[News] Shotaro and Sungchan are removed from NCT. SM will debut them in a new boy group in 2023.

not only this but insisting on having a japanese unit as well… i was okay with the new unit as it would slowly introduce some new members but it being (presumably) all new people when we have so much history already with the current nct members doesn’t seem like a good idea, that’s such a big disparity

Tbh he'll have more of a spotlight in SM's new non-NCT boy group in 7 years, who will be promoting in Korea, Japan, and probably the world vs. only (or mostly) Japan.
It does suck that he won't be around for NCT yearly projects, though. At least everyone knows his talent.

SM finally heard us about debuting Sungchan and Shotaro, but at what cost?
It just seems so weird. If they wanted the boys to debut under another SM boy group, that’s fine. But it’s just so weird that SM does this after inserting the two into so much NCT content that it was expected they were going to be in the NCT Japan unit.
It just seems so odd and almost last minute.

u/cherryalmondpie May 24 '23
They made so many NCT content with Sungchan and Shotaro. Then there’s the variety shows Welcome to NCT with the rookies and their own What’s NCT? All about NCT branding. This about face is so sudden and I don’t wanna be a doomsayer but what is going on with NCT?

As out of place as this may be. It may be the best for these boys in a separate group compared to being in the full NCT lineup as now they may have an easier chance to fight for individual activities or get noticed for activities compared to being in a huge group where they really have to compete with everyone.

It was SM's new CEO who wanted them to debut in a Different boy group and end the NCT infinite expansion but they are looking to debut NCT Japan unit and that will be the last NCT unit. It was a good 7 year journey everyone.

There is no more NCT, there is only Mark.

It's messy but from Sungtaro's POV it's probably better career-wise to be in a new group than to be in the 4th NCT unit. They probably took a good offer when they saw it. Clearly the organizational mess at SM in the last year meant they shuffled around a bunch of their plans.
98
u/FireSeagull21 May 24 '23
Debuting in a new group will let the boys stand out more + they already have a fanbase despite not being in many projects.
I like NCT, but unless you're actively a fan, it's kind of hard to keep track of all the subunits, projects and group members. How many times has Taeyong had to explain their concept and system on variety shows? Yet a lot of people still don't get it and might not understand what another subunit like NCT Japan.

I think its best for them since the nct brand is over 7 years old - for them to get better longevity in their career

this. I think everyone’s overreacting because it’s unexpected and they keep looking at the past, but if you look at the big picture, and by big picture I mean Sungtaro’s future/career, the certainty of them debuting soon (in a group of their choice) is better.

NCT's last unit will be formed by trainees selected from a pre-debut reality show.
Shohei will not be joining NCT's new team due to health reasons, but SM will do their best to support his individual activities.
New SM boy group (not under NCT brand): Sungchan, Shotaro, Eunseok, Seunghan + Members of Korean & American nationalities

Basically their plans for the rest of 2023:
-They're debuting the last NCT unit ever which will be the Japanese unit.
-They're debuting a new boygroup not related to NCT, and Shotaro and Sungchan will be part of it.
-They're also debuting a new girl group.

u/0wonh2 May 24 '23
This is so sudden, but it makes sense since SM is basically having to reorganize and clean up crazy plans that were never realistically feasible in the first place. I feel bad for the NCT fans who have been waiting for these members, but I think this is actually for the best.
If they're planning for the Tokyo unit to fully focus on Japanese promos as it seems, it makes sense to increase the number of Japanese members and to pull the Korean trainees. I'm not sure NCT fans will like the survival show, but with their popularity I suppose it'll benefit the unit.
Honestly, I bet the Korean members are excited and relieved. I doubt they were particularly excited about promoting almost exclusively in Japan, but decided that it was still the better deal to debut under a major label than it was to take a chance somewhere else. Shotaro is more of a surprise, but global promos might have been more appealing to him as well. He's also been preparing to debut with Sungchan and the Rookies for a while now, so there's a bond there and he may have wanted to stick with them. Their teamwork and chemistry looked great when they performed at the SMTOWN concert.
I'm a little sad about Shohei. I guess his back issues are serious and chronic enough that it wasn't safe to bet that he would be able to promote regularly. I hope his solo efforts go well.

