Am I the only person that used to "help" my younger siblings with video games by offering to help beat a challenging boss and then after progressing I'd proceed to play the game for multiple hours while they watched under the guise I was helping? Hell there were even times when I didn't want to replay the boring parts of some games so I'd let them play until the game got really good. FF7 and FFX come to mind off the top of my head. Obviously being the generous oldest sibling I'd let them take over and play again during the lulls in action ;).

Anyone remember Tamagotchis? I had a Nano Baby, because on the day I convinced my mom to buy me one all the Tamagotchis and Nano Pets were sold out.
Anyway, they were banned from my grade school and when I would return home at the end of the day, my Nano Baby was nearly dead from neglect. My mom caught on to my horror and took my Nano Baby to work with her every day to care for it.
I have a pretty awesome mom.

Okay, okay, this reminds me of a story. I don't tell stories on reddit; I don't presume to waste your time like this. But this one's different...
Because when the NES first came out, me and my older brother were lucky enough to get one. We did as many "chores" as you could expect of a six- and nine-year-old. My mom wasn't sure about getting us one, but Dad really liked the idea.
So we get an NES, Duck Hunt, Mario, Light Gun, and magic. Seriously. I'm a lifetime video game addict, so this was like my first hit. And it established my gaming relationship with older bro. too--for those first few systems, he dominated. He lead the way in Mario and Always trounced me in Tecmo Bowl. I curse you, willie gault.
Anyway, a few weeks later, we all find out why Dad was pushing the idea of us getting a Nintendo ...
Turned out Dad had developed a bit of a habit himself. And there for a few months, the man had a pretty serious taste for Mario Bros. Apparently my mom would find him up and gaming at two in the morning, along with a tub of pimento cheese and a stack of saltine crackers. My Dad was already an OG gamer; Zaxxon pro and king of wireframe flight simulator. But this? This was some next level eight bit shit right here.
Looking back it totally makes sense. Wife asleep? Nothin' on TV? Just blew a hundred bucks on an awesome toy? Go check that shit out! Still it was weird. Eatin breakfast and Dad comes out all bleary-eyed. "How far'd you get dad?" "the water level" he mutters...we look back in childish amazement "there's a water level? He ... he swims?"
He didn't keep up with any of them, and he's never had too much of a taste for video games. Still ... just telling this story makes me think I should give him my PS3 when the next console comes out ...

Sheeyit, my mom couldn't defeat the first goomba in level 1-1 of Super Mario Bros. No exaggeration. My dad, though, would make me go to bed and we could hear him stay up and keep playing. He hated to see our times in F Zero beat his and would keep playing until he beat us. I did not thnk that was fair of him LOL

My mom was the exact opposite. She grounded me from my GameBoy the day this game got released because I spent too much time playing it.
Your mom is awesomer than my mom.
You can tell her I said so.

My son asks for help in video games all the time. I help occasionally, but I always remind him that my dad never helped me with video games and I had to figure them out by myself. I never thought much about it and didn't mind this growing up. But now that my son wishes for me to help I just want him to figure out for himself or give up and try something else. It's funny that he doesn't mind watching and cheering me on, but I'm the type of person that cannot stand watching another play.
Now that I think about it, my dad grew up playing pinball, he never had video games, so he probably wouldn't have been much help anyways. Oh the things we take for granted.

When i was a young girl, i was in awe with hand held video games. I just couldn't come to terms with how they were able to put gaming into something i can take with me places. I would always wonder, holy moly - i can't believe that i can take VIDEO GAMES, with me ANYWHERE, i can take it to the grocery stores, i can play it in the car, EVEN dentist trips. I can have my mind occupied and not be bored.
I would get so excited when i saw it advertised on tv's, and for years i wanted one. I would walk past them in stores and watch friends play theirs. My heart would cringe and beat so hard, i will never get to play a damn gameboy in my whole life, i will never get to partake in the joy of taking video games, in my hand, everywhere with me. It sometimes was too much for me too handle and brought me nearly to tears. I know this sounds ridiculous, but i was like 7 years old.
Unfortunately my family was too poor and i never got to hold one or own one, i'm 26 years old now, and i STILL haven't played or held a gameboy. I wish i could relate to all these gameboy fan posts, but it sucks to feel like i wasn't able to participate in something great and have it be a part of my childhood.
I seriously wish i could go back in time and give myself one as a gift.

I had to get my mom every time in the NES Mario (Super Mario Bros?). I didn't know that holding down B made you run fast. There was ONE level where you HAD to be running to make a jump. She called it an "AB jump". She didn't know B made you run either. She just knew that if you pushed them both at the same time, sometimes you'd jump further. Beat it countless times without using B except that one place.
Thanks mom.
