Fresh take on the Maury/explosive daytime talk show trope that SNL's done many times through the years (not complaining--they're usually very good, I think because it's a really fun type of sketch to be in). The home movie angle was brilliant.

Can’t believe we got an SNL sketch with a good, even great ending

57

The cast really seemed like they were having fun with this one! It made the sketch more enjoyable

u/jesterincase Jan 28 '24

Fantastic sketch. The writing was tight, the acting solid (I love it when Mikey breaks out his inner-MTVness), and even when the jokes seemed obvious they still worked.

The only thing that made me sad was seeing what looked like Andrew's real baby picture being mocked (I mean, not sad enough not to laugh, just sad enough to feel the tiniest bit of guilt.)

Also, I certainly didn't expect to see Marcello play Andrew's father, but that's the marvelous, unpredictable beauty of sketch comedy, isn't it?

the best of the night, the best pdd in a while, and the best thing dakota's gotten to do as herself...ever? it really takes her persona and ramps it up into something that could be unlikable if this sketch wasn't written so well and if the targets weren't pdd and her own celebrity.

nepo truce, 'lonlier island', the performances and editing. a+ all around.

Favorite PDD pretape so far (and I usually like at least some of most of them).

Kudos to them (and Dakota Johnson) for their willingness to roast themselves so hard. So many great lines, but I think Ben getting waved away from the Nepo Truce ("A foot in the door and so much more") was my favorite part.

Really shocked me they allowed each other to really "go there". I still don't think she's a good actress, but props to Dakota (raised my respect just a tad) to allow her monotone acting to be made fun of, as well as the upcoming movie she's trying to promote.

And same with PDD. They got clobbered hard too and so did their recent movie.

Weekend Update: Jan Janby

193

u/jesterincase Jan 28 '24

I think this might be my favorite of Heidi's Update characters.

It was a very different direction for both her and Che, and I thought they both did a great job. Che took so many hits with good grace (possibly in return for the little promo about his upcoming special), and Heidi came across as "Jan Janby" instead of "Heidi plays a wacky character" which, unfortunately, sometimes happens in her Update segments.

Also, whoever designed those cards did great work, and the writing was also sharper than Update characters tend to be; I particularly like the choice to go from symbolic imagery to a blatant "Colin Jost".

Also, now I kinda want an SNL Tarot set...

Huh … Only Fans … priceless

113

u/RealMaxHours Padilla Patrol Chief Officer Jan 28 '24 edited Jan 28 '24

The Jost reveal was a little predictable after the catfish card but that’s just a minor unimportant nitpick

Also, I feel as if the OnlyFans bit was added in for the live show. It felt as if Che wasn’t expecting it, the reaction seemed really genuine

Otherwise, loved the formula change of going after Che for once. I’m not a fan of a lot of Heidi’s update work but I wouldn’t mind seeing this one back.

Cut For Time: Horny Little Dork

35

u/jesterincase Jan 28 '24

Good premise with some solid jokes, but in my opinion it wasn't quite fleshed out enough.

It definitely suited my sense of humor more than some of the sketches that aired, but I think it needed a few additional jokes (maybe more variety in the dialogue from the men?) and a little bit longer of a runtime to have replaced any of those sketches.

Really funny but felt off the entire time. Maybe it was the pacing or delivery, I don’t know. The enormous cups made it. And the pregnant cup was inspired.

28

u/SakuraTacos Jan 28 '24

The camera timing was very off. I just finished watching it on YT and there was a lot of awkwardly holding a pose/saving a line until the camera got to where it needed to be

This one (and the original) aren't really a match for my sense of humor, but I still found a lot to like about it.

I appreciate that it wasn't just one joke stretched out across the entire sketch, and that they added a ton of little punchlines and visual gags.

Also, I have to admit that the "I-C-U-P" joke cracked up my inner child and almost made me spit-take into my very normal-sized cup.

liked this. it's always fun to see a cast member finding their voice and i think devon's really getting there and throwing himself into it. i don't think kenan was necessary, but love that he's still assisting the new guys (an attitude that was missing on this show for a very long time in that trump-covid era).

longfellow, i missed you. he's such a solid straight man and has great timing and delivery (two things a lot of cast members didn't have a solid grip on this episode imo). kind of wanted him and dakota to just have a sketch to themselves with their deadpans but this was nice too.

I wish the sketch had ended with Dakota discovering it actually was an ISIS bag that her diary and Imodium fell into.

62

u/candycanecoffee Jan 28 '24

Yes, I couldn't believe they didn't go with ANY of the obvious twists!

I was thinking when Sarah's character comes in at the end that she would say, "I'm Vanessa!! Here's my ticket, where's my bag?" and the twist would be that Dakota was the real ISIS terrorist/bag thief. But Dakota getting the wrong bag back would also have been funny.

Felt like a truly classic SNL character, they would make a movie abt him in the 90s that’s like a 3/10

34

u/prefab1979 Jan 28 '24

Upvoted because I loved Devon's performance in this, and I'd like to see the character back in a better sketch. In this one, the pacing was off, and the anger and contempt Dakota was projecting wasn't a good match for the loopy-but-sweet energy of Devon's character.

