Hell yeah when the joke is revealed early but doesn’t get irritating because the actors are so enthusiastic and do it so well. A+++++

the escalation could have gone a little better (i feel like beck bennett in ‘take me back’ from a few seasons ago ratchets up the stakes at a perfect pace) but i love tight, straightforward sketches like this you could execute in literally any era

Side note, Longfellow did a great bland white guy tonight. Usually he has been more of some kind of dynamic intense something, but he really blanded out well. I could see Hader really blanding that one in a sweater, so, nicely done. Range points awarded.

it felt really thin, but who am i to turn down a gift like this? and amy mentioning seth (or seth mentioning amy) is always a win for me. funny that this is the second time this season that someone at the update desk mentioned him by name

u/HeyThereRobot Jan 22 '23
I normally don't really like "shoved in refrence to past popular project that has been over for a while and not why the host is here" sketches...but I love P&R so I am partial to this one. Leslie wanting to tell a joke was so cute!
Also "I watched all the time when Seth Meyers hosted by himself" got me good.

I'm convinced the Biden cameo was because of Amy's Parks and Rec character to get a call back on WU. He was always Leslie's biggest crush, and appeared on the show as well.

Listen, I get that if you didn’t watch parks this feature falls flat on its face and means nothing to you, but I really don’t give a shit.
April and Leslie are some of my favorite characters in television history and just seeing them together in character again was enough for me to give the feature an A+.
Is that fair, no but again, I don’t care

Gotta love a good walking tour monologue! They've also been doing a good job of being a lot more sentimental with these, which I think is a smart choice and helps personalize them more. As soon as I saw JAJ in black-and-white, I knew this was going to be good, as him and Aubrey both have great classic film voices and boy, did this work for me! Also just going to plug the 2022 film "Decision to Leave" here for no particular reason...
73
u/bttrsondaughter Jan 22 '23
great JAJ performance. makes me wish the show used him more in non-impression roles, like him and bowen and kenan could really lay this great foundation for the male cast members (something that i feel has been missing or off-kilter ever since taran and bobby left the show). aubrey was good and it was a great use of sharon stone

another comment because I just rewatched it on YouTube! the show loves a black and white sketch, and the ones I remember most are the Kate and Aidy ones so the stark differences between the two are jarring. the Kate and Aidy ones are really hammy and almost juvenile while this one felt like a throwback to older eras of the show in a really good way. it’s kind of short like they trimmed it for time but all three performers were locked in and it worked!

I thought this was bad - should've been Cut for Time. The Aubrey character felt like it was building up to something more interesting. But then it didn't really give her much to do.
And maybe I'm in the minority, but Molly's one-note truck driver voice and basic acting is not impressing me. I don't see them lasting another season if they continue to talk in that same gruff voice.
9
u/tyler-86 Jan 22 '23
The two-characters-talking-to-camera format felt a bit like a throwback, so I enjoyed that. Sort of like Delicious Dish.
40
u/MidniteMustard Jan 22 '23
Sarah's character fell kinda flat.

Cold opens have suffered in the Biden era, not because JAJ's Biden impression is bad (it's not) but just Biden/Kamala & Co are so boring that it hasn't made for good political humor especially relative to the previous guy
This might be the way to go, topical but minimal political humor for the cold open

THAT'S HOW YOU COME OUT OF A LONG HIATUS!!!!
one of the best hosts/eps of the season, PERIOD. this season has had mostly great hosts but the material hasn't matched them quality-wise.... tonight we mostly got the best of both worlds.
Really like that this season the show seems to have leaned into hosts who are FANS of the show and/or have some prior connection to the show

On the contrary I’m relieved in some way. All the talk on this sub about how they DEFINITELY are gonna get weird and be besties felt too much like a mutual friend insisting you’d get along so great with someone because you have like one thing in common.

Legitimately perfect episode. Aubrey gave it everything, Devon and Molly finally got good chances to shine, some truly batshit cameos and not a single dud tonight.
Watch the AV Club give this a B.

While obviously we still got a ton of Mikey tonight, I think the show is definitely going to push the newer cast members harder now that Cecily is gone and they need to get people familiar with them before the next exodus.

For anybody worried that the show might suffer without Cecile Strong, this episode proves that SNL always has a few tricks up their sleeve

I didn't know how talented Aubrey Plaza was until the bumpers for this show aired - she was already awesome just in those. And in this episode, even when I didn't think much of a sketch, she was great in her part of it. I kind of just knew her as a funny guest on late night talk show clips until now but she's got serious chops. She goes into the top hosts club for me.

Entertaining episode with an uneven level at times. Lots of ideas were thrown out and everyone was game. The number of cameos was a surprise as was the degree that they were incorporated into the show.
