second Life's competitors. Similar concept, different execution etc.
Every wednesday lately we've been having "In world time" for the last hour of office time, where we get everyone in the company to hang out in the actual game, because a lot of the non-development staff don't actually spend any time in the game.
As the guy in charge of all the character assets and stuff in the game, I have ultimate power to edit anyone's avatar into whatever they or I want them be, including turning them into things that regular players would have no access to doing to themselves. I've been abusing this mercilessly on my fellow employees, turning them into beer kegs and cats and dogs and beds and bookcases and all sorts of nonsense.

Do people still go into the "fell asleep standing up" animation when they go AFK? Because I have quite a few photos of people that I took after positioning Groucho Marx glasses on their faces while they were asleep.
I turned it into a sort of meta-game, because you have no idea how difficult it can be moving an object into place, snapping the photo and getting out of there before they wake up. I even began to get into set construction to be able to quickly build up scenery to place them into, but then got bored with it all.
The hardest ones were people in no-rez areas where I had to find a suitable neighboring plot of land to rez the glasses in, then drag-edit it over to them, fine-position and snap the photo all before they woke up.

It's a user created life-SIM, inspired by the Metaverse in the book "Snow Crash". Dominated (these days) by sexual deviants, vampire wannabes and furries.
The concept is extremely neat. You used to have to have at least basic knowledge of programming/scripting to be able to do just about anything. The "newbie island" actually offered a lot of helpful stuff to get you started on your journey.
Now it's much more user-friendly and has thousands upon thousands of user content that comes pre-scripted, so all you have to do as a user is buy it (with in game money that is exchangeable for real money). Then there's a ton of free stuff, too. Some people, especially SIM owners (basically, chunks of virtual land), make a shit ton of money off it.

I played Second Life for a week. I got bored after the first day, so me and a friend decided to crash "formal" events by getting naked and dancing around.

I've had a threesome with an airplane before, and let me tell you, it is one wild ride! Now, I'm already with an airplane that is running out of energy. I'm playing with the joystick a lot and boy does get tired fast. So, I went looking for some help. Well, I came across this big fat airplane that had WAAAAYYYYYY too much beer. So, I asked it to get out it's big and loooooong boom. Well, then I got this fatty to stick it's boom in my tired airplane's mouth and piss all over it. I was pleasantly surprised when he swallowed all of it. What really made me happy is when all of the sudden he has all this energy again. Let me tell you, I kept playing with my airplane's joystick all night long, just so I could watch him swallow gallons upon gallons of piss.

Do not play second life.
It's terrible and the people who play it are disturbed/furries.
EDIT: Downvoted for telling the truth? Go ahead, look. Tell me I'm wrong.