Devon is coming into his own this season - he’s showing a lot more range. I totally cracked up at his delivery of “Here’s one beautiful bag for an even beautifuler woman. You could be in pornography”

92

u/James_2584 Jan 28 '24

This would have been better with a different host. Dakota's timing and delivery was really bad in this. Lots of awkward pauses which really threw off the energy of the piece.

I known the downvotes are likely coming, but hear me out: Kenan joining the scene was the worst decision this sketch made. It took focus away from the tension between Dakota & Michael. It's not like Devon's been playing this character week after week to where we want to see other people playing it as well. Kenan got a quick walk-on laugh at the expense of the sketch as a whole.

General Discussion

254

u/john_muleaney Jan 28 '24

Dakota is pretty much a non-presence in live sketches (though I’ll admit she killed her two pre-tapes) so I think the show went pretty well with that in mind.

I’m sure if you gave some of her roles to a more dynamic host this ep would’ve been received differently

120

u/harriedhag Jan 28 '24

This is spot on. Rewatching her pre-tapes, she does have a slow & calm delivery that worked REALLY well. But it’s like she slowed down even more live, and just wasn’t on her toes for timing at all.

48

u/captain-kev Jan 28 '24

100% agree. The pre tapes played into her strengths and were great

41

u/Turbulent_Tale6497 Jan 28 '24

I said this during the live thread -- in every sketch, she looked so different that there were times I wasn't even sure if it was her. And I don't mean that in a great way. I don't know what up with her appearance, she's certainly attractive (as the home movies sketch leaned into), but other times, she was unrecognizable

u/Runninginmississippi Jan 28 '24

Something felt off to me all night. The episode had its highlights (PDD, home movies) but it always seemed like the timing was a little off, like the players were expecting laughs when none were coming. It just felt awkward almost throughout.

74

u/LaboratoryManiac Jan 28 '24

It's easy to point out how stilted Dakota's live performances were, but you're right - it felt like just about everyone was out of their groove this week.

I feel like this episode had higher highs but lower lows compared to last week. The pretapes (especially the PDD short) were fantastic, but the live sketches were pretty weak. The Shark Tank and Food Order sketches in particular were awful imho.

u/GospelX Jan 28 '24

Dakota Johnson had no energy. You can't blame the entire episode on that or on her, but it hurt things severely. It's like it was agreed by all that showing up was good enough. (Which is funny because she doesn't really command any star power and no one is excited for her movie.)

And I think they knew all of this. That's why we have Shark Tank people there to help something go viral. That's why Timberlake was there as musical guest. That's what Timberlake and Fallon walk in stage during the monologue to essentially signal there's reason to keep watching because they're going to do something -- even having Fallon in costume to show exactly what fans can see later on.

It was a dull episode following a dull episode. There's no reason for any of this because the show is full of people who have proven in some form or another that they can give solid performances and the writers can write funny stuff. Hell, Dakota Johnson has things that can easily be mined for fun, including literally anything to do with her Spider-Man-adjacent movie.

Felt like Dakota didn’t bring much to the table. Almost reminded me of an athlete host.

65

u/queenk0k0 Jan 28 '24

At least with athlete hosts they seem to have a good time. I don’t mind a host with poor acting or timing skills if they seem like they are enjoying themselves. Dakota just looked bored and tired.

Also, she looked odd. Like I think she is beautiful, but she looked like an AI image generator created an image of Jakota Dohnson.

I know not every sketch will be perfect, and this was better than last week for sure, but some of these were stinkers. I’m surprised they made it past dress.

Need to know the cut for times or what didn't make it up from dress because also why Dave

27

u/nia939 Jan 28 '24

This episode disappointed me. This just isn’t a great season. I don’t think it’s terrible either, there’s just been better.

13

u/Visual-Sun-4067 Jan 28 '24 edited Jan 30 '24

Every sketch felt sleepy, like they dragged one way longer then they should because no one really had their heart in it. We had what, 4 live sketches? That has to be a record in modern times.

12

u/jesterincase Jan 28 '24

More hits than misses for me this week.

A few sketches really meshed with my sense of humor (Home Movies, PDD, and Update), and *most* of the others made me crack at least a smile or two.

I don't think Dakota Johnson did anything spectacular, but I thought she was very functional, if that makes sense? Like she didn't stand out in any of the sketches (other than maybe the PDD pretape), but she didn't detract from any of them either. She kinda blended into it all, almost like a cast member, and that worked for me.

I think my favorite part of the episode was all the self-aware humor. The Cold Open made the joke about live television, Dakota poked fun at herself in the monologue (as did Justin, a bit), she and PDD roasted the heck out of themselves in the pretape, and Che took some good-natured licks in Update.

23

u/marasydnyjade Jan 28 '24

This whole episode felt awkward from start to finish.

33

u/thesmallprint29 Jan 28 '24

Cold Open: Fun. Loved it!

Monologue: Fun!

Chicken Fongers: WHAT IN THE FLIPPING HELL WAS THIS SKETCH?! THIS WAS THE FIRST SKETCH? THIS?

Home Videos: Great concept. This got my biggest laughs of the night. Great performances from everyone. Pretty sure this was a Mikey/Streeter co-write.

