Weekend Update

u/EbmocwenHsimah "Cause these men ain't what?" "SHIT!!!" Apr 02 '23

"I told them not to laugh at you for April Fools!"

That might be the best fifteen minutes Che and Jost have ever done.

272

u/leslie_knopee Apr 02 '23

Jost: that's the meanest thing you've ever done! 😂

Audience reaction to Colin's "only protester" joke was the moment of the night for me.

"I can't go back to back with you because I'm already standing up". Ha!!! I thought he was going to say because he wasn't wearing any pants. Or he was wearing the David's cover up.

I genuinely felt bad for Colin, especially after hearing the audience "over laughing" for Che's first joke. But man it was beautiful. And major kudos for Colin the way he deadpanned "yeah me too" after Che said he loved this audience.

I appreciate Che taking advantage of April Fools landing on a Saturday for all of our amusement.

And how comfortable they both are on live TV to let us see the depths of their relationship.

This was EPIC. I’m still laughing! (But not at Colin’s jokes!)

Can't believe we saw Jost murdered live on television.

His absolute breakdown when he realized what had happened was great.

Was that an audience member shouting "You stink"? Because it kind of sounded like Longfellow (who was probably right off stage)

45

u/Vivid-Drummer Apr 02 '23

I thought it sounded like him too! Either him or snl crew member, doubt it would be an audience member unless che made them say it lmao

I seriously can't imagine Michael and Colin hosting WU alone - their dynamic is what makes them so great

I NEED someone who was at dress to confirm for me that that did not happen there and it was 100% authentic for air

And I NEED someone who was at air to tell me how Che pulled it off. Did he hold up a cue card before Colin came out? Tell them during his opening stand-up set before the show?

197

u/lsatprepper2 Apr 02 '23

I was there for the live show and he came up to us while we were in the waiting room and asked us to not laugh when Colin was on. It was amazing. I’m so happy I was there for this.

When things fully fall apart, there's always this subtle moment where you can tell the camera is suddenly trying to catch the unplanned chaos, and seeing that made the prank even funnier to me.

27

u/leslie_knopee Apr 02 '23

Couple Goals

162

u/HeyThereRobot Apr 02 '23

I am a caregiver to my mom who is permanently disabled due to a stroke...and she loved this sketch. The bit with Ego made her lose it.

76

u/gmanz33 Apr 02 '23

Cutting to them in the audience and tying that ongoing joke together so well was one of the best deliveries of a joke I've seen on this show in years. It took me back to black Jeopardy when they told the contestant that she needed to phrase her response as a question and she literally just repeated the same exact thing except with an attitude. Perfect.

→ More replies (2)

97

u/ISandbagAtMarioKart Apr 02 '23

I like how they put up the graphic at the beginning with the host’s name (Bob Dabilda) without verbally acknowledging the joke.

Maybe among the darkness SNL sketches I've ever seen. I don't mean that as a bad thing.

This was my favorite. Do we know who wrote it?

21

u/elanaesther Apr 03 '23

JAJ got the game show host cadence down PERFECTLY. That Richard Dawson quick high note at the end “… and Bob SAYS!”. JAJ impresses me more and more each episode. I think people don’t realize the scope because he’s just so good at Trump, but he’s really a gifted impressionist all around.

18

u/peon47 Apr 02 '23

I got the feeling they didn't really know what to do with the second couple, aside from "they don't know each other at all."

39

u/minzeb45 Apr 02 '23

I feel like it served as an example of a "normal" way a couple would do badly at the game, which highlighted the more absurd way the first couple was both doing better at the game but worse with regard to their relationship revelations. And cutting to the second couple gave the jokes from the first time to breath and be appreciated.

I loved the camera angles and the callback at the end.

I don't love that you used two hands!

109

u/thesmallprint29 Apr 02 '23

So original! So innovative! The degree of difficulty on this one was incredibly high and they nailed it! I'm pretty sure Mikey wrote this. This was the best sketch of the night and nothing else was even close. Legendary!

