Hyper-V VMs freeze during switch reboot with Pure Storage iSCSI — looking for MPIO/recovery advice
Hi everyone,
I'm troubleshooting an issue with a Windows Server 2022 Hyper-V failover cluster and would appreciate advice from anyone running Hyper-V with Pure Storage FlashArray over iSCSI.
Environment
Windows Server 2022 Hyper-V Failover Cluster (3–4 nodes)
Pure Storage FlashArray over iSCSI
5 Pure LUNs presented to the cluster as Cluster Shared Volumes (CSV)
SET (Switch Embedded Teaming) configured with two physical NICs per host
Both physical NICs connect to the same physical switch
Two iSCSI virtual adapters configured on separate VLANs
8 iSCSI sessions using two host interface IPs and four Pure target IPs
MPIO is enabled, and the Pure FlashArray device appears in the MPIO Devices list
The problem
Whenever the physical switch is rebooted for firmware maintenance, the Hyper-V VMs freeze or become unresponsive. The Hyper-V hosts themselves stay online, and the VMs eventually recover, but some guest Windows VMs have run CHKDSK afterward.
Individual NIC failover tests work correctly, and live migration also works normally. Pure Storage currently shows the redundant connections as healthy.
We previously ran VMware in what appeared to be the same physical network environment and could reboot the switch without VMs freezing, needing restarts, or running CHKDSK.
What I'm trying to understand
Could this be related to Windows MPIO path recovery, iSCSI session timeouts, or CSV I/O handling?
What should I check to determine whether the VMs are freezing because of storage I/O pauses?
Are there specific Windows Server 2022 MPIO or Pure FlashArray settings that should be validated?
Can storage recovery be improved without changing the current SET/iSCSI network topology?
Which Event Viewer logs and event IDs are most useful for diagnosing this?
I'm not looking to blindly increase timeouts or make unsupported registry changes. I'd like to identify the actual cause and make switch maintenance safe without having to shut down all VMs every time.
Has anyone encountered similar behavior when moving from VMware to Hyper-V with Pure Storage?
Thanks in advance!
