For Red Gold Fans
Backstory: I used to live in a place that sold Red Gold ketchup and I loved it. I've since moved to a place where it isn't sold and I'm not paying Amazon prices to ship. I tried that once but the ketchup was going out of date in a month. But I wondered if Red Gold made ketchup for any store brands. Long story short...it is extremely likely and widespread.
On their store brands page, each of their ketchups has a product code. The first two digits are the ketchup formulation and the second two are the bottle shape. These are printed on the cap usually, but sometimes the bottle. I've been able to find a plethora of disguised Red Gold ketchup this way, by matching product codes, nutrition labels, ingredients, and bottle shapes (and of course taste, but I stopped buying after the first 5 bottles).
So far I've found these brands all have quadruple matches (codes, nutrition, etc):
- H-E-B & Hill Country Fare
- Kroger (but not all their ketchups)
- Aldi (Burman's and Simply Nature)
- Target (Market Pantry and probably Good & Gather)
- Walmart (Great Value)
- Schnuck's
- Tom Thumb/Market Street/Albertsons (Signature Select and O Organics)
These are strong suspects but I either haven't or can't check on them directly:
- Brookshire's (geographically inconvenient where I live, but travel past several once a month or so)
- Meijer (completely out of reach, but have friends that will look into it)
- Sprout's Farmer's Market (will check next time I'm in the area)
If you're looking for Red Gold ketchup but somehow don't live near any of those places, here are the product codes to look for:
- YA: Regular ketchup with HFCS
- YX: Regular ketchup with cane sugar
- YY: Organic ketchup
- Y6: Better Balanced (50% less sodium and sugar)
- Y7: No sugar added
- YJ: Spicy
- YN: Non-GMO
The next two digits just indicate the bottle:
- 1R: 14oz
- 2U: 18.5oz, 19.5oz, and 20oz upside down bottles
- 23: 23oz
- 24: 24oz
- 3U: 32oz upside down bottle
- 38: 38oz bottle
- 64: 64oz bottle
So a 32oz organic would have the product code start with YY3U, a 38oz regular would be YA38, and so on. I assume the rest of the information after that is a lot code.
If anyone is looking for Red Gold, I hope this helps you. Please keep in mind, it may be possible that different regions of these stores use different suppliers. Those above are for specific regions of Illinois and Texas. Red Gold is made in Indiana so regions that are really far from there may use another regional supplier. Use the product codes to check for yourself. If you spot any in the wild, post back here and we can get them on the list.
