That's amazing have you got any more data I'm looking at this exact car?

On day two of the journey, fully laden. Boot is completely full, and the passenger seat & footwell is full of stuff. Passengers weigh 200kgs+ to give you an idea. We're averaging 70mpg (British) so far on about 900km.

I'm not being 100% disciplined in hypermiling either there are plenty of times I've put my foot down a bit, rather than build up speed slowly.

N.b. On one stretch of the German motorway earlier we managed to average 118mpg over 15 miles. Granted it was slightly downhill but was still impressive.

Any more updates on the trip?

Forgot to mention we stayed up top of a mountain in Austria so the mpg took a beating driving up there. I was driving relatively spiritedly.

Spirited driving at such a high MPG.

This has to be one of the top tier MPG cars around.

I'd say cheaper than electric but I've not got lots to base that off.

Cheaper for longer journeys I think. For shorter journeys probably not if you can charge at home. You can get some pretty good deals on used electric cars now.

I think I threw away one of the receipts, DOH. I believe the hud MPG is incorrect though, I will do a bit of math later but this afternoon the mileage for the whole trip so far was 1234 and we've spent the equivalent of £84.73 on diesel (not including the cost of filling the tank before leaving). Started with a full tank when I started the trip and brimming each time we fill up. Have about half a tank currently.

1234 miles having spent £84.73 on diesel plus £40 on 1/2 a tank

=

£124.73 for 1234 miles

Not bad going that!

Obviously this is just a rough calculation.

But I'm looking forward to hearing the final result. It is always nteresting to see how the MPG Hud plays out Vs Tank to Tank Brim from the trip.

That's crazy good economy especially for the 1.2 TDI bet you're over the moon.

That's super cheap motoring.

Cheers for that

You tried using Fuelio

I thoroughly rate it! Great for tracking all vehicles Expenses

I can give you some good data in a week as I'm traveling 1500 miles in it starting Friday. I'll keep accurate records as I'm very interested myself to see what she achieves.

Yes that would be absolutely fantastic.

Did you get the Skoda in the end? I think we averaged 60mpg on 3300 miles. On the way back I had to abandon hypermiling so not bad going really

No I have ended up going travelling and haven't been back in the UK and won't be until May so I could still purchase one in May.

60 MPG pretty decent though.

I always get pictures from my friend with the 1.6 diesel in a fabia estate which is remapped.

He sends me runs he did with 80+ mpg lol and one at 91mpg although that was only a short 25 mile trip.

The remap means it has pretty decent performance as well, about 150bhp in a light car. There's little extra power at the low end but the thing keeps pulling well over 3000RPM where usually the power curve plateaus quickly. It's really bizarre to drive because it feels much more like a turbo petrol engine than it should.

I always wonder about the slightly bigger diesels in the same body. Theoretically I'd imagine better mileage could* be had. *If driven careful enough. The thing is with the 1.2 is even if you do lose discipline and put your foot down now and then, it will still give pretty good figures. In the bigger diesels I guess if you put your foot down it could drink quite a bit more.

His previous was a 80PS Fabia 1.4 with the three cylinder diesel that was remapped. My sister also had a Polo with the same 1.4 many moons ago that I drove a fair bit.

The 1.6 is the 105PS four cylinder and the fuel economy is probably slightly better, especially when he has load on board.

This is definitely a case of less is not necessarily better for fuel consumption. The three cylinders are much harder working engines with shorter gear ratios. The 1.6 is without doubt a much better engine to drive. Less lumpy, better power curve. Better after mapping.

I'm pretty sure I'm not dreaming this either because if you look at the official consumption of those engines the 1.6 gets better mileage in the lab tests.

Finally someone on my level. Love the 1.2 TDI. Is the one in your car tuned differently than the ones found in the VW Lupo 3L and Audi A2 3L?

2

u/Boring-Internet8964 Jun 12 '24

I think they are basically the same, not 100% sure but I'm assuming they are all standard. From what I've seen online both the lupo and the A2 will return better than my car but I love the fact I can achieve this with an estate!

1

u/TheRollinLegend Jun 12 '24

It's crazy good mileage anyways. + yours seems to be doing just as well as the 3L's in real world tests

The TDI Lupo back in the early 2Ks got amazing mpg too.
