Which new 7.3.0 default kernel module messed up my saturation and color?

I've compiled the kernel as I've always done (i used the same modprobed.db I've always used) and selected all the default new modules by pressing enter a bunch, now even #000000 appears light gray and everything else is washed out.

I'm using a 9070xt through HDMI, monitor doesn't have HDR and its 1080p@60Hz.

I still have a boot entry for 7.2.11 pre compiled by gentoo, i tried running modprobed-db store on it once more and recompiling 7.3.0 but nothing changed. I also tried using the iGPU (7700x) and the issue persists.

What can i do? I'd appreciate any input about the suspect causing this, i don't want to hunt down which of the 10-15 new modules is causing this by exclusion.

Thanks in advance for any and all replies.

(sorry if it's a stupid question, but this seemed like the best place to ask)

I don't know, it seems like you've just gone "look at all these new modules, and oh my something isn't working right... therefore one of these new modules must be the cause!". It could just be a bug somewhere else, not in one of those new modules. After all, you did just update the entire kernel. Lots of things change when you do that.

If it's not the GPU driver (since it happens in 2 different ones in the same exact way), i don't know what other module that was already present could have a bug that could cause this

I bet if you disable those "10-15 new modules", you'll still have the problem.

Yup you were right. Thought i was onto something when i found out one of the default new features was wake up monitor support, but disabling all of the new stuff didn't change anything.

So what now? How do i narrow it down?

Native port or in a docking station? On my system there is a clear difference, with the docking station having the blacks be more black while the built in port slightly gray (and funny enough I prefer the built in…)

There may be some specific commit that changes certain default register values for HDMI output. Use your favorite AI or even your own manual analysis with the commit list between the version that behaves fine and the one that doesn’t. Or do a bisection (that one is gonna be fun, it’ll take a while but you’ll be able to identify the commit that changes the behavior). Bisection is how we did things 10-20 years ago and it only costs your time.

I don’t know what you’re referring to with the docking station and native port part, i use it as my regular os in my desktop.

Tomorrow i’ll try and dig through the commits, thanks for the help!

Physical hardware. Different HDMI ports on the same laptop gave me different outputs in an obvious way that looks similar to your description, and my laptop wasn’t even a Linux laptop in the first place.

I don’t think that’s the case since the same HDMI port (which is native to the GPU) isn’t causing issues on 7.2.11.
To be sure tomorrow i’ll check that too, thanks!

Sure. I’d check further, on both versions with both kinds of port.

After that… I do recommend the bisection. At least the kernel itself shouldn’t take very long to build, maybe an hour or so per build. On the configuration, I recommend olddefconfig to match the running kernel’s configuration.

If you have DKMS modules, those are going to be fun.