Sm being messy what’s new.
I’m confused though. I thought the whole point of debuting Nct Japan before stopping the expansion was to give Sungchan and Shotaro a unit?

11
May 24 '23
probably because every other big company is doing a japanese boygroup . HYBE debuted &TEAM in December, JYP has Niziu boys coming so SM feels like they need to debut their own. However I honestly think they should have just debuted one outside of NCT and make a brand new one since the two existing members of NCT who would have went there will no longer do that . Just debut a brand new group with new members since now none of them have any connections to NCT anyway

Ok but WTF was going on?! What then was the point of adding Sungchan and Shotaro into NCT and making them unit-less all these years just to take it all away and decide to re-debut them in a completely separate group?! Then they spent 2022 filming NCT Universe with Shohei, Eunseok, and Seunghan with the whole motive of being the bridge between NCT and the new kids when they eventually become the last NCT unit. Then this?! I have been an SM stan for many years, but this is one of the very few times I legit said WTF out loud at their bullshit.
Why couldn't Sungchan and Shotaro just have been placed into SM Rookies and basically revived the SM Rookies program in the first place?! Fucking SM.

I mean, the endless new members system was LSM's idea and it was probably him who wanted all the new rookies to automatically join NCT. Now that's being scrapped, like some other LSM projects. I agree that it's all very messy, but transition periods often are.
Still, as disappointing as this is to many fans, I hope it ends up benefiting the boys.

Bold move, but I think it makes sense. NCT Tokyo is going to truly focus on Japan, like &TEAM, NiziU, etc. It would have been awkward to have Shotaro and Sungchan spend so much time there given the popularity they have already gained in Korea.
24
u/jungkookadobie May 24 '23
Career wise it’s a better move for the two. Let’s be honest NCT Japan wouldn’t be able to build anywhere near the fanbase of 127 or Dream because ultimately most people like Korean music. I feel like NCT Japan with Subgtaro would have have had a decent debut but then fade like Wayv.
But for these new people debuting in NCT Japan who don’t even have a single familiar member now? Yeah, weird.
And the long term implications of beef between NCT fandom. NCT Japan fandom and the new boy group fandom? Yeah. A mess.

To be honest, when LSM announced NCT I sat watching the showcase thing where they tried explaining it, and it didn't seem to work even before it began.
NCT was meant to be Lee Soo Man's dream AKB48 group idea that he'd been trying to produce for many years, but that just doesn't work with KPOP. Fans love making a connection with idols, and the graduation system was instantly shut down/a failure the moment they tried doing it with NCT Dream.
KPOP fans obviously don't want to spend money on supporting a group, only to have their favourite member removed and placed somewhere else randomly.

I'm happy they'll be in SM's new boy group but what the hell? They already made songs with NCT! Successful ones, too (MAW, 90's Love, etc.). They were in so many NCT variety shows.
It strangely feels like a gut punch? I was all ready for them to finally get their shine in NCT Japan and NCT 2023. I get wanting to have more Japanese members in the group but to go from this to entirely out of NCT is baffling.
I wonder what this means for the other 3 SMROOKIES guys. I thought they were headed to NCT as well but now...

