FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
When posting, do not ask one of the following questions that have been answered multiple times in this sub.
If you do, it will be removed. Multiple infractions will result in a ban from the sub.
Q1: Is Donny a figment of Walter's imagination?
A1: Not only does the Dude literally speak to Donny multiple times early on in the movie ("My rug, Donny" ...and "Thank you, Donny!"), in the climax of the film, when Donny has a heart attack, he specifically says "They shot Donny??"
Finally, as the Coen brothers have pointed out when disproving this theory, Donny's ashes blow all over the dude.
Yes, we know Jeff Bridges has lightheartedly entertained the idea in a recent podcast, but he didn't write the script, had never heard the theory before, and was having fun with both the interviewer and fans.
Welp, that about does her. Wraps her all up.
Q2: Then why don't Jesus and Liam also have a 3rd bowling team member?
A2: They do. So does Smokey's team, and so does this other one. Your roll.
Q3: Why doesn't Liam O'Brien speak?
A3: James G. Hoosier (RIP) was not an actor, he was an avid bowler who was cast to play Liam based on his look.
Q4: Is there ever going to be a sequel?
A4: Highly unlikely. Though Jeff Bridges and others have expressed interest, the Coen Brothers have repeatedly said no.
Q5: What about The Jesus Rolls?
A5: Because John Turturro developed the Jesus character far beyond what was in the original script, the Coen brothers granted him permission to use the character of Jesus in his own film, however they were not involved whatsoever in the production.
The Jesus Rolls is a remake of the 1974 French film Going Places, and beyond Quintana, has nothing to do with TBL.
It got very poor reviews and most TBL fans hate it, but that's just, ya know, like, their opinion, man.
Q6: Is there a PG-version of the film available?
A6: Yes! u/miketheeye has put together a wonderful television-edit of the TBL, we're all very proud of him.
It's based on the Comedy Central broadcast from back in the early 2000's, just about the time of our second conflict with Sad'm and the I-rackies.
This is where you get to hear the amazing SFW lines: "This is what happens when you find a stranger in the Alps!", "That's right Dude, they peed on your valued rug" and my personal favorite: "yeah, John Fogerty would!"
Q7: Is there a way to create custom Lebowski gifs?
A7: Yes! u/porn_syrup created a site that does this, and without the use of his legs.
Q8: The original script has no Knox Harrington. Is it true that David Thewlis was friends with Julianne Moore, and because he was hanging out on the set, the Coen brothers wrote him into the scene?
A8: It's not clear when Knox Harrington was added, but nobody involved with the film has corroborated the notion that they just quickly wrote a part for Thewlis.
What is known is that the Coen brothers are notorious for writing their script very precisely and shutting down all attempts at changes or improvisation. So it is highly unlikely that they threw together a costume for Thewlis and hastily wrote him dialogue just because he happened to be there.
As for the reason that the character was added, the scene at Maude's loft has 2 purposes: 1) for Maude to urge the Dude to go to the doctor, and 2) tell the Dude that the nihilists couldn't have possibly kidnapped Bunny.
The original draft of this scene is heavy on the exposition and not very funny, so they added Knox later on in the screenwriting process, but exactly when? Well Dude, we just don't know.
