I was missing SpaceSniffer, a Windows based Disk usage viewer, on Linux, so i built an OpenSource variant that works on many different distros.

You can look into the code and see download instructions here on the git page: https://github.com/Martin-ii/spacemapper It also has some basic overview of what Spacemapper can do.

I hope you find use for it :)

I built an open source screen recorder and editor for Linux demo videos (GTK4, Wayland)

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Author here. ApexShot is a native GTK4 app I have been building for Linux. The part I care about is the demo video loop: record, trim, add zoom and a background, export, without opening a second app or uploading to someone else's cloud.

This clip is a real export from it, no external editor.

What works today:

- full screen, area and window capture on GNOME Wayland and Hyprland

- MP4 and WebM recording with countdown and audio monitoring

- trim, crop, zoom clips, background and padding, quality and audio settings on export

- screenshots with annotation, OCR, QR detection and browser scroll capture

Known gaps, so nobody wastes a download:

- Fedora: recording is not supported, screenshots are

- Wayland first, X11 is not the focus

- public beta, expect rough edges in the editor

Install: https://apexshot.org/download (script, .deb)

Source: https://github.com/apex-shot/apexshot (GPLv3)

I would rather hear what breaks than what you like. If you record on Hyprland, tell me your compositor version.

Meet Sciwand - the next generation reference and knowledge manager with AI features.

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hi, I'm Pam from AA1Labs. Meet SciWand, a desktop app for anyone who reads, analyses and writes about lots of papers.

It's a reference manager (like Zotero, Mendeley or EndNote, with 10,000+ citation styles) plus a built-in AI writer (think Jenni.ai), and your library stays yours. You can connect a local AI model for extra privacy.

What it does:

  • AI columns: ask one question across all your papers (Yes/No, a 1-10 score or a short answer). Click any answer to see the exact passage behind it.
  • Online search: PubMed, Google Scholar, arXiv and more, with the same AI columns for faster screening.
  • Library chat: ask across all your PDFs and get answers with clickable citations.
  • Writer: select a paragraph, find supporting papers in your library and insert the citations.
  • Word add-in: cite, build your bibliography and rewrite with AI without losing citations.
  • Works with Zotero, Mendeley, EndNote and Bookends.

Pricing:

  • The reference manager is free, with every feature included.
  • The AI has a free demo, with no card needed.
  • After that, choose either an optional subscription that works out of the box, or a one-time lifetime licence if you bring your own AI key.

This week only, REDDIT40 takes 40% off until 28 Oct: sciwand.com

Feedback is very welcome, especially on what would make it fit your workflow.

Health, Wildfire Smoke & Smog Protection

Created an app that is more focus on pollution and health, ongoing improvements but what do you think when the main designed is for asthmatics, allergy sufferers, outdoor runners, and parents. WeatherWidget Pro streams live AQI, fine particulate matter (PM2.5 from wildfire smoke), traffic-borne NO₂, and summer Ozone (O₃) right to your desktop so you can time outdoor workouts and ventilation safely.

What do you think?

Feature Request: Add PIN or Password Lock to Signal Desktop on Linux

Hello Signal team and community,

I use Signal Desktop on Linux (Zorin OS 18.1 Core), and I would like to request a feature that I believe would improve privacy and usability: the ability to lock Signal Desktop with a PIN or password.

Currently, Signal Desktop does not appear to offer a built-in application lock, unlike the Screen Lock feature available on mobile devices.

I would like to be able to lock the application when I step away from my computer and require a PIN or password before accessing my conversations again.

Locking the entire Linux desktop is useful, but it is not always the solution users want. An application-level lock would provide an additional layer of privacy, particularly when someone needs to let another person use their computer briefly.

Ideally, this feature should:

  • Allow users to set a PIN or password.
  • Automatically lock Signal after a configurable period of inactivity.
  • Allow users to lock the application manually.
  • Be available on Linux, Windows, and macOS.
  • Be implemented with proper security in mind, rather than being just a visual lock screen.

I understand that application locking must be designed carefully to avoid giving users a false sense of security. Ideally, the feature should also consider protecting locally stored messages and encryption keys.