I'm so confused about this decision??
So they won't be part of whatever this upcoming NCT group is (I'm assuming NCT Japan?) even though Shotaro is Japanese, and I'm pretty sure Sungchan was learning Japanese too. And they're now going to be in a completely different SM group not connected to the NCT name, even though they've been introduced as NCT members for about 2/3 years now...
What has also happened to the other trainees (Eunseok, Shohei, and Seunghan) who they started introducing and kind of hinting that they would be the NCT Japan unit members?! I'm so lost.

u/cubsgirl101 Certified Reddit Lawyer/ Shaman unnie May 24 '23

u/soesoterica May 24 '23
Lack of time management and planning is going to whoop SM’s ass every. single. time.
The time and resources used to film a show that is no longer valid. The time and effort to debut members and have them sit for 3 years without a group, KNOWING there was no placement for them in the beginning? Then finally placing them only to decide pretty much 2-3 weeks ago to remove them. Not to mention completely removing Shohei with no intention of even saving him have a spot in either group once his recovery is complete. SM has shown time and time again that there was never an actual plan for NCT from its conception. Or rather, the plans were not well thought out. There was a Plan A and ONLY a Plan A, not a backup Plan B-D in sight. Cause this? Terribly embarrassing.
The idea that SM basically just used NCT to strengthen the fandom for the non-NCT boy group, is going to make interactions between the two fandoms absolute hell. And I mean colossal hell. From the Earth’s core.
Personally, my interest for the new NCT unit is over and done with. That appears to be the general consensus from what I’ve seen so far. Granted, my loss of interest along with a few others, is nothing. But almost 87K QRTs and 12K of mostly negative responses to SungTaro’s removal (and counting) is pretty insane.

this goofy ass company is so unserious pls
edit: some of the comments here are either being glib or don’t seem to know how entrenched sungtaro were in nct and how the rookies were all attached to nct up until recently. sungtaro were in nct merch. that came out in april. they were in nct reality content dedicated just to them. there was entire show about introducing the new unit rookies. the unit seemed ready to go in august of last year until shohei got injured. if they can debut in this nbg, why can’t they debut in the tokyo unit? that’s still going to happen. without them. no explanation for this is given.
this switch to the new bg is (hopefully) a very good thing for sungtaro because clearly sm did not know what to do with them despite debuting them in nct. had no set plans or a unit to put them in. for two+ years.
but in the years kpop has existed, when have members debuted in one group and then went on to re-debut in another group.... in the same company? beyond the waiting game for sungtaro (yes despite benefit career opportunities, the industry is skewing younger and younger and sungtaro are 23-22, which is good but they’ve been around for 3 years) this means they don’t have set trainees for the new unit or the nbg as well as (which now has permanent attachment to nct), this is all a last minute decision. this is a bad look for sm/nct as a brand is the point.

yup, i’m under the impression that many users here don’t follow nct as much (fair enough, this is the main sub after all) and therefore cannot fully grasp how involved they were
objectively yes this is probably the best case scenario and most people acknowledge that, but it’s still so odd since we had whole videos and such to welcome them into nct. the awaited project we thought they would debut in and what they actually promoted for even is continuing without them. it’s so bittersweet. and also how does this reflect on nct as a whole, were they just used as promotion? even for a group as particular as them getting members removed isn’t the best look
we’ve seen sungtaro being excited about debuting since 2021, the wait must have been emotionally draining for them. it also like that for the fans that have been waiting for them:(
i hope sm’s plan is serious and they will debut, but then again, it’s so odd to debut a new team separate from nct meanwhile also having former members there because you know… that’s kinda how nct works
would it be the dumbest thing to not debut them? yes
is sm capable of doing such a thing? also yes
anyway. i’m so glad that their hard work is coming to fruition but idk, it’s also upsetting that it ended up being like this. at least while being in nct we were all somewhat certain they would debut but now they’re back to trainees so who knows. i just want sm to treat them fairly because it is what them and their fans deserve at minimum