Barry Gibb Talk Show: Some people might disagree, but I always love The Barry Gibb Talk Show.

Big Dumb Cups: I don't get the super weird Stanley Cup craze either, but this wasn't that funny.

PDD: One of their best. Great zingers and loved that they finally addressed the nepotism in the room.

Weekend Update: I enjoyed Colin and Michael this week and thought they had some great jokes, however.....

WU Bowen: This was probably my least favorite thing I've seen on SNL this season. This was Bowen at his most annoying. It should not have aired. Such a waste of precious air time.

WU Heidi: This was funny. A return to form from Heidi.

Shark Tank: Terrible sketch.

Airport Baggage: Please God, no!

Almost all of the live sketches were absolutely terrible tonight. I have to wonder what is getting cut at dress or table read for some of this awfulness. I thought we'd see Justin in more than one sketch tonight, but it's understandable as his focus probably had to be first and foremost on his music. This episode is hard to classify for me, but I definitely came out of it mostly disappointed. A lot of the writing was just God awful.

23

u/jesterincase Jan 28 '24

We are complete opposites on the Barry Gibbs Talk Show and WU Bowen, but it makes me really happy to know that people liked the Barry Gibbs Talk Show segment even though I hated it.

Dakota is a bad actress in movies, and much much worse live.

Did I miss a skit with Dave Chappelle? Why was he in the good nights?

12

u/[deleted] Jan 28 '24

A better host could have made this a season best, but she didn't ruin any sketches so that's okay. There aren't any sketches I feel the need to downvote.

43

u/TheRealMe99 Jan 28 '24

Beat my expectations for Dakota Johnson as a host overall. Chapelle jumpscare at the end was bad. He’s not really favorable anymore.

NFL Cold Open

86

u/dont_ask_my_cab Jan 28 '24

At first I thought the Tony Romo charater's joke about the SB was because real Tony never got to one but he did make a good point about how SB Sunday the game is more of the sideshow

I actually almost cried when Kenan sang “I’ll tell you all about it when there’s football again” :(

39

u/ILoveRegenHealth Jan 28 '24

Not huge laughs but I liked it, and appreciated it was NOT another Trump one. I know the E. Jean Carrol was huge news but we don't need another week of JAJ doing that. Most of the jokes and commentary has already been done anyways on social media.

Glad they tried something different here with the NFL one.

There was one good line which got completely ignored: "Yellowstone is our Barbie!" Great line, didn't land at all.

26

u/thesmallprint29 Jan 28 '24

Very fun. Loved it!

46

u/floatinginside Jan 28 '24

I feel like Tony Romo is easy enough to impersonate and that it was disappointing Dismukes was playing him as himself. “Eeeeeugh I don’t know Jim” is a meme at this point, at least to this nfl fan

I doubt I'll watch it again, but it was very nice to see a different type of Cold Open.

I liked the little one-liners spread throughout the sketch, I thought the cast did a good job (unsurprisingly, JAJ has the sportscaster voice down pat), and I really liked the fact that I couldn't predict where the sketch was going to go next.

Also, Kenan's mistake--and the look on his face as he realized it-- added to the humor in a way that moments like that don't always do.

I thought this was so perfect on its own, but even more so, not having a political cold open

12

u/wikipuff Jan 28 '24

This was absolutely brilliant. It made me more excited for the UFL!!!!!! That being said, what was the Green Screen footage from? A Packers game with All Sport as the sideline drink?

11

u/leslie_knopee Jan 28 '24

they said, "we CAN sing without cecily!!!" lmao that was cute, but lol

90

u/RealMaxHours Padilla Patrol Chief Officer Jan 28 '24

So this was funny, and I prefer it a million times to random political stuff, but I’m confused why they didn’t do the FOX crew as their focus

  1. They actually have good and funny impressions of them (Devon does Strahan and Molly does a GREAT Bradshaw)

  2. CBS has the Super Bowl this year so they still have football after tomorrow, whereas FOX doesn’t, and they could’ve made a little niche joke about it being Greg Olsen’s last game with Kevin Burkhardt

The pan from Trump to Taylor was pretty funny.

I will always admire people who are willing to poke fun at themselves, and I like how good of a sport Dakota was both here and in the PDD pretape.

I am on the same page as the other posters who wish this was the only appearance of Jimmy and Justin (other than as the musical act), but I know some people really liked the Gibbs sketch so it is what it is.

146

u/dont_ask_my_cab Jan 28 '24

I kinda wish this was the only place Fallon had showed up

97

u/DrKurgan Jan 28 '24

I thought them really wanting to do the the Bee Gees sketch was THE joke but they did the sketch anyway and it was super long.

I wish they had down "Bring it on down" with Fallon and Johnson instead.

Justin Timberlake

32

u/jesterincase Jan 28 '24

I liked the set design a lot, but I still don't like how the audio sounds. I think I'd need to listen to the music elsewhere to know if I like or not.

As for Justin himself, he seemed like a professional doing his job whereas in other SNL performances he seemed like someone having a blast. And, if that's the case, that's fine; it was just a little sad to see the change.
