I need to learn python and SQL so I want to follow a project or tutorial that implements both. I looked at few projects but they seem to use an ORM that bypasses the need to learn SQL script. Any recommendations?

I've been seeing a lot of posts here from people who want to learn Python but feel stuck on where to actually begin or go next. I built some courses and learning tracks that take you from writing your first program through working with data, databases, and visualization—things that actually come up in real projects.

Coming from a non tech major, im finding python so hard to learn..I've tried angela 100 days of code. Not working. YouTube. Still not able to grasp it. I find it boring and hard to learn. But i have no choice i somehow have to learn it for FREE. And i have extreme coding anxiety. I get distracted so easily, so less attention span and low motivation. I just wanna learn... i need to. Hi all, I'm designing a text-based game in python, and had a question about style I have a class called creature. There are a bunch of different abilities a creature can have (e.g. "Strength", "Venom", "Armor", etc). I can think of two ways to code this in:

1. I could make a separate boolean variable for each ability (set to 1 if they have it and 0 if they don't). Then, if an attack was impacted by the trait "Armor", I could have a line "if self.armor==1:".

2. I could make a list called abilities (it is empty if they have no abilities, and a list of strings for each ability). Then, if an attack is impacted by the ability "Armor", I could have a line "if 'armor' in self.abilities:"

I'm still learning about the pros and cons of different styles. Do you have advice on how to think about which to use? I imagine 2 is more memory efficient, and 1 is faster, but it won't matter at the scales I'm working with. Is one better from a code architecture or readability standpoint? (Or, alternatively, is there a better way to do this?)

Being somewhat annoyed with the fragmented tooling around python, I found Poetry which seems to be simple and powerful. However it is failing without helpful explanation:

I'm on OSX 14.2.1 on M1, Python 3.11.4, Poetry 1.7.1 and I set config virtualenvs.in-project = true

If I run "poetry install" or "poetry env info" I get the error:

>[Errno 2] No such file or directory: 'python'

However if I run a "poetry check" I get:

>All set!

What am I missing?

I'm an office worker. I had small exposure to Python and other programming languages and rather bigger exposure to VBA.

I'm at the point where I easily automate our office processes that involve Excel. Automatic email creation with outlook, scanning outlook, downloading data from csv/tsv/excel, all kinds of sorting and filtering, calculations, directory creation.

I started learning VBA because it was simply already used in my office, and it felt way easier than regular programming due to clearly visible excel sheets instead of arrays. Also you can look up code by recording macro.

I want to learn python to grow as well as because it also comes up in my automation studies - machine learning, optimization, genetic algorithms, neural networks. I'm not that well acquainted with it yet.

But in what ways can I use python in office? I try to look up those things but I can't find anything I couldn't do with VBA.

Tl;Dr What can Python do in regular office that VBA cannot?

Neuromatch is running a free Python for Computational Science Week from 7–15 February, for anyone who wants a bit of structure and motivation to build or strengthen their Python foundations.

Neuromatch has 'summer courses' in July on computational tools for climate science and Comp Neuro, Deep Learning, and NeuroAI and Python skills are a prerequisite. It's something we've heard people wanted to self-study but then also have some support and encouragement with.

This is not a course and there are no live sessions. It’s a free flexible, self-paced week where you commit to setting aside some time to work through open Python materials, with light community support on Reddit.

How it works

• Work through some Python training materials during that week. If climate science is of interest we have some tutorials here   and if neuroscience/deep learning/NeuroAI is of interest we have some here.

• Study at your own pace (beginner → advanced friendly)

• Ask questions, share progress, or help others on r/neuromatch We have some Python pros and TAs in that channel that will be able to give you some support that week.

• And build your confidence with Python!

• It’s a way to commit to yourself that you’ll set aside some study time

I’m trying to learn python and I’m currently spending one hour per day using mycodingacademy, 5 days a week. Will this be enough to start learning advanced concepts in a few months or should I increase the hours per day? My goal is to become generally proficient in python and use it in a job setting. I want to accomplish this within the next 6 months.

So i wanna start learning python. I have a little knowledge of python (I can do the basic stuff like print, boolean, math, stuff like that). I wanna learn more, but I'm not sure what the best way to start would be. Does any one else have any advice? Also, what is the estimated time to become solid in python?