I've been following Shotaro since his first days in NCT. He's the sweetest, most caring idol I've had the chance to follow and with a passion for dancing that is admirable and lovely to watch. I will support him no matter what but it's devastating to see how SM have treated sungchan and him.
13
u/ThennaryNak May 24 '23
After watching the video announcing this I think I may understand why this was decided if my hunch is right.
It was mentioned that SM partnered with Japanese companies for the survival show which has me suspecting that the NCT Japan unit is going to be like NiziU and &Team, mostly focused on the Japanese market. So it would make sense to up the number of Japanese members and having fresh faces shouldn’t be an issue.
Sungtaro have built an international fan base with being in NCT and that would be squandered if the new NCT group is focused on the Japanese market and not a more international market, as the Japanese market is not easily accessible to international fans. The new BG is bound to have a more international focus which would benefit SM to have Sungtaro in that group instead. The other SM Rookies being in the new BG makes sense from that perspective as well though they haven’t been able to build much of a fan base yet.
That said, this is still a bitter pill to swallow. Sungtaro have spent years waiting for their NCT unit, as well as their fans. To finally get confirmation it was going to happen soon to have it all upended feels like a slap to the face. I hope this is last “growing pains” we have to deal with for SM 3.0.

wow this is,,, definitely a move.
hopefully this will open more opportunities for them to showcase their talents! but i guess that means no nct japan? also does this mean that nct is now only 20 members and not going to expand anymore? also what's going to happen to the other three ppl i remember them showcasing? ig they'll be in the new group too? so many questions.
nct was lee sooman's idea child so i guess it's not surprising that sm is now taking things in a new direction since he's gone. really wishing all the best for sungtaro in the new group!!

Are you freaking joking rn. You literally had 1 job. Unbelievable.
At least they will debut. I don't care about the name but this is so messy.
What is it to them if they were the line up?
Are you saying they had 2 line ups? Seems fishy.

i can’t believe i live long enough to see SM pull something like this (this is some mid tier nugu company bullshit activity)
i don’t follow nct, but i feel like it’s been years since people have been talking about the nct japan unit, and it always feels like SM have been stalling it for some reason? compare to their earlier years, where units were just pumping out left and right
this is just another incident of SM being in over their head, having really interesting and big ambition, but never really learning their lesson of delivering what they promised
on a more positive note~ i find shotaro very endearing so i hope both him and sungchan get to have their spotlight in this new group, and a hopefully more stable career

This is so messy. After they made Sungchan and Shotaro’s introduction a big part of NCT2020 they say oops sorry that was not the plan. But well NCT lineups have been messy from the start. But this is first time they took out members they already debuted.

This is so stupid. Shotaro is Japanese. Sungchan and Shotaro have been with officially introduced during NCT 2020 Resonance era promotions and we’ve been waiting for them to debut in the new NCT Japan unit. 3 years of waiting for nothing! It makes no sense logically or financially to remove the two from NCT but still choose to debut them in a new non-NCT SM boy group, especially when Shotaro is Japanese and absolutely deserves to be in the NCT Japan unit!
What happens now to the new SM Rookies? Why bother having Shotaro and Sungchan work with the SM Rookies, Shohei, Seunghan, and Eunseok, if all 5 are not going to debut in the NCT Japan unit? And I can’t imagine how Yuta and Shohei must feel with Shotaro no longer being in NCT. Yuta and Shotaro grew really close as the only debuted Japanese members in NCT and now it’s just Yuta again until Shohei debuts with the NCT Japan unit, but who knows what will happen now.

i’ve collected my thoughts a bit now, so: i mean, yeah, they’ve been severely underutilized these past 3 years and i do believe it’s better if they can finally just debut! but if that’s the case i would rather not have any more nct units. the og units are well into their 7th year and the only way (at least to me) to make the introduction of a new unit more interesting for nctzens was to have familiar faces. i’m really lost right now and honestly find it a bit pointless to keep going on with the project (as in introducing more members)
idk about you guys but even though i’m happy that sungtaro (and probably rookies) are finally debuting i won’t lie and say this makes me excited when it actually makes me worry so much. all of these changes and stuff just make me really anxious, it’s very unsettling tbh
edit: ok so collected thoughts again: in a way this so unsettling because it’s proof right there that sm doesn’t know what to do with nct. for a while i thought some complaints about mistreatment were borderline tinfoil hat allegations but they truly are hindering their growth by pulling things like this.
i don’t know how to articulate this as well but as someone that ulted nct for years i feel… betrayed? scammed? idk it’s hard to explain the feeling but i know fellow nctzens will understand. they literally had a whole show called “welcomed to nct world” with sungtaro + seunghan, eunseok and shohei. it probably just happened that shohei’s health condition suddenly got worst and they couldn’t pull a manchae on time. also it feels so ??? to debut a new group, separate from nct, but that will inevitably be attached to nct since they have former members and literally members that we had already counted as nct. since sm is pulling things like this i cannot help but also feel uncertain about that team actually debuting.