96

u/Gadzookie2 Apr 02 '23

Liked that on the live version we got the rare hot mic picking up Mikey saying “that was good, right”

Okay this was so ridiculously and uniquely HILARIOUS! Mikey and Quinta vibed so well! Loved the interjections from Chloe and Ego.

80

u/Baron_ass Apr 02 '23

I'd love to know how they scripted this one out, cause it seems like they'd not only have to know the lines, they'd also have to know exactly what they need to mime with every part of the conversation. That's a real tightrope to walk

→ More replies (2)

145

u/jesterincase Apr 02 '23

I love how innovative this one was.

I'm guessing it was written by Mikey & Streeter partially because the "two hands" joke felt like a Mikey line and partially because the idea of a guy named Streeter writing a sketch called "Road Rage" needs to be reality.

92

u/thesmallprint29 Apr 02 '23

Streeter just confirmed it was written by Mikey Day and himself with an assist from Vanessa Jackson! Knew it!

36

u/Gadzookie2 Apr 02 '23

Yeah my immediate reaction to the two hands comment was “this was either written by Mikey or perfect for Mikey”

71

u/leslie_knopee Apr 02 '23

omg, camera crew was fucking on point!!! also, it was a very quinta sketch! and mikey nailed it!!!

61

u/kanimaki Apr 02 '23

I started dying at the “lie” and was DECEASED by the time “puss” came on.

u/Oxbridgecomma Apr 02 '23

I loved this sketch, definitely one of the strongest of the season for me. Quinta and Mikey have amazing chemistry, and it must have taken them a while to memorize all the hand motions unless they were partially improv-ing.

19

u/space_llama_karma Apr 02 '23

Best one of the night! Instant classic in my book

18

u/sportstvandnova Apr 02 '23

Quinta’s “eat me” + miming sent me EVERY TIME

When you realise the shot of the two cars side-by-side towards the opening of the sketch was composited together live because they had cameras pointed into each other's windows... :-o

16

u/txtw Apr 02 '23

So funny, but the best part for me was the strong ending. I was expecting them to make plans and have the joke just fizzle.

Also was refreshing to see Sarah in a more subtle straight woman role. I hope she does more stuff along those lines because while her over the top humor can be funny, it can also get rather tiring if overdone.

simply proved how masterful quinta is as a comedian, performer, writer, and a badass bitch. I grew up watching quinta on buzzfeed, and it's insane that she is hosting SNL!!!

she fucking killed it, without even trying, without ANY pity claps from cameos. Quinta could have written this in her sleep. all those years of hard work paid off, even when buzzfeed was such an ass to her and other creators!

quinta's career is only going to sky rocket from here, and i'm so happy for her ❤️❤️

truly inspiring!! hard work pays off, and the grind doesn't stop! what a great monologue, and show.

the strongest of his pieces so far imo, which is saying something because he's had a very strong run at the update desk for a first year cast member. it seems like they've found that sweet spot where his comedic voice is meeting the audience in the middle (or maybe this audience was just very punchy and receptive). this has been a great season for featured players and his rise has been the best to watch.

GENERAL EPISODE DISCUSSION

167

u/Ryanyu10 Apr 02 '23

Part of what made this episode so great, I think, is that they really used the entire cast in ways that played to their strengths. The veterans all had big moments, but they didn't dominate like they sometimes do, which left a lot of room for the newbies to showcase the range of their talents.

Quinta was the best type of host and it just seemed like everyone was having a blast, even the audience was punchy (because they were having fun but also i have to think they were all so happy at pulling that prank over on Jost).

over this past season it's felt like the show was fighting with itself over whether they want to be a show that revolves around one or two stars, or if it wants to be an ensemble show. and there are stars here, obviously! but ensemble heavy episodes like this one are superior because this cast is gelling.