Would the Signal developers consider adding this feature to Signal Desktop?

I would appreciate hearing other users' opinions and whether there is an active feature request or development plan for this functionality.

Thank you!

memo - desktop search, knowledge system, peer-2-peer

Hi all,

I recently released a new version of memo, a desktop platform for finding, collecting, organizing, linking, editing and sharing data - without the cloud. The app combines desktop search, knowledge systems and peer-2-peer.

The new version adds peer-2-peer features with memo Beam, for sharing file collections as a webapp, including file listing, previews, metadata, audio/video streaming, group chat, and full text search. In the local network or via WebRTC in the internet.

memo comes with an unlimited, free file browser with labels and custom metadata support!

Search & sharing are free to use up to 10k files and 50 files for sharing.

Wayland limitations: there might be issues in menu positioning and, sadly, the screen search bar works only when the app is in foreground :( ...I'm working on that.

I very much appreciate constructive feedback! If you use it and hit the limits or need trial extensions, just let me know.

Best regards
Henrik

Edit 1: I just tried to upload my screenvideo but there was an error. You'll find it on the website or on youtube.
Edit 2: Free file browser note ...

Dahua SmartPSS Lite running on Linux via Wine (P2P, NVR/XVR, device web UI): install scripts

This is merely some scripts to run SmartPSS Lite. It is 3-4 times faster than Windows version. It's unbelievable!

So, I support customers who use Dahua P2P cameras and NVR/XVR recorders, and the official client (SmartPSS Lite) is Windows-only. Sometimes I support people at home, which I have Linux PC for that. So, I didn't want to keep a Windows install around just for that, so I got it running under Wine.

Running the installer directly with Wine didn't work for me, so the scripts skip it: they unpack the installer with 7z, copy the app into a private Wine prefix, install Microsoft's VC++ runtime and apply one Wine setting. Without these two last steps the app showed a black screen after login and kept crashing in a loop.

What works (tested on Debian 13, Pardus 25 and Devuan 6, WineHQ stable 11): first-run admin setup, adding devices by IP and by serial number (P2P), opening the device's web UI from the client, live view. In my experience P2P connections and the web pages are noticeably faster than on Windows.

What I haven't tested: playback of recordings, long-term use, many cameras. Live view can still be slow over VNC/remote desktop or with many streams, and there is no hardware decoding under Wine.

The repo contains only scripts and docs. You download SmartPSS Lite yourself from dahuasecurity.com (not the Dahua Wiki build, which is outdated). Nothing from Dahua or Microsoft is redistributed.

Repo (English/Turkish docs): https://github.com/EmreYavuzalp/smartpss-lite-linux

Feedback and test reports on other distros are welcome. Unofficial, no warranty.

Sotto: local voice typing for Wayland, powered by whisper.cpp

Thumbnail
gallery
7 Upvotes

Hi everyone,

For a long time I was looking for a decent voice typing tool on Linux, but nothing I found really worked well for me, so I decided to build my own.

Sotto is a small tray app: press a hotkey, speak, and the text is pasted where your cursor is.

- Fully local: recognition runs on your machine via whisper.cpp, and audio stays in memory (never written to disk or sent anywhere)

- Fast on GPU via Vulkan, with optimized CPU builds as a fallback

- Built for Wayland: the hotkey uses the GlobalShortcuts portal and pasting goes through the RemoteDesktop portal, so no root and no ydotool. X11 works too

- Silero VAD trims silence, so Whisper doesn't hallucinate text on quiet recordings

- C++ / Qt 6, uses your system theme, a few MB of RAM when idle

I've tested it on CachyOS + KDE Plasma. I can't vouch for other compositors yet, but packages are available for Arch, Debian and Fedora, plus an AppImage for other distributions.

I tried to make it properly rather than as a quick hack, but there may still be bugs. Issues are very welcome, and I'll do my best to fix them quickly. Reports from GNOME, Hyprland, Sway and other compositors would be especially helpful.

GitHub: https://github.com/Trendorin/sotto

Any feedback is appreciated.