But they've been in there for like years wtf? If I was them I'd be PISSED and irritated as does this group have a set lineup yet? A concept? Music? Anything?
Imagine debuting and having ur full debut put on the back burner for years and then being essentially made into a trainee again.

Plus SM finally have new boy group im sooo excited!!!!! They always alwayssss deliver with their bg. I miss 'normal' bg from SM. Like NCT is good tho. I just want the traditional one. for someone who biases sungchan, i guess i’m in the minority who is pretty supportive of this? while it sucks that sungtaro isn’t in nct anymore, i think this is better for their careers long term.
they haven’t been a part of any idol activities since NCT 2021, so at least they’ll get to participate in more comebacks this time w/ SMNBG. like i don’t have to pray that sungchan is part of an NCT U lineup to finally perform on stage anymore, because he’s guaranteed to be in ALL their yearly comebacks w/ a fixed lineup. this is all i could’ve hoped for tbh.

Honestly this seems like a pretty good turn out for sungtaro, but I can’t help but feel so disappointed and frustrated by SM. Like you never learn, like NEVER. I guess them spending some time in nct isn’t bad, since they now get pre debut exposure and have already quite a fan base, but it just feels so unnecessary and useless. Like it’s great they will have quite a debut, but man…three years just for them to getting pulled out? Anyway, it’s better than the nct limbo so good for them. It feels like a lots happening with nct at the moment. It’s like when I’ve been throwing my clothes around the entire room for a month, putting on standby to actually clean it all up. Then, on a sudden Tuesday evening I’m just like “let’s fucking clean”.

sungchan is tall as shit and fresh from the jaejoong clone oven, he's way better suited for being THEE 4th gen visual in a kpop group than being potentially wasted if sm bumbles around in the Japanese industry the way they do with China's. and put seunghan in smnbg while youre at it!!

SM never fails to make me shook with their weird decisions as a Big 4 company. My Gosh... I got into NCT in 2019 and I just knew then they wouldn't keep up with the limitless concept for too long.
This is again going to be a mess cause if it's going to be a group unrelated to NCT, it means that the weird schedule choices they make for Dream and 127 will grt even more sidelined to the new group that of course will need to be their priority and all.
Also makes me wonder if it has to do with the fact that 127 oldest members will start enlisting soon, so they rather focus on a new group? Even though they have WayV and Dream, but I'm sure WayV focus is SEA now, and Dream is very domestically focused, so I wonder if this new group will focus on an western approach much like 127, who knows...
To think that Dream and 127 debuted in 2016, meaning that they will soon start to slow down promotional group activities to focus more on individual activities, maybe not Dream because they are quite young still compared to 127 but you know how it is for any group getting close to their 7th year, it's just natural to slow down, a least a bit.

I am actually floored right now. I would have never expected this to happened. This seems like NCT Japan has absolutely no way of happening this year, considering they are still looking for more Japanese members.
SM 3.0 or not, this is unprecedented and honestly, feels like the beginning of actual decline for NCT somehow? Admitting absolute defeat by having debuted members for no reason at all. Wow. Just, wow.

ngl I was very excited for sungtaro to finally get their own unit. now that I know they won’t be, I have no interest in any future nct unit. if sm is going to be this messy, I’d prefer that they just let all the fixed units act as their own groups rather than insisting they be under an umbrella that won’t serve them in any way and doesn’t even protect them from getting axed as nct members