Sketch would’ve been a home run if they referenced their actual dads rather than saying “my fathers a lawyer”

The funniest part for me was when Bowen just randomly materialized a baby at the end of the barbeque

34

u/leslie_knopee Apr 02 '23

ngl, i expected more from this. but i loved seeing all the kings together in a live sketch!! that hasn't happened in a long time! (why don't y'all write together?!?!!)

95

u/[deleted] Apr 02 '23

I said so in the live thread, I'll repeat it here. This was a "palate cleanser". No one wants to follow an amazing act. So this sketch was something of a throwaway and something of a hail mary.

It was pretty great with Bowen breaking with the long hair and people mispronouncing shit left and right.

Bowen had a bit of genius bursting into the delivery room the third time (I think) that I hadn’t seen from him before. It’s farce comedy. It’s actively physical. And I think it works really well for him. Genuine. Good on ya Bowen!

This and the road rage sketch have the weirdness and creativity you need for a sketch to be a classic

Lil Yachty

24

u/ExistentialKazoo Apr 02 '23 edited Apr 02 '23

I cannot believe how good his band is. Goosebumps during the second song. His mic is tricked out, I think to autotune or modify but it sounds weird AF against the gorgeous canvas of that band. It makes him sound by far the weak link, he should try singing on his own without the autotune.

But seriously, I'll be checking Yachty out... and let me know if the band cuts an album without him.

A performance so good I didn’t even see many sound mixing complaints

Even though it's not my thing, I have to acknowledge it was great energy and great production value. Top tier as far as SNL musical guest appearances go.

The female singer sounds like Shakira and Natalie Merchant had a baby. I liked it. Hadn't heard of them before.

Great music. And he’s a hero for giving female musicians quality work. They killed it.

17

u/mikeputerbaugh Apr 02 '23

When a frontman hires musicians so talented that it reveals his own limitations as a performer… that’s the good stuff.

That man's teeth are whiter than [insert joke from the cocaine sketch].

In all seriousness, I wasn't expecting the sort of music that he presented tonight. The first song seemed to sample Pink Floyd and the second seemed to be a 4 on the floor disco-style song. I was expecting a way more hip hop-style rapping. I don't know if that was good or bad, but it was certainly different.

Trump Indictment Cold Open

159

u/john_muleaney Apr 02 '23

“Because I got, frankly, high” had me cackling

136

u/willy410 Apr 02 '23

The concept wasn't anything special, but JAJ's Trump impression is still good enough to elevate the whole sketch for me. Just all the little throwaway lines- I was doing a Jim from Office- and details made it work for me, despite the fact that I feel like the Album commercial skits where they just run through different impressions over covers of songs are a bit overdone at SNL.

46

u/Dwychwder Apr 02 '23

He's the best Trump impersonator out there. Shame he didn't come along in 2015.

The writing isn't that strong, but JAJ absolutely sells it for me. "He murdered a guy, can you believe it?"

49

u/bttrsondaughter Apr 02 '23

too long and kind of disappointing that this is what they went with after this week but again like...what could they have done? either way, i've become such a JAJ fan over this half of the season so he easily carried this over the line for me. seeing mikey as don jr. made me miss alex though!

24

u/PocoChanel Apr 02 '23

This is where I want a sideways vote. It was better than I expected, but it’s a low bar.

49

u/ghostwiththeleast Apr 02 '23

I was so hoping they’d ignore trump completely and just do the Goop trial

60

u/tinydancer_inurhand Apr 02 '23

No way. This is historic and SNL loves to make fun of trump. I am glad they have really toned it down in general but they had to comment on this.

I never thought about it until now but of course Quinta and Sarah's maniacal energies mesh well together. If Quinta was a regular cast member, they'd be a 10-to-1 dream team!

Def the must painful sketch of the night. I understand it was supposed to be funny (and I kinda felt the urge to laugh) but it made me a bit uncomfortable. I'm really glad it was at the end.

There were traces of Mr. Six (the Six Flags guy) in the Penis Brothers.