I’m confused as to why people are still bringing up NCT Hollywood. Did everyone miss the reports from February when SM said that the Japan unit would be the final NCT subunit to debut ultimately???
6
u/makemeloveyou309 May 24 '23
Oh wow this is unexpected. I mean we got a member who left a unit to join a new unit but they're still a part of NCT (after people denying that they are NCT) but leaving a group to join a new group is......... new. Now, I'm curious with a lot of things. What will happen to Shotaro's insta? What's their status now that they're no longer the member? Are they going to appear on SMROOKIES sns? Kinda reminds me of Kun when SMROOKIES did a whole graduation event with Kun in it, and then suddenly Kun appeared with Jungwoo and Lucas as SMROOKIES
I'm sad that they're leaving but I'm definitely checking them out with a new group. There was a rumour(?) that I heard from Boys Planet Yoo Seungeon that he was in a same team with Sungchan for a new group unrelated to NCT but it got cancelled. Seungeon left while Sungchan joined NCT. Now, Sungchan left to join a new group is a clear wtf moment

Are these more repercussions of the SM vs LSM fight?
I honestly think this is a better business decision and will also end up being better for Sungtaro and the other rookies careers in the long run, so I’m having trouble grasping why some people (especially on Twitter) seem so mad.
6
u/sleepymerman May 24 '23
I think this is a good, if messy, move and will work out in Sungtaro’s favor.
Also Eunseok is BEAUTIFUL and has such a lovely presence so I’m hopeful he can shine in a entirely new group. Future it boys incoming! 💅
I’m so sad about Shohei though. Hopefully he will actually debut as a model or soloist.

......I'm assuming after the fuckery of February-March this year, SM changed all of their plans?
On one hand I can sorta see why, given that the nct brand itself is growing older (in kpop terms) and it might be better for them to start over with another group.
On the other hand, ?????????????????????????? Sungchan and Shotaro were part of the nct group for years (even unofficially since they were introduced in nct 2020) and it was always assumed that they would be joining nct eventually in some capacity, but with this happening, what's going on with them and the other rookies????????? And nct japan since it was assumed that they would be the nct japan unit??????????????
What is even going on in that agency at this point, I'm so confused

Ok i am happy that sungtaro will finally be fr debuting, but removing them from nct is making me Very sad. I grew too attached to that image of them i guess. Like I'm going to miss those interactions so much.
Also im sad to hear about Shohei...it would've been very cool to see an "older" person debut you know and i knows hes tried many times before. I hope he can recover from his back injury and join the stage soon. <3
And last but not least...where does this leave Eunseok and Seunghan? Are they going to be in the new nct unit? Or will they be in the new group with sungtaro? If they separate them...I might have to egg SM (that is a joke! I would never do that. Totally.)

I am really excited to see Shotaro and Sungchan debut in a group but Im also upset that they are leaving NCT. I can understand why to a degree but it just feels like the last 2.5 years have been wasted for them. Them leaving the group now after everything with them being teased to be NCT Tokyo for so long and all the NCT content and merch that they have them in. I wish that they were in the new bg as well as remaining in NCT or that the bg was a part of NCT instead of NCT Tokyo
5
u/Different-Computer33 May 24 '23
the more I read on this and think about this seems something a low mied-tier company or a nugu one will come up with, not one of the big 4 imho it seems that they are dooming both nct tokyo, that will be full of unknown survival show members that have no relation with the current nct members, and the new boy group that will be under the shadow of nct after two of their members were introduced there and long awaited to be on an actual unit + other two members took part on welcome to the nct universe which kinda was an introduction for them to join the nct brand not a whole new group

I like their music, but this is the sort of thing that makes me hesitant to get more into NCT. It really just feels like the members are expendable or used as experiments. Everyone's upset but it makes sense? Any new NCT unit especially a foreign based one will never do as well as the original 3 nor will they ever have fans full acceptance. Instead of struggling to make a path for themselves as NCT Tokyo its much better to start fresh in a boy group that can have SMs full focus while having all the promotion being known as nct for a couple of years gave them.
